Word Frequency Effects on Duration and F0 in English Homophone Utterances

  • We investigate whether the word frequency effects occur in native speakers' homophone speech in such a way that less frequent words are produced with greater magnitudes in duration and F0 than more frequent words. Acoustic analyses of homophone data produced by four speakers reveal that there is a tendency that vowels in less frequent words get longer than those in more frequent words, and statistical tests verify the significance of their differences. On the other hand, no considerable correlation has been discovered between F0 and word frequency.

The Effects of Vocabulary Exercises on EFL Vocabulary Learning and Retention

  • This study investigates the effects of written vocabulary exercises on lexical knowledge. Korean university students learning English as a foreign language were randomly assigned to one of four conditions-Condition 1 (having students match word form with word meaning), Condition 2 (having students fill in the blank provided with a list of words), Condition 3 (having students write sentences with the target words), Condition 4 (having students do three practices with the same vocabulary exercise as the condition 1). Each type of exercises in Condition 1, 2, and 3 was designed to classify a different level of mental processing except Condition 4 with multiple encounters of the target words. Learners' vocabulary knowledge of this study was obtained using a format adopted from the Vocabulary Knowledge Scale (VKS) immediately and two weeks later. The findings indicated that: (1) Condition 4 having students do three matching vocabulary exercises was as effective as the condition 3 (one writing exercise) on the immediate learning of word; (2) although there was no significant difference of the effect of vocabulary exercises between Condition 3 and 4, Condition 4 asking students to do three matching vocabulary exercises was the most effective way of vocabulary retention after two weeks.

Effects of Word Frequency on a Lenition Process: Evidence from Stop Voicing and /h/ Reduction in Korean

  • The present study examined whether words with higher frequency have more exposure to the lenition process such as intervocalic stop voicing or /h/ reduction in the production of the Korean speakers. Experiment 1 and Experiment 2 tested if word-internal intervocalic voicing and /h/ reduction occur more often in the words with higher frequency than less frequent words respectively. Results showed that the rate of voicing was not significantly different between the high frequency group and the low frequency group; rather both high and low frequency words were shown to be fully voiced in this prosodic position. However, intervocalic /h/s were deleted more in high frequency words than in low frequency words. Low frequency words showed that other phonetic variants such as [h] and [w] were found more often than in high frequency group. Thus the results of the present study are indefinitive as to the relationship between the word frequency and lenition with the data at hand.

Effects of vowel duration on the perceived naturalness of English monosyllabic words ending in a stop: Some preliminary findings

  • Preliminary findings are reported from five experiments testing the perceived naturalness of word tokens whose vowel durations are altered. The stimuli were minimal pairs of English words ending in a voiced/voiceless plosive. Results show an asymmetric effect of shortening and lengthening of the vowel on the perceived naturalness of the word. Incremental shortening of vowel duration initially shows a stable degree of perceived naturalness but rapidly deteriorates beyond a certain point. On the contrary, only a small degree of lengthening of the vowel made the perceived naturalness of the word quickly decay, but there was a floor effect such that the perceived degree of naturalness does not lower beyond a certain level. Further, the tokens with the original vowel duration were not always scored higher than the stimuli with a small degree of shortening. Future studies should address the issue of speaking rate and the ratio between the vowel and the stop closure duration to better understand the phenomenon. The issue investigated here has implications on the role of prototypical exemplars in the perception of phonotactic naturalness.

Aspects of the word-final stop releasing and its phonetic correlates in reading the English isolated words enumerated (영어 나열형 고립 단어 읽기에서 어말 폐쇄음의 파열 양상 및 그 음성적 상관성)

  • This experimental research shows that, in reading of the English isolated words that are enumerated, the releasing of the word-final stop is employed for signaling enumeration in company with the well-known intonational pattern for it. Furthermore, this study tries to find the conceivable phonetic correlates of the releasing of the stop in word-final position, focusing on the association of the stop releasing/nonreleasing with i) the POA (Place of Articulation) distinction of the word-final stop, ii) the various qualities of the preceding vowel placed before the final stop, and iii) the voice distinction of the stop in the word-final position.

An EPG Study of the Articulatory Difference between Korean and English Affricates (한국어 파찰음과 영어 파찰음의 조음적 차이에 관한 연구)

  • Using EPG, the stop and fricative portions of the Korean and English afficates were examined to find out whether the stop and fricative portions of Korean affricates are the same as those of English ones in articulation, as generally assumed in the literature. The English affricate in the word 'choose' is classified as alveopalatal just like the Korean affricate in the word 'cam'. The results of the EPG data showed that Korean affricates were not articulated the same as those in English, especially in the stop portion. In English, the stop portion of 'choose' was quite similar to /t/ as 'tooth', but in Korean, the stop portion of 'cam' was somewhat different from /t/ in 'tam'. More specifically, the stop portion of /t/ in 'tam' was articulated with the contact at the upper teeth and the alveolar ridge, but the stop portion of /t/ in 'cam' was articulated with the contact in the alveopalatal region. This shifting in the place of articulation of the stop portions of the Korean affricate (from dental and alveolar to alveopalatal) can be explained. Unlike English affricates, the stop portions of Korean affricates and the fricative portions of Korean affricates are co-articulated at the same place of articulation.

  • Emotion is very important feature in educational situation. Because it has high influence to memory, educational achievement, motivation. This study tried to find out possibility of serious game as emotional engagement tool in educational situation. We did our pilot experiment to elementary school students who are english as second language. In this L2 learning situation, we did our basic experiment with English language learning serious game called 'Word Collectrian". Word Collectrian has some features for emotional engagement. It has interaction for dynamic word visualization, providing context video for word usage, putting visualized word on learner's virtual home. According to experimental result, word Collectrian has possibility for educational achievement and emotional engagement effect.

No Exception in the English Lexicon: A Reply to Hammond (1999)

  • This paper aims to review Hammond's (1999) analysis of English word stress and propose an alternative by exploring two questions: Why English words display flexible stress patterns and what are the conditions all English words have to obey. As answers to the questions I propose an invisible suffix after words with final stress, foot structures with two levels, and four constraints, two of them are attained by revision of Hammond's. As long as words satisfy the constraints, more than one foot structures are allowed. That is why the English lexicon displays flexibility.

Alignment of Hypernym-Hyponym Noun Pairs between Korean and English, Based on the EuroWordNet Approach (유로워드넷 방식에 기반한 한국어와 영어의 명사 상하위어 정렬)

  • This paper presents a set of methodologies for aligning hypernym-hyponym noun pairs between Korean and English, based on the EuroWordNet approach. Following the methods conducted in EuroWordNet, our approach makes extensive use of WordNet in four steps of the building process: 1) Monolingual dictionaries have been used to extract proper hypernym-hyponym noun pairs, 2) bilingual dictionary has converted the extracted pairs, 3) Word Net has been used as a backbone of alignment criteria, and 4) WordNet has been used to select the most similar pair among the candidates. The importance of this study lies not only on enriching semantic links between two languages, but also on integrating lexical resources based on a language specific and dependent structure. Our approaches are aimed at building an accurate and detailed lexical resource with proper measures rather than at fast development of generic one using NLP technique.

The influence of task demands on the preparation of spoken word production: Evidence from Korean

  • It was shown in speech production studies that the preparation unit of spoken word production is language particular, such as onset phonemes for English and Dutch, syllables for Mandarin Chinese, and morae for Japanese. However, there have been inconsistent results on whether the onset phoneme is a planning unit of spoken word production in Korean. In this study, two sets of experiments investigated possible influences of task demands on the phonological preparation in native Korean adults, namely, implicit priming and word naming with the form preparation paradigm. Only the word naming task, but not the implicit priming task, showed a significant onset priming effect, even though there were significant syllable priming effects in both tasks. Following the attentional theory ($O^{\prime}S{\acute{e}}aghdha$ & Frazer, 2014), these results suggest that task demands might play a role in the absence/presence of onset priming effects in Korean. Native Korean speakers could maintain their attention to the shared onset phonemes in word naming, which is not very demanding, while they have difficulties in allocating their attention to such units in a more cognitive-demanding implicit priming, even though both tasks involve accessing phonological codes. These findings demonstrate that there are cross-linguistic differences in the first selectable unit in preparation of spoken word production, but within a single language, the preparation unit might not be immutable.
