Interpretation as a Moral Act: Kennedy and the University of Alabama Crisis

  • Faced with a series of violent confrontations on civil rights in the State of Alabama in 1963, John F. Kennedy gave a formal speech that heralded the end of his unusually long-drawn-out aloofness from the issue. The speech marked a new phase in Kennedy's political leadership as the thirty-fifth president of the United States employed a rhetoric of moral failure, defining the University of Alabama crisis and the ensuing civil rights struggle as a threat to American federalism and national ideals. This paper employs the formal, neoclassical terms of rhetoric to analyze the distinct mode of persuasion Kennedy employs in which the former U.S. president (1) appeals to moral interpretation as a proper solution to the aggravating social situation and (2) puts an interpretation on civil disorder in Birmingham, Alabama as a major threat to national identity, rather than a regional, largely party-political question.

The Medium of Poetry: Romantic Writing and the Cultural Politics of Physicality in "Hyperion"

  • This essay addresses the missing conversation in Keats studies by showing how an enduring mystery of Romantic writing—the medium of poetic process and the physical conditions of enunciation—remains a central question in the Hyperion fragments. It is my argument that the tropes of material textuality prevalent in the Hyperions represent a bold cultural statement in which Keats reacts to the major premises underlying the Romantic culture's notion of poetry as abstraction: the Romantic notion of literary (re)production as a product of the activity of a mind. Keats's self-conscious, symbolic representation of the mechanics of poetry-making can be read as an investigation of the ways in which the Romantics were aware of and even eager to articulate the instabilities of their position on the relations between words and things. This essay does not focus exclusively on the physical embodiment of Keats's work as such, so much as the second-generation Romantic poet's contribution to the Romantics' self-conscious and critical understanding of the depiction, perception and ideologies of their poetry and its mediation.

소설 내러티브의 변화: 텍스트마이닝 기반 장르별 내러티브 분석 (A Convergent Study on the Narration of Novel through Text-mining)

  • Using recently emerging quantitative methods, this article provides a comparative study of the diachronic changes in the narrations of novel, history, and science from the early 18th-century to the 20th-century. To trace the narrative changes in different genres, this article discusses how text-mining methodology can be introduced in literary studies. We compared the traces of narrative in three genres—novel, history, and science—as a pilot study, with the three major grammatical elements of narrative: pronoun, subordinating conjunction, and action verbs in past tense. The results of data-mining show that the use of pronoun and action verb has increased in the genre of novel toward the $20^{th}$ century, while history and science has developed less story-like writing styles.

중등 영문학 교재로서의 『한국인 우한의 모험』 연구 (Teaching The Adventures of Wu Han of Korea in Secondary Education)

  • This paper examines the benefits of teaching The Adventures of Wu Han of Korea in secondary education in Korea. The novel is a rare sample of twentieth-century American fiction that features a Korean protagonist. What is notable in this novel is that its major Korean characters seem to share the mindset of their American author and creator and represent the Western perspective in their discourse of Korean/Eastern idea and culture. The novel is packed with Orientalist attitudes and could be taught as a case study of Orientalism. Teachers can also use the novel to teach students the art of close reading by analyzing selected scenes from the text.

Wide Sargasso Sea: An Elegy of Class Conflict in Jamaica

  • This paper is to scrutinize Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea through a Marxist criticism. While critics were industriously excavating discourses of feminism, post-colonialism, and racism in the novel, they tended to regard the Marxist attribute as supplementary material and to diminish the significance not considering as an independent subject to be examined. However, the novel, in which all the major relationships are based on capital, exemplifies class conflict between the bourgeois and the proletariat. Marx and Engels believe that the foundation of our society is capital and that society evolves through class conflict to obtain more capital, and thus they assert people's relations are the product of the commodification of individuals. Furthering their study, Louis Althusser specifies the power system through the (repressive) state apparatus and the ideological state apparatus. With the theories of the thinkers' above, this paper analyzes the relationship between Annette and Mason, Antoinette and her nameless husband, allegedly Rochester, Rochester and Amelie, and Rochester and Daniel Cosway. This paper offers an alternative reading of a classical feminist and post-colonial text.

Translation, Creation, and Empowerment in Chaucer's Clerk's Tale

  • In this paper, I discuss Chaucer's Clerk's Tale by viewing the relationship between Walter and Griselda as that of a medieval translator and his translation. My major concern is how a medieval translation can serve power, more specifically the consolidation of power under particular historical circumstances. The motive and the process of Walter's creative translation of Griselda are closely examined to show that his translation, which includes a creation of a new Griselda as a pinnacle of wifely virtue of patience, is performed as a form of political propaganda, ultimately aimed at strengthening his governing power over his people and land. My discussion of the Clerk's Tale ends with the comparison of the two translators, Walter and the Clerk, the latter of whom is an example of an unsuccessful translator for his lack of creation in the translation.

  • In order to improve and promote immersive learning experiences for English as a Second Language (ESL) students, the deployment of a YOLOv5 model for object identification in videos is proposed. The procedure includes collecting annotated datasets, preparing the data, and then fine-tuning a model using the YOLOv5 framework. The study's major objective is to integrate a well-trained model into ESL instruction in order to analyze the effectiveness of AI application in the field.

Employment and Wage Level of University Graduates in the Field of Clothing and Fashion

  • The purpose of this study is 1) to compare the employment status and wage level of "Clothing and Fashion" major (CF major) graduates with those from other majors and 2) to examine factors affecting the employment status and wage level of CF major university graduates. The data were pooled from the 2009-2012 Graduates Occupational Mobility Survey Data, conducted by Korea Employment Information Service. First, when graduates of CF major were compared with other majors in the same academic area-natural science and arts-, the rate of employment was higher for CF majors than that of other majors; on the other hand, there is no difference in the wage levels between those with graduates in CF majors and those with other majors. Second, we examined factors affecting CF major graduates' employment and wage level based on graduates' individual factors, university factor, and job preparation factors. Employment status of graduates in CF major was predicted by respondent's gender and university type, and work experience. The wage level of CF major graduates was significantly predicted by individual factors (e.g., gender and age, university factors (e.g., university type, university program, location), and job preparation factors (e.g., certificates, overseas experience of foreign language training, English test scores). The results of this study would provide a guide to direct university educational program in order to assess the current capabilities in the field of clothing and fashion.

간호학과 학생과 일반학과 학생의 자기 조절학습 능력과 영어 성취도에 관한 연구 (A Study on self-regulated learning ability and English learning achievement for students majoring in the science of nursing and other major)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 자기조절학습 능력이 학년별로 유의미한 차이를 가져온다는 결과를 가져온 공과대학 학생들의 자기조절학습능력 수준에 관한 선행연구의 타당성이 다른 대상자에게서도 타당한지를 검증하고자 하는 의도에서 간호학과 학생과 일반학과 학생들의 자기조절학습 능력을 고찰하였다. 본 연구에서는 자기조절학습 능력이 높은 학생이 영어 성취도도 높은지 알아보고자 2010년 3월 10일부터 2010년 6월 10일까지 교양 영어 과목을 수강하는 학생들의 자기조절학습 능력은 어떤 수준인지, 계열 별로 어떤 차이가 있는지 알아보았다. 비슷한 성적의 두 집단을 동일한 조건 하에 온라인과 오프라인 수업을 병행하면서 자기조절학습 능력을 고찰한 결과, 전공 계열에 따른 유의미한 차이를 가져왔고 영어 성취도 역시 유의미한 결과를 가져왔다. 뚜렷한 목표지향성과 학습에 대한 내재적 동기 유발이 잘 되어있는 학생의 경우 스스로 학습할 수 있는 자기조절학습 능력의 훈련이 잘 되어있고 이는 결국 영어 성취도에도 긍정적인 결과를 가져온다는데 의의가 있다.

음성 훈련에 따른 영어 모음의 인지와 발화 관계 (Relation between Perception and Production of English Vowels by Phonetic Training)

  • 본 연구에서는 한국 학생들이 영어 모음들을 어떻게 인지하고 발화하는지 알아보기 위해서, 영어 전공과목을 수강하는 42명의 대학생들을 대상으로 11개의 영어 목표 모음 /i, ɪ, eɪ, ${\varepsilon}$, ${\ae}$, ${\alpha}$, ɔ, oʊ, ʊ, u, ʌ/이 들어간 영어 단어를 가지고 인지와 발화테스트를 사전과 사후 두 차례 실시하였다. 통제집단에 대해서는 영어음성학 전공수업을 통한 이론학습만을 진행하였고, 실험집단에 대해서는 이론학습과 더불어 인지와 발화 훈련을 4주간 실시하였다. 구체적인 연구의 목적은 사전테스트를 실시한 이후 4주간의 훈련과 연습을 통해 사후 인지와 발화 정확도가 얼마나 향상되었는지를 알아보는 것과 두 집단이 보인 인지와 발화의 상관관계가 사전과 사후테스트에서 어떠한지를 살펴보는 것이다. 테스트 결과 사전테스트에서는 통제와 실험 두 집단이 인지와 발화에서 강한 상관성을 보인 반면, 사후테스트에서는 두 집단 모두 인지와 발화 간에 상관성이 없는 것으로 나타났다. 이와 같은 결과는 두 집단의 사후 인지와 발화 정확도의 변화가 주된 요인인 것으로 나타났다. 통제집단은 인지에서 사후 변동 폭이 컸던 반면, 실험집단은 발화의 변동 폭이 더 컸고, 이러한 사후 인지와 발화의 변동이 상관관계에도 영향을 주었다. 이와 같은 실험 결과를 바탕으로 교육적인 함축점도 논의되었다.
