A friction damper installed at a building shows nonlinear behavior since its stick and slip states are occurred repeatedly depending on the amplitude of external loadings to dissipate input energy. Friction damping is existed for the building with a friction damper. In additionally viscous one is inherently included. Therefore, the building installed in such combined damping is quite involved to find the analytical solution. In this study, first, displacement and acceleration characteristics are identified based on the exact solution for a single-degree-freedom building with a friction damper having both friction and viscous damping. Second, in free vibration, the equivalent viscous damping ratio is obtained by the energy dissipation. Third, numerical analysis is carried out to find response configuration with various friction force ratios. Fourth, corresponding equivalent viscous damping ratio is derived with the finding that the response reaches into steady-state for both friction and viscous damped structure. It is deduced using balance of input external energy and output dissipation energy for steady-state response. Finally, the equivalent viscous damping ratios of free or harmonic vibration are verified through nonlinear analysis.
In this study, the characteristic of a vane pump of automotive power steering system is numerically analyzed. The vane pump changes the energy level of operation fluid by converting mechanical input power to hydraulic output. To simulate this mechanism, moving mesh technique is adopted. As a result, the flow rate and pressure are obtained by numerical analysis. The flow rate agrees well with the experimental data. Moreover, the variation and oscillation of the pressure around the rotating vane are observed. As a result of flow characteristics, The difference of pressure between both side of vane tip causes the back flow into the rotor. As the rotational velocity increases, the flow rate at the outlet and the pressure in the vane tip rises with higher amplitude of oscillation. In order to reducing the oscillation, the design of devices for decreasing the cross-area of the outlet part and returning the flow from the outlet to the inlet is required.

In this paper the system dynamic influences in actuators with variable stiffness as contemporary used in robotics for safety and efficiency reasons are investigated. Therefore, different configurations of serial and parallel elasticities are modeled by dynamic equations and linearized transfer functions. The latter ones are used to identify the characteristic behavior of the different systems and to study the effect of the different elasticities. As such actuation concepts are often used to reach energy-efficient operation, a power consumption analysis of the configurations is performed. From the comparison of this with the system dynamics, strategies to select and control stiffness are derived. Those are based on matching the natural frequencies or antiresonance modes of the actuation system to the frequency of the trajectory. Results show that exclusive serial and parallel elasticity can minimize power consumption when tuning the system to the natural frequencies. Antiresonance modes are an additional possibility for stiffness control in the series elastic setup. Configurations combining both types of elasticities do not provide further advantages regarding power reduction but an input parallel elasticity might enable for more versatile stiffness selection. Yet, design and control effort increase in such solutions. Topologies incorporating output parallel elasticity showed not to be beneficial in the chosen example but might do so in specific applications.

The portable hydraulic turbine we previously developed for open channels comprises an axial flow runner with an appended collection device and a diffuser section. The output power of this hydraulic turbine was improved by catching and accelerating an open-channel water flow using the kinetic energy of the water. This study aimed to further improve the performance of the hydraulic turbine. Using numerical analysis, we examined the performances and flow fields of a single runner and a composite body consisting of the runner and collection device by varying the airfoil and number of blades. Consequently, the maximum values of input power coefficient of the Runner D composite body with two blades (which adopts the MEL031 airfoil and alters the blade angle) are equivalent to those of the composite body with two blades (MEL021 airfoil). We found that the Runner D composite body has the highest turbine efficiency and thus the largest power coefficient. Furthermore, the performance of the Runner D composite body calculated from the numerical analysis was verified experimentally in an open-channel water flow test.

In this paper, two large current rectifiers are proposed based on two wye-connected autotransformers. The requirements of the ideal large current rectifier are analyzed, and it is concluded that the large current rectifier has a higher power density and a higher energy conversion efficiency when it is made up of two three-phase half-wave rectifiers and a wye-connected autotransformer. According to theoretical analysis results, the two novel wye-connected autotransformers are designed to feed two three-phase half-wave rectifiers. The two autotransformers can generate two groups of three-phase voltages with a 60o phase shifting, and their kVA ratings account for 95% and 80% of the load power, respectively. These values are less than those of a double star rectifier at 30% and 46%. From the input mains and output side, the power quality of the proposed rectifiers is the same as that of the double star rectifier. Some experiments validate the correctness of the theoretical analysis.
This study aims to provide power generating plants with eco-efficiency information. To implement the purposes, of study, both DEA(Data, Envelopment Analysis) model and interview were incorporated in terms of methodologies. To analyze the managerial efficiency, total labor cost and number of employees were considered as input factors. CO2, NOx, and water also were considered as input factors to analyze eco-efficiency. Both annual total power product and annual total revenue were used as output factors. CRS(Constant Return to Scale) and VRS(Variable Return to) model were facilitated in this analysis. According to the findings, most of the power plants were evaluated as 'Efficient'' taking into consideration of average value, both 0.928 from CCR model and 0.969 from VRS model. 7 DMUs including DMU3 and DMU12 are efficient out of 35 DMUs relatively, other DMUs are inefficient. For results of inefficient output factors distribution, it was found that inefficiency for NOx was marked relatively higher than CO2. In order to improve the eco-efficiency in the power plants in the long term, the target amount of Co2 as well as NOx reduction needs to be properly proposed in consideration of particularity of power plants. In the long run, renewable energy, alternative fuels should be adapted to reduce the eco-inefficient.

A solar array is main electrical energy source for Low-Earth-Orbit(LEO) satellite. The solar array cannot generate electrical energy during eclipse period, a battery supply electrical energy to the satellite. The electrical power of the solar array is changed in accordance with operating voltage and the solar array has the maximum power point. The solar array regulator makes the solar array supply electrical energy to the satellite and charge the battery. The solar array is connected to the solar array regulator input and the battery is connected to the solar array regulator output. The solar array regulator consists 2 of 3 hot redundant. One solar array regulator contains 3 DC-DC converters, and the solar array regulator operates stably even if the failure occur in one DC-DC converter. In this paper, the solar array regulator, the battery and the solar array operation is analyzed when the failure occur in one DC-DC converter.
Korean energy use in industrial sector has increased more rapidly than other sectors during 1980~2000 periods. Relatively higher increases in industrial sector energy consumption raise questions whether government policy of rationalization of industrial energy use has been effective. In this study, we use 80-85-90 and 90-95-00 constant price input-output table to analyze increases in industrial energy use. Using an adjusted version of structural decomposition model introduced by Chen and Rose (1990), we decompose Changes of energy use into 17 elements. We classify entire industry sector into 32 sectors including four energy sectors (coal and coal products, refined petroleum, electricity and town gas). We then analyze changes of energy use by industrial level to check differences among industrial energy demand structures. Finally, we compare three industries, electronic product manufacturing, metal manufacturing and construction, that represent technology and capital intensive, energy and material intensive and labor and capital intensive industry. As results, we find that high energy using industries make the most effort to reduce energy use. Primary metal, petrochemical and mon-metal industries show improvements in elements such as energy and material productivity, energy and material imports, energy substitution and material substitutions towards energy saving. These results imply that although those industries are heavy users of energy, they put the best effort to reduce energy use relative to other industries. We find various patterns of change in industrial energy use at industrial level. To reduce energy use, electronic product manufacturing industry needs more effort to improve technological change element while construction industry needs more effort to improve material input structure element.
Paris Agreement on Climate Change(2015) requires to reduce the greenhouse gas emission. One of the responses to the requirement is to change the proportion of power generation, which is summarized to the decrease in thermal power and the increase in new and renewable power. This article conducts a comparative analysis on the economic effects between thermal- and new and renewable- power generations, using the Input-Output Table from The Bank of Korea. The results of this analysis show that the new and renewable power generation has got the larger effects in production-inducing, value-added-inducing, employment-inducing, and supply-shortage scopes, while the smaller effect in price-pervasive scope than the thermal power generation. According to these results, the complex consideration should be taken into when the changes in power generation mix are tried. Especially, the political efforts to reduce the supply-shortage effect of new and renewable power and the price-pervasive effect of thermal power will be important.
In this study, in order to solve the problem of the program of calculating code input by experienced users in the power generation, the wide area energy network research group developed the local heating operation analysis program EntPLAN, which can be easily used by anyone, including scalability, with domestic technology. Therefore, the Commission intended to compare the heat sources, heat demand, and the results of operation of the combined heat plant (CHP) on the energy network through simulation with the EnetPLAN and the program A on the market. The results showed that the heat and power output on the energy network of the EnetPLAN and A programs were mostly similar in pattern in the simulation results of the heat supply and the operation method of the accumulator. This enabled the application of the simulation for the various operation modes of the cogeneration facilities existing on the energy network. It is expected that EntPLAN, which was developed with domestic technology, will be easily applied in the field in the future and will present efficient operation simulation results.
