  • Wall/floor intersection is important parts of a building envelope system. These intersections can be sources of thermal bridging effects and/or moisture condensation problems. This paper provides a detailed analysis of the thermal performance of wall/floor intersection. In particular, two-dimensional steady-state and transient solutions of the heat conduction within the wall/floor joint are presented. Various insulation configurations are considered to determine the magnitude of heat transfer increase due to wall/floor joint construction.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze heating and cooling load variation due to envelope retrofits in an old school building. In a previous study, envelope retrofit of an old school building resulted in annual energy consumption reduction. However, cooling energy consumption increased with the envelope retrofit. This is because of high internal heat generation rates in school buildings and internal heat cannot escape through windows or walls when the envelope's thermal performance improves. To clarify this assumption, thermal performance changes due to envelope retrofits were analyzed by simulation. Results revealed indoor temperature and inner window surface temperature increased with high insulation level of windows. Indoor heat loss through windows by conduction, convection and radiation decreased and resulted in an increase of cooling load in an old school building. From results of this study, energy saving impact of envelope retrofits in an old school building may not be significant because of high internal heat gain level in school buildings. In case of replacing windows in school buildings, local climate and internal heat gain level should be considered.

  • One of the most weak parts for energy loss through the whole building components are building envelopes. Lots of technbologies to increase the thermal performance of building envelopes have been introduced in recent years. Transparent insulation is a new technology for building insulation and has function both solar transmittance and thermal insulation. This study has been carried out to develope the transparent insulation panels and TI-wall system and to analyze the thermal performance of TI-wall system by experiments using test-cell and dynamic energy simulation program ESP-r 9.0. This system is regarded as a efficient building envelope system suitable for to reduce the heating and cooling load of the buildings in our country.

  • Recently, It has increased the importance of building energy saving. Pipe insulation as well as building envelope insulation is to improve energy efficiency and reduce the energy loss. However, there continues to use the old standard for pipe insulation that is one of the most important elements in energy savings in buildings. The purpose of this study is to propose suitable pipe insulation thickness for reducing building energy use. The study also reviews pipe insulation thickness standard in accordance to Korea standard, ASHRAE 90.1 and BS5422 and analyzed through thermal simulation. As a result, it is necessary to apply the performance design method of the pipe insulation thickness to reduce the energy loss of the piping.

  • The purpose of this study is to accomplished an in-site evaluation method for existing building insulation status using Infra-red camera and to consider improvement performance to prevent condensation and draw the optimum insulation design method for building using simulation tool. The research contents of this study are to evaluate validity and suitability of building insulation defect survey using Infra-red camera for apartment housing with temperature and heat flow pattern analyze method. Based on this research, the three corners, weak part in condensation, were selected in apartment building and conducted simulation by three-dimensional steady state. From the results, it is required to strengthen insulation design, and it is founded that existing insulation system typically applied to most Korean apartment housings have serious insulation defect that insulation is disconnected by structural components at the joints of wall-slab and wall-wall in envelope. Thus, it is considerate to need a concrete technology improvement.

  • The application of the high-performance insulation materials for buildings seems to be an essential measure for reducing energy use in buildings. Phenolic foam is a readily available insulation material with thermal conductivity of about 0.018 to 0.020 W/(mK). It has the advantage of higher thermal resistance and better fire resistance compared to other conventional building insulation materials. Insulation material used for building envelope is regarded as one of the decisive factors for building's energy load. Furthermore, the degradation of its thermal performance over time increasingly affects the building's energy use demand. Generally, the life span of conventionally built buildings is expected to be more than 50 years, so the long-term performance of insulation materials is critical. This paper aims to evaluate the long-term performance of phenolic form boards through an accelerated aging test. The tests were conducted according to BS EN 13166 and KS M ISO 11561. Based on the results of the accelerated aging test, the thermal performance variation of the material was analyzed, and then its aged value after 25 years was computed. Also, the characteristics of the phenolic foam board's long-term performance were also examined based on the standard testing methods adopted.

  • The concept of the combined seismic and energy retrofitting of existing reinforced concrete (RC) buildings was examined in this paper through a number of case studies conducted on model buildings (simulating buildings of the '60s-'80s in southern Europe) constructed according to outdated design standards. Specifically, seismic and thermal analyses have been conducted prior to and after the application of selected retrofitting schemes, in order to quantify the positive effect that retrofitting could provide to RC buildings both in terms of their structural and energy performance. Advanced materials, namely the textile reinforced mortars (TRM), were used for providing seismic retrofitting by means of jacketing of masonry infills in RC frames. Moreover, following the application of the TRM jackets, thermal insulation materials were simultaneously provided to the RC building envelope, exploiting the fresh mortar used to bind the TRM jackets. In addition to the externally applied insulation material, all the fenestration elements (windows and doors) were replaced with new high energy efficiency ones. Afterwards, an economic measure, namely the expected annual loss (EAL) was used to evaluate the efficiency of each retrofitting method, but also to assess whether the combined seismic and energy retrofitting is economically feasible. From the results of this preliminary study, it was concluded that the selected seismic retrofitting technique can indeed enhance significantly the structural behaviour of an existing RC building and lower its EAL related to earthquake risks. Finally, it was found that the combined seismic and energy upgrading is economically more efficient than a sole energy or seismic retrofitting scenario for seismic areas of south Europe.

  • The IIS(Internal Insulation System) is applied in most Korean apartment buildings which are the most common type of residential buildings. Consequently, there are many cases in which the layer of insulation is disconnected by the structural components at the wall-slab and wall-wall joints in the envelope. These joints become thermal bridges where the risk of heat loss increases. It is expected that the EIFS(External Insulation and Finish System) is the solution to this problem. In this study, annual heating and cooling loads of apartment buildings with IIS and EIFS were compared using Design Builder program in order to evaluate the thermal storage effect of EIFS where the concrete thermal mass is located inside of the insulation material. As results, the apartment building with EIFS could reduce annual heating and cooling loads by 2.4% and 4.1%, respectively.

  • The best plan is that the insulation performance should be improved because the insulation and airtight of building envelopes have an effect on the energy consumption basically. New insulation materials, which have the high performance and are above insulation standard, have been developed steadily. Because there are not studies on the building energy rating system and economic evaluation considering new insulation materials, these matters should be studied. In result alternatives, which applied 6 high performance material each, influence, reduce the annual heating energy and raise the building energy rating. Applying the vacuum insulation material(Case1,2) and vacuum or triple glazing can retrieves the investment with $120 and $$140{\sim}150$ per barrel each.
