This paper presents a comparative study on the effectiveness of teaching an engineering course using English with Specific Purpose(ESP). A study was performed using student groups; one class using ESP, and one class conducted in English with an English text. The course conducted using ESP showed the greatest improvement in English writing and conversation, and the students reported a greatly increased confidence in their ability to function professionally using English. A self-assessment of each student was conducted before and after the courses. Prior to the course less than 10% in each group felt that they are able to: a) understand a textbook, b) write an email, c) generate a project report, or d) follow a lecture given in English. The survey at the end of the course showed that the ESP teaching style resulted in significant improvements in students ability and confidence with writing and speaking in English, whereas reading skills were similar for both groups. This is due to the ESP method, in which students are required to give presentations and keep journals in English. After a brief review of the ESP principles and a discussion of how they were implemented, the background data of the participants(students) are described. Finally, the end-of-semester survey highlights the efficacy of the ESP approach.
This study is a report of an intensive ESP(English for Specific Purposes) program conducted for the College of Economic students in Korean University. This is planned for the students to enhance their English achievement in comprehending the subject contents which they would learn in the near future. In order to determine whether the course helped the students enhance their English achievement or not, a pre and post test were taken, one at the beginning of the semester and the other at the end of semester. The result of the test shows that this program benefits relevant students, especially lower level students. In accordance with a general accepted view, the English for Specific Purposes(ESP) program is generally targeted for students who expect to learn the basic knowledge of English through mediated courses. Since students already have specific purpose of studying for their major courses, their motivation and interest in the course are higher than the students who don't have any specific purpose. Therefore, this study shows that the students who took English for Specific Purposes(ESP) had higher motivation and interest to study English related to their major courses as the test results were higher than before they had taken the English for Specific Purposes (ESP) program.
Objectives: This study analyzes the demands of dental hygiene college students for English courses and proposes ways to improve English courses for college students majoring in dental hygiene that would take advantage of English for specific purposes (ESP) in the future. Methods: Using a structured questionnaire, four universities by region with departments of dental hygiene were selected at random, and out of a total of 260 college students majoring in dental hygiene, data of 258 students, excluding data with missing values, were considered for investigating the needs of English curriculum development using the SPSS program. Results: Total 82.1% of the students expected English programs, and they said that English was important, The proposal for English curriculum development indicated that although the number of English programs was sufficient, diversification of English programs or changes in methods of managing classes were required. As for the need for English programs (66.4%), they required more ESP, such as practical English for dental or dental terminology, which can be used clinically and more than English for general purposes (EGP). Conclusions: Students in dental hygiene showed a higher demand for more professional ESP that can use clinically as dental hygienists in the future. It is necessary to consider the reorganization of the curriculum or changes in the method of managing English classes by reflecting one demands of dental hygiene students.
The present study aims to investigate perceptions of university students who are majoring in sports related fields about the introduction of Sports English education. For this purpose, a total of 133 students were surveyed according to a questionnaire asking about their English skills, opinions and attitudes with regard to English study and Sports English class. The main results obtained from this study are as follows: most students' interest in English is relatively low. Hence, students need to be encouraged to have an interest in English taught with special teaching methods; most students do not have confidence in their English; majority of students answered that English study is needed for students of sports. The biggest motivation for the sport students to learn English was 'better communication skills', followed by 'sports exchange opportunities', 'sports diplomacy and international sports events'; majority of students answered that Sports English class which focuses on sports is necessary in terms of their career after graduation. The finding from this study serves as a foundation in developing an ESP program for sports majors.
Soo-Yeoun Kim & Ji-Eun Kim 2016. A Study on ESP Skating English Education Based on Job Analysis. This study aims to provide skating ESP(English for Specific Purposes) education model for skating instructors in Korea. For this purpose, a total of twenty-seven professional skating instructors were surveyed according to a questionnaire, which asked about their English skills and perspective of the importance of English study and English skating class. The main results are as follows: most skating instructors' confidence in their English is low; majority of them answered that English study is needed for skating instructors; a majority of them want English teaching that focused on speaking and teaching activities. After that, skating instructors' jobs were analyzed using the DACUM(Developing A Curriculum Method). A DACUM committee extracted the duties and tasks which require English education and conducted a survey that targeted skating instructors. When interpreting the study on ESP Skating English Education based on job analysis, it was evident that the English language would be essential for enabling effective communication with judges during national sports competitions, information exchange with foreign skaters, and for technical skating instructions. This study aims to examine whether the fundamental frequency (F0) varies depending on languages or distinguishes between L1 (first language) and L2 (second language) speech and whether the type of materials which vary in control of consonant voicing affects the use of F0-especially, mean F0. For this purpose, we compared productions of two languages produced by Korean L2 learners of English to those of Korean-English bilingual speakers. Twelve Korean L2 speakers of English and twelve Korean-English bilingual speakers participated in this study. The subjects read aloud 22 declarative sentences-balanced and unbalanced-once in English and once in Korean. Mean F0 of Korean was higher than that of English for both speaker groups, and the difference in the value of mean F0 between the Korean and English sentences was different depending on the type of materials that the participants read. With regard to F0 range, the L2 speakers had a larger F0 range in English than in Korean; however, the effect of language on F0 range was not statistically significant for the bilingual speakers. These results indicate that language-specific properties may affect the use of F0, in particular, mean F0.

The purpose of this paper is to suggest the development of the Guidelines on VTS English language competency test, according to IALA Guideline 1132 - VTS Voice Communications and Phraseology. As the foundation for improving VTSOs' communication capabilities throughout their career lifecycle in terms of training, accreditation, and revalidation, a development of a VTS-specific language testing system with explicit language testing evaluation criteria becomes more critical. With the aim of facilitating the discussion, a range of suggestions to be considered in the development of Guidelines on the VTS English competency test are made
It is simply not true that anyone who can speak English can teach it. Language teaching is both a science and an art; its methods are based on a theoretical foundation and implemented by techniques. However, at a time like the present, when the scientific justification for our methods seems to be uncertain, we should concern ourselves less with theory and more with developing techniques that work with our students. The success of language teaching must be evaluated by the effectiveness of the techniques used. The purpose of the present study is to suggest some useful techniques that the teacher can utilize in teaching English as a foreign language in the elementary school. The techniques suggested are based on the investigation of the characteristics peculiar to children. The investigation takes into account cognitive, affective, and linguistic factors affecting specific techniques. The goal of language teaching is communication and all techniques should move toward this end. The resourceful teacher will provide techniques which exact more and more from the students and less and less from the teacher.

Previous studies on the bilinguals' lexical selection have suggested some evidence in favor of language-specific hypothesis. The purpose of this study was to see whether Korean-English bilinguals' semantic systems of Korean and English are shared or separated between the two languages. In a series of picture-word interference tasks, participants were to name the pictures in Korean or in English with distractor words printed either in Korean or English. The distractor words were either semantically identical, related, unrelated to the picture, or nonexistant. The response time of naming was facilitated when distractor words were semantically identical for both same-(Naming pictures in English/korean with English/Korean distractor words) and different-language pairs(Naming pictures in English with Korean distractor words and vice versa). But this facilitation effect was stronger when naming was produced in their native language, which in this case was Korean. Also, inhibitory effect was shown when the picture and its distractor word were semantically related in both same- and different-language paired conditions. These results show that bilinguals'two lexicons compete to some extent when selecting the target word. In this viewpoint, it can be concluded that the lexicons of either languages may not be entirely but partly overlapping in bilinguals.
This paper deals with a part-specific analysis of grammatical errors in the production of the English passive in writing. The purpose of the study is dual: to explore common error types in forming the passive; and to provide plausible sources of the errors, with special attention to the role of the native language. To this end, this study obtained a large amount of data from Korean EFL university students using an essay writing task. The results show that in forming the passive sentence, errors were made in various ways and that the most common problem was the formation of the be-auxiliary, in particular, the proper use of tense and S-V agreement. Another important finding was that the global errors found in this study were not necessarily those with the greatest frequency. Also corroborated was the general claim that many factors work together to account for errors. In many cases, interlingual and intralingual factors were shown to interact with each other to explain the passive errors made by Korean students. On the basis of the results, suggestions are made for effective and well-formed use of the passive sentence.
