  • As consumer's desire becomes various, agility of mold manufacturing is most important factor for competence of manufacturer. In common works to use commercial CAM system to generate tool path, some decision making process is required to produce optimal result of CAM systems, The paper proposes a methodology for computer-assisted tool selection procedures for various cutting type, such as rough, semi-rough and finish cuts. The system provides assist-tool-items for machining of design model part of injection meld die by analyzing sliced CAD model of die cavity and core. Also, the generating NC-code of the tool size is used to calculate machining time. The system is developed with commercial CAM using API. This module will be used for optimization of tool selection and planning process.

  • This paper presents a methodology for In-Process monitoring of tool wear by using ultrasonic sensor in turning operation. An integrated single ultrasonic transducer operation at a frequency of 10MHz is placed in contact with the insert tip. The change in amount of the reflected energy from the nose and flank of the tool can be related to the level of tool wear and the mechanical integrity of the tool. As the results, the tool wear monitoring system based on the ultrasonic pulse-echo method was proposed, it is useful to determine a tool life and tool change time.

  • A 5-axis NC milling technology is presented on ruled surface. Problems in 5-axis NC machining are such as tool interference, tool collision and change of tool attitude, etc. The change of tool attitude causes rotation of cutter and variation of feedrate to overcut part surface. This poor control of tool attitude is the primary problem in multi-axis NC milling. This paper observes ruled surface for control of tool attitude. Ruled surface is composed of directrix and ruling, line of constant magnitude. Directrix corresponds to points on part surface and Ruling cutting tool. Trajectory of tool movement corresponds to ruled surface.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to design a snow-removing tool using an ergonomic approach. Background: It is necessary to remove snow on the garden of a house or side street to prevent a fall hazard. When a user removes snow using a snow-removing tool, he or she experiences lots of physical discomfort. Therefore it is necessary to design a snow-removing tool to reduce a user's physical discomfort. Method: In this study, a new design for a snow-removing tool was developed considering user needs. The design prototype was compared with an existing tool through electromyography and subjective evaluation. Results: From the comparison evaluation, significant differences between the new design and the existing tool were identified in both muscle fatigue and subjective rating of discomfort. Conclusion: The result showed that the new design is better from the aspect of easing physical discomfort. Application: A new snow-removing tool can be developed using the design so that it can reduce a user's physical discomfort.

  • Recently, as the demand of small-sized precision parts is rising in precision industry such as mobile, automobile, optic. etc. the requirement of small-sized machine tool is increasing. Desktop machine tool define small-sized machine tool that is able to install in table. According to diminishing in size, Desktop machine tool is able to economize production cost by reducing work area and consuming electric power. But Desktop machine tool generates vibration in acceleration and deceleration modes by inertia force of moving part. Also vibration is generated when it move simultaneously two axis or three axis. Such generating vibration situation is reason of declining stiffness of machine tool structure because of smallizing in size. And this vibration has a large effect on precision of machining products. Therefore, evaluating of the control characteristic is necessary for minimizing vibration of machine tool as much as possible to accomplish precision machining of small-sized parts

  • In this paper, the theoretical tool displacement and surface roughness are analyzed based on the tool locus of a 2-dimensional tool vibrator. At first, the effects assuming no structural deformation of such variables as frequency, amplitude and phase difference that determine tool loci are simulated. The results show that larger amplitude and/or higher frequency makes better surface. However, a real tool vibrator has the structural deformation, much or less, depending on the excitation frequency. Applying FEM analysis to the deformation of a designed 2D tool vibrator according to the excitation, it has been proved that in this case the displacement is 5${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ at 1KHz and almost 0 at 20KHz even under the same excitation amplitude.

  • In this study, presintered low purity alumina ceramics were machined with various tools to clarify the effects of the tool material, cutting condition and tool geometry on machinability. The main conclusions obtained were as follows. (a)The wear of tungsten carbide tool becomes smaller with the increase of the feed and clearance angle, and with the decrease of rake angle, especially exhibiting considerably smaller wear with both the decrease of rake angle and the increase of clearance angle. (b) So far as turning the ceramic presintered at low temperature, the diamond tool shows the best performance with higher feed. (c) The effect on the tool wear of the feed, clearance angle and rake angle becomes smaller in turning the ceramic presintered at higher temperature. (d) The tool wear is not severely affected by the depth of cut.

  • Wear and fracture mode of ceramic tool for hardened SKD11 steel was investigated by face milling in this study. The cutting force and Acoustic Emission(AE) signal were utilized to detect the wear and fracture of ceramic tool. The following conclusions were obtained : (1) The wear and fracture modes of ceramic tool are characterized by three types: \circled1wear which has normal wear and notch wear, \circled2 wear caused by scooping on the rake face, \circled3 large fracture caused by thermal crack in the rake face. (2) The wear behaviour of ceramic tool can be detected by the increase of mean cutting force and the variation of the AE RMS voltage. (3) The catastrophic fracture of ceramic tool can be detected by the cutting force(Fz-component). (4) As the hardness of work material increased, Acoustic Emission RMS value and mean cutting force(Fz) increased linearly, but the tool life decreased.

  • A method for determining the collision-free tool orientation for 5-axis milling is presented. In 5-axis milling, the proper tool orientation as well as the optimal CC-data has to be selected to machine the workpiece efficiently and accurately and accurately. Essentially, the tool orientation should be determined to avoid collisions between the tool and workpiece and to enable efficient machining. In this work, the tool orientation is determined at every CC-point which is assumed to be given. The procedure uses the potential energy method that assumes the tool and the part surfaces are charged with static electricity. This approach can detect can deteat both global and local collisions (gouging) irrespective of the tool shape. Further, in order to increase the machining efficiency, the material removal rate is maximized simultaneously.

  • A 5-axis CNC machine tool is more useful compared with a 3-axis machine tool, because the position and the orientation of a tool tip can be controlled simultaneously. Unlike the 3-axis machine tool, the 5-axis machine tool has the volumetric position error and volumetric orientation error due to the quasi-static error of each machine tool joint which is a major source of machined part error. So, the generalized error synthesis model of the 5-axis CNC machine tool was developed to predict and to compensate for the volumetric position error and the volumetric orientation error. It was proposed that a compensation algorithm to correct simultaneously the volumetric position error and the volumetric orientation error of the 5-axis CNC machine by error inverse kinematic.
