흑인시인 이써리지 나이트의 인종과 사랑 (Race and Love in Etheridge Knight)

  • This explores an African American male poet, Etheridge Knight, and his poems. He died in 1991 and had been wounded in the battle field during the Korean War (1950-1953). Particularly, engaged in the war as a boy soldier, due to his wound, he had turned to a drug addict. Despite his experience in the war, Knight didn't write poems much about the war and wartime experience. Rather than war experience, for Knight, the prison gave him a strong motivation to be a poet with Gwendolyn Brooks' help. Further, Korean scholars are not familiar with contemporary African American poets, and my study is an introduction of those poets. Since in Korea researches on African American poets have been relatively rare, it is needed to sincerely work on those poets. The none-white writers, above all, penetrate the undercurrent of canonized American poets and poems. By examining Knight's poems, I eventually align a notion of the ethnic with racial minorities in the U. S.

대졸 청년층 취업준비노력의 실태와 성과 (Effects of Pre-Employment Efforts of the College Graduate Youth in Korea)

  • 이 연구는 청년들의 취업준비노력이 노동시장 이행에 어떤 영향을 미치는가를 살펴보고 있다. 노동시장 성과는 첫 일자리로의 이행기간, 300인 이상 사업장 취업여부, 첫 일자리의 임금수준의 3가지 범주로 구분하여 살펴보았다. 취업준비노력이 첫 일자리로의 이행기간에 미친 효과를 보면 재학 중 일 경험과 취업준비 시기는 첫 일자리로의 탈출확률을 높이지만, 학점, 영어점수, 면접횟수는 오히려 이행기간을 장기화시키는 효과가 있었다. 취업효과는 학력에 따라 그 효과가 상이하였다. 전문대 졸업자는 교육훈련과 재학 중 일 경험이, 대졸자는 학점, 현장실습, 외국어능력 등이 좋은 일자리로의 진입에 통계적으로 유의미한 영향을 미치고 있다. 임금효과에서도 전문대 졸업자와 4년제 대학 졸업자의 차이가 발견되었다. 전문대 졸업자는 재학 중 직업훈련, 재학 중 일 경험, 영어능력이 임금수준을 높이고 있다. 4년제 대학 대졸자는 졸업 후 직업훈련을 받거나 재학 중 일 경험은 오히려 임금수준을 낮추지만, 영어점수와 재학 중 취업준비는 임금보상이 높은 일자리로 진입할 확률을 높이는 것으로 나타났다.

표준어와 경상 지역 방언의 한국어 모음 발음에 따른 영어 모음 발음의 영향에 대한 연구 (Influence of standard Korean and Gyeongsang regional dialect on the pronunciation of English vowels)

  • 본 논문의 목적은 한국어 표준어와 경상 지역 방언의 한국어 모음 발음의 영어 모음 발음에 대한 영향을 연구하는데 있다. 데이터 자료는 한국인의 영어 발음 음성 코퍼스(Korean-Spoken English Corpus, K-SEC)를 활용하였다. 이중 일곱 개의 한국어 단모음이 포함된 단어와 열 개의 영어 단모음이 포함된 단어가 선정되어 분석되었다. 선정된 자료는 외국 거주 경험이 없는 성인 남성 표준어 화자와 경상 지역 방언 화자에 의해 발화되었다. 녹음된 코퍼스 자료의 포먼트 주파수는 음성 분석 프로그램인 Praat에서 제공하는 스펙트로그램을 통해 측정되었다. 녹음된 자료들은 포먼트 구역 그래프로 나타내어 분석되었다. 결과에 의하면, 한국어와 영어 모음의 발화에서 경상 지역 방언 화자가 강한 후설성을 보인 반면에 표준어 화자는 비교적 전설성이 강하게 나타났다. 또한, 표준어와 경상 지역 방언의 한국어 모음 발음 차이 (/으/, /어/)는 대치되는 영어 모음 발음(/ə/, /ʊ/)의 조음 방식에 영향을 미쳤다. 지역 방언의 사용과 무관한 한국인의 일반적인 모음 발음 특징은 영어 원어민 화자보다 조음 구역이 좁다는 것이다. 이에 한국인은 전반적으로 긴장 모음과 이완 모음을 구별하는 데 어려움이 있지만, 영어 원어민 화자는 모음 조음에 명확한 구분이 있다.

CMC기반의 영어학습 환경에서 상호작용 촉진을 위한 교수설계가 영어학습에 미치는 효과 : 교양 영작문 과목을 중심으로 (A Study on the Effectiveness of the Instructional Design for Further Interaction on English Learning in a CMC Based Language Learning Environment: Focusing on University General English Education)

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of CMC-based English learning. In this study, CMC components were found to provide circumstances of facilitating interactions between student-student and student-student-teacher, which enabled students to accomplish language learning tasks. Findings of this study are as follows: First, CMC based language learning experience helps students have positive attitudes toward their English language learning. Second, student-student-instructor interaction group outperformed other groups in academic achievement and class activity participation. Third, cooperative learning groups more actively participated in the class activity than the individual learning group resulting in better academic performances. These findings supported the fact that cooperative learning with CMC components are useful in bringing more class participation and positive attitude that were believed to foster language learning than other groups in traditional language learning environments. This study suggests that the instructor needs to use instructional design strategies helpful to facilitate active interactions between instructors and students in order to achieve better effectiveness of English learning in a CMC based learning environment.

대학생들의 3D 가상현실을 이용한 채팅의 영어학습 효과

  • The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of 3D avatar-based Virtual Reality chatting on college students' English learning achievement. Forty college sophomore students participated at this study and the research lesson continued for 8 weeks. They were administered to take a pretest to evaluate their vocabulary knowledge and writing skills. Their progress was assessed on the basis of midterm. Finally, a post-questionnaire was administered to measure their interest and understanding toward their learning experience in 3D avatar-based Virtual chatting. The results of this study indicated that there was a statistically significant difference between the control group and experimental group with respect to their midterm scores and writing. The result of the post-survey indicated the interest of English was statistically higher than the understanding of English.

  • 아프리카 문학의 대표적인 소설가 치누아 아체베는 아프리카 민속문학의 대표작을 세웠다는 데에서도 기여한 바가 있으나 영문 소설의 외연을 확장하였다는 점에서도 그 기여한 바가 적지 않다. 이에 본 논문에서는 그의 대표적인 소설 '모든 것이 산산이 부서진다'외 1편의 소설을 분석하여 그가 영어로 소설을 쓰면서도 나이지리아의 토착어인 이보어의 속담, 문구 등을 교차 사용하여 기존 영문 소설에서는 찾아볼 수 없었던 정서를 담는 등으로 영문 소설의 외연을 확장시켰다는 점을 논증하고자 한다.

Teaching English Overseas: From EFL Instructors' Perspectives

  • Given the noteworthy increase in the number of native-born English-speaking. EFL instructors teaching overseas, this research examined 6 American EFL instructors who had taught English abroad with special reference to their experience as foreigner instructors in their respective host countries. With the use of interviews as the major technique employed, this research was centered on identifying conflicts or difficulties the research participants encountered as novice instructors, both internal and external to the classroom settings of their host countries. Research findings revealed that the current participants were not adequately prepared to cope with new and unfamiliar physical settings of their host countries, or to familiarize themselves with their new classroom settings and students. Studying the various the conflicts which native EFL instructors encountered, both internal and external to the classroom environment, will hopefully shed light on, and provide a more accurate portrayal of EFL professionals' teaching overseas and may provide possible insights into potential solutions to them. Furthermore, the research findings were considered and discussed in terms of acculturation theory.

아동의 지능, 보존개념의 발달과 영어학습과의 관계분석 (Children's Intelligence, Concept of Conservation, and the Relations With Learning English)

  • This study investigated the relations of children's age, intelligence, and the concept of conservation to their learning of English. Ten 4-year-old children from 1 child-care center and 13 7-year-old children from 1 elementary school were tested after completion of 8 sessions of experimental English classes. Children's intelligence was measured by K-WPPSI for 4-year olds and K-WISC for 7-year-olds. Children were tested for number and liquid conservations. A Korean teacher with 11 years of experience of teaching children at American elementary schools taught the 2 groups with the same subjects and methods. Data were analysed by independent samples t-test, Mann-Whitney U test, and Pearson's r. The results showed that children's age and the concept of conservation were related to English learning. No statistically significant relationship with IQ was found.

How to Teach English Literature through the Independent Seminar Class in the Doctoral Program

  • This paper discusses the independent seminar as one of the appropriate courses, in particular, for the students who study English literature in the doctoral program. Those who take the Ph.D. program in English literature are considered as future scholars or teachers. In taking the coursework, they not only delve into the knowledge of literature, but also begin to establish broader and deeper senses of research ability. The independent seminar class helps them build such senses through the way in which they experience to the development of the syllabus by themselves. Furthermore, in contrast to a regular class, in which a group of students learn in a classroom, the independent seminar gives each student intensive interactions with his/her professor through the out-of-classroom circumstances, since the seminar is based upon one-on-one study between the student and the professor.

고등학교 1학년 교과서에 나타난 문화소재 분석과 지도방안 (An analysis and teaching of cultural contents in the first-grade High School English textbooks)

  • In the EFL context, Korean students don't have enough opportunities to directly experience the target culture, prompting the need to offer some well-organized culture education in class. The goals of this study are to analyze how many cultural contents are reflected in High School English textbooks and to suggest an implication for cultural learning. These textbooks were carefully examined, focusing on the cultural contents, by four categories: 'cultural skill section', 'cultural patterns', 'related language skills', and 'target countries'. The results of the analysis were like the following: First, although many of the textbooks are dealing with the culture skill sections, their contents were still wanting consistency and were small in quantity. Second, as for the cultural patterns, the pages dealing with behavioral culture were 43%, spiritual culture, 35.7%, material culture, 21.3%. Third, as for the related language skills, the cultural contents in the textbooks were organized in the order of listening, reading, speaking, writing, and cultural skill sections. Since it is impossible to separate language skills from culture, we suggest that the aspects of target culture should be incorporated in various forms into the learning situations. Fourth, as for the issue of target countries, the contents about the general or whole English culture were insufficient. So we suggest that English textbooks should play an essential role in providing students with various cultural information about various English speaking countries.
