  • Data filtering is an essential task for improving the energy efficiency of radiofrequency identification (RFID) networks. Among various energy-efficient approaches, clustering-based data filtering is considered to be the most effective solution because data from cluster members can be filtered at cluster heads before being sent to base stations. However, this approach quickly depletes the energy of cluster heads. Furthermore, most previous studies have assumed that readers are fixed and interrogate mobile tags in a workspace. However, there are several applications in which readers are mobile and interrogate fixed tags in a specific area. This article proposes a model for dynamic clustering-based data filtering (DCDF) in mobile RFID networks, where mobile readers are re-clustered periodically and the cluster head role is rotated among the members of each cluster. Simulation results show that DCDF is effective in terms of balancing energy consumption among readers and prolonging the lifetime of the mobile RFID networks.

  • This paper proposes how to reduce the amount of data transmitted in each sensor and cluster head in order to lengthen the lifetime of sensor network. This study proposes hierarchical filtering for reducing the sensor's energy dissipation. Hierarchical filtering is to divide sensor network by two tiers when filtering it. First tier performs filtering when transmitting the data from cluster member to cluster head, and second tier performs filtering when transmitting the data from cluster head to base station. This should increase the efficiency of filtering and decrease the inaccuracy of the data compared to the methods which enlarge the filter width to do more filtering.

  • This paper provides a method for speech detection. After first order FIR filtering on the speech signals, we applied the conventional method of endpoint detection which utilizes the energy as the criterion in separating signals from background noise. By FIR filtering, only the Fourier components with large values of [amplitude x frequency] become significant in energy profile. By applying this procedure to the 445-words database constructed from ETRI, we confirmed that the low-amplitude noise and/or the low-frequency noise are separated clearly from the speech signals, thereby enhancing the feasibility of ideal endpoint detections.

  • In this paper, we propose an adaptive filtering scheme of connection requests for the defense of malicious energy consumption attacks against wireless computing devices with limited energy budget. The energy consumption attack tries to consume the battery energy of a wireless device with repeated connection requests and shut down the wireless device by exhausting its energy budget. The proposed scheme blocks a connection request of the energy consumption attack in the middle, if the same connection request is repeated and its request result is failed continuously. In order to avoid the blocking of innocuous mistakes of normal users, the scheme gives another chance to allow connection request after a fixed blocking time. The scheme changes the blocking time adaptively by comparing the message arriving ate during non-blocking period and that during blocking period. Evaluation shows that the proposed defense scheme saves up to 94% energy consumption compared to the non-defense case.

  • In this paper, we propose a wavelet - based image noise reduction algorithm. We develop wavelet transform of existing Mallat Tree method. First, we propose a multiple filtering method. Maximizes the energy concentration characteristic of the wavelet transform considering the energy of each subband in the wavelet domain. We apply the proposed multiple filtering to the noise image. Finds energy subbands that can not be seen in normal images and removes them to remove noise.

  • Background: Dual-energy X-ray images (DEI) can distinguish or improve materials of interest in a two-dimensional radiographic image, by combining two images obtained from separate low and high energies. The concepts of DEI performance describing the performance of double-exposure DEI systems in the Fourier domain been previously introduced, however, the performance of double-exposure DEI itself in terms of various parameters, has not been reported. Materials and Methods: To investigate the DEI performance, signal-difference-to-noise ratio, modulation transfer function, noise power spectrum, and noise equivalent quanta were used. Low- and high-energy were 60 and 130 kVp with 0.01-0.09 mGy, respectively. The energy-separation filter material and its thicknesses were tin (Sn) and 0.0-1.0 mm, respectively. Noise-reduction (NR) filtering used the Gaussian-filter NR, median-filter NR, and anti-correlated NR. Results and Discussion: DEI performance was affected by Sn-filter thickness, weighting factor, and dose allocation. All NR filtering successfully reduced noise, when compared with the dual-energy (DE) images without any NR filtering. Conclusion: The results indicated the significance of investigating, and evaluating suitable DEI performance, for DE images in chest radiography applications. Additionally, all the NR filtering methods were effective at reducing noise in the resultant DE images.

  • Wiener filtering method was applied to the dual energy imaging procedure in digital radiography(D.R.). A linear scanning photodiode arrays with 1024 elements(0.6mm H 1.3mm pixel size) were used to obtain chest images in 0.7 sec. For high energy image acquisition, X-ray tube was set at 140KVp, 100mA with a rare-earth phosphor screen. Low energy image was obtained with X-ray tube setting at 70KVp, 150mA. These measured dual energy images are represented in the vector matrix notation as a linear discrete model including the additive random noise. Then, the object images are restored in the minimum mean square error sense using Wiener filtering method in the transformed domain. These restored high and low energy images are used for computation of the basis image decomposition. Then the basis images are linearly combined to produce bone or tissue selective images. Using this process, we could improve the signal to noise ratio characteristics in the material selective images.

  • The fabricated report attack will not only cause false alarms that waste real-world response efforts such as sending response teams to the event location, but also drains the finite amount of energy in a wireless sensor network. In this paper, we propose a probabilistic filtering method for sensor network security (PFSS) to deal with filtering for the fabricated report. On the basis of filtering scheme, PFSS combines cluster-based organization and probabilistic verification node assignment using distance of from cluster head to base station for energy efficiency and hot spot problem. Through both analysis and simulation, we demonstrate that PFSS could achieve efficient protection against fabricated report attack while maintaining a sufficiently high filtering power.

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of speech detection and phoneme segmentation. We investigate the effect of applying preemphasis FIR filtering on the speech signal before the usual speech detection that utilizes the energy profile for discriminating signals from background noise. By this procedure, only the speech section of low energy and frequency becomes distinct in energy profile. It is verified experimentally that the silence/speech boundary becomes sharper by applying the filtering compared to the conventional method. By applications of this procedure, phoneme segmentation is also found to be much facilitated.

  • Sensor Networks are often deployed in unattended environments, thus leaving these networks vulnerable to false data injection attacks in which an adversary injects forged reports into the network through compromised nodes. Such attacks by compromised sensors can cause not only false alarms but also the depletion of the finite amount of energy in a battery powered network. Ye et al. proposed the Statistical En-route Filtering scheme to overcome this threat. In statistical en-route filtering scheme, all the intermediate nodes perform verification as event reports created by center of stimulus node are forwarded to the base station. This paper applies a probabilistic verification method to the Static Statistical En-route Filtering for energy efficiency. It is expected that the farther from the base station an event source is, the higher energy efficiency is achieved.
