Banding the World Together; The Global Growth of Control Banding and Qualitative Occupational Risk Management

  • Control Banding (CB) strategies to prevent work-related illness and injury for 2.5 billion workers without access to health and safety professionals has grown exponentially this last decade. CB originates from the pharmaceutical industry to control active pharmaceutical ingredients without a complete toxicological basis and therefore no occupational exposure limits. CB applications have broadened into chemicals in general - including new emerging risks like nanomaterials and recently into ergonomics and injury prevention. CB is an action-oriented qualitative risk assessment strategy offering solutions and control measures to users through "toolkits". Chemical CB toolkits are user-friendly approaches used to achieve workplace controls in the absence of firm toxicological and quantitative exposure information. The model (technical) validation of these toolkits is well described, however firm operational analyses (implementation aspects) are lacking. Consequentially, it is often not known if toolkit use leads to successful interventions at individual workplaces. This might lead to virtual safe workplaces without knowing if workers are truly protected. Upcoming international strategies from the World Health Organization Collaborating Centers request assistance in developing and evaluating action-oriented procedures for workplace risk assessment and control. It is expected that to fulfill this strategy's goals, CB approaches will continue its important growth in protecting workers.

  • Environmental conservation is becoming the major conversation topic in the 21st century, the era of environment. In the Law for the Preservation of Water Quality, article 53 states "A business unit which is doing business causing pollution caused by non-point pollutant or builds waste water discharge facilities, should report the installation of the non-point pollutant and install the required pollution control facilities". Environmental pollution caused by oil leaks during operation or maintenance has been found in the railway sector. Especially, rolling stock depot is most likely to be affected by environmental pollution. Therefore, in this paper We have investigated non-point pollutant in the rolling stock depot area and have studied adequate disposal method to minimize the effect of the non-point pollutant, hoping to supply the preliminary data for building an environment-friendly rolling stock depot.

  • Chemical pesticides have been re used for a long time to protect crops from diseases, insects, and weeds ; ample and secure supply of foods in present days would not be possible without them. However, concerns on the risk of using chemical pesticides rising steadily in recent years forced discard many of them and seek an alternate, environment-friendly control strategies. Microbial pesticide is regarded as one of the most promising methods because if properly developed, it will be effective, cheap, and environment-safe. Currently, about 180 microbial pesticides are under development throughout the world and at least 20 of them including B.t. and antibiotics are registered in Korea. This paper discusses some of the successful examples, intriguing problems, and future prospects of microbial pesticides.

  • This paper proposes a prototype of a safe and reliable wheelchair robot with Human Robot Interaction (HRI). Since the wheelchair users are usually the handicapped, the wheelchair robot must guarantee the safety and reliability for the motion while considering users intention, A single color CCD camera is mounted for input user´s command based on human-friendly gestures, and a ultra sonic sensor array is used for sensing external motion environment. We use face and hand directional gestures as the user´s command. By combining the user´s command with the sensed environment configuration, the planner of the wheelchair robot selects an optimal motion.   • A Process Quality Information System (PQIS) for the CIM environment is presented. The system includes three subsystems which are qualify control, statistical analysis, and information management. As part of CIM, the PQIS was designed by using the ICAM Definition(IDEF) methodology. The Oracle-CDE was utilized as a graphic development tool which made the system more user friendly. PQIS operates on IBM or compatible PCs under MS-Windows and Oracle DBMS. The methodology developed in this research provides a foundation for the application of CIM subsystems.

  • The restoration project of Cheonggyecheon was conducted to creates the refreshing water-friendly environment in the downtown Seoul. It already have passed almost 2 years after restoration. This project changed environment of Cheonggyecheon dramatically, so historic hydrological data became useless. There are not so many hydrological data to manage and control this newly restored urban stream. The main purpose of this study is collecting and analysing the hydrological data of Cheonggyecheon. At first, we analysed the mechanism of Cheonggyecheon discharge using the sewage design maps and some GIS data. We also monitored the water levels and discharges of 5 main points of Cheonggyecheon. Rating curves of these 5 points were derived. There were 249 blocks of water gates which were located at both sides of bank. We also monitored the behaviors of these water gates. Through the these monitorings, some equations were derived to give useful information to the manager of Cheonggyecheon.

  • Vacuum carburizing process is well known process for its environment-friendly, low-cost, high-quality characteristics, compared with gas carburizing. In this study, a research was carried out to develop a process of vacuum carburizing for essential components of automotive transmission that is difficult to control its distortion. As a result, vacuum carburizing process is superior to gas carburizing in terms of cost, environment and quality.

  • Advances in interactive multimedia and Internet technologies present an array of options that allow the development of very effective training programs. Interactive training is the delivery and management of training using Internet. The trainee actively participates in the training/learning sessions by means of a user-friendly interface that empowers the participant with a sense of control over what they are teaming and the pace at which they are teaming. In this paper, we show process on the development of 3 dimensional e-learing system for Ubiqitous Environment using 3 dimensional supersonic sensor.

  • Using the artificial sun, namely the BIOSUN, we can control the sun light according to the latitude and longitude and for the seasonal changes and apply that to subway stations. By doing this, we can expect three effects, a. allowing the plants to grow inside the stations which will in turn contribute to improving air purity, controlling humidity, and reducing dust for pleasant environment, b. pleasant environment will foster positive emotional responses of the passengers and that would increase the satisfaction, and c. fostering good service for the citizenry and establishing an environmental friendly image of the Seoul Metro Subway System. The purpose of this thesis paper is to contemplate on the uses of the artificial sun powered by the microprocessor of a Light Emitting Diode (LED) in controlling the light and how the light can be utilized in facilitating photosynthesis that would allow plants to grow inside subway stations.
