  • The use of supplemental damping to dissipate seismic energy is one of the most economical and effective ways to mitigate the effects of earthquakes on structures. Both displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices dissipate earthquake-induced energy effectively. Combining displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices for seismic mitigation of structures minimizes the shortcomings of individual dampers, and is the most economical solution for seismic mitigation. However, there are few publications related to the optimum distributions of combined devices in a multiple-bay frame building. In this paper, the effectiveness of a building consisting of multiple bags equipped with combined displacement-dependent and velocity-dependent devices is investigated. A four-story building with six bays was selected as an example to examine the efficiency of the proposed combination methods. The parametric study shows that appropriate arrangements of different kinds of devices make the devices more efficient and economical.

  • In this paper, fracture analysis of a continuously inhomogeneous arch structure with two longitudinal cracks is developed in terms of the time-dependent strain energy release rate. The arch under consideration exhibits non-linear creep behavior. The cross-section of the arch is a rectangle. The material is continuously inhomogeneous along the thickness of the cross-section. The arch is loaded by two bending moments applied at its end sections. The mechanical behavior of the material is described by using a non-linear stress-strain-time relationship. The two longitudinal cracks are located symmetrically with respect to the mid-span of the arch. Due to the symmetry, only half of the arch is considered. Time-dependent solutions to strain energy release rate are obtained by analyzing the balance of the energy. For verification, time-dependent solutions to the strain energy release rate are derived also by considering the time-dependent complementary strain energy. The evolution of the strain energy release rate with the time is analyzed. The effects of material inhomogeneity, locations of the two cracks along the thickness of the arch and the magnitude of the external loading on the time-dependent strain energy release rate are evaluated.

  • The time-dependent tracking inversion method is studied to extract the potential energy surface of the electronic excited state in the photodissociation of triatomic molecules. Based on the relay of the regularized inversion procedure and time-dependent wave packet propagation, the algorithm extracts the underlying potential energy surface piece by piece by tracking the time-dependent data, which can be synthesized from Raman excitation profiles. We have demonstrated the algorithm to extract the potential energy surface of electronic excited state for NO2 molecule where the wave packet split on a saddle-shaped surface. Finally, we describe the merits of the time-dependent tracking inversion method compared with the time-independent inversion method and discussed several extensions of the algorithm.

  • Delamination of multilayered inhomogeneous beam that exhibits non-linear relaxation behavior is analyzed in the present paper. The layers are inhomogeneous in the thickness direction. The dealamination crack is located symmetrically with respect to the mid-span. The relaxation is treated by applying a non-linear stress-straintime constitutive relation. The material properties which are involved in the constitutive relation are distributed continuously along the thickness direction of the layer. The delamination is analyzed by applying the J-integral approach. A time-dependent solution to the J-integral that accounts for the non-linear relaxation behavior is derived. The delamination is studied also in terms of the time-dependent strain energy release rate. The balance of the energy is analyzed in order to obtain a non-linear time-dependent solution to the strain energy release rate. The fact that the strain energy release rate is identical with the J-integral value proves the correctness of the non-linear solutions derived in the present paper. The variation of the J-integral value with time due to the non-linear relaxation behavior is evaluated by applying the solution derived.

  • Most of high energy cosmic rays (CRs) are thought to be produced by diffusive shock acceleration (DSA) at supernova remnants (SNRs) within the Galaxy. Fortunately, nonthermal emissions from CR protons and electrons can provide direct observational evidence for such a model and place strong constraints on the complex nonlinear plasma processes in DSA theory. In this study we calculate the energy spectra of CR protons and electrons in Type Ia SNRs, using time-dependent DSA simulations that incorporate phenomenological models for some wave-particle interactions. We demonstrate that the time-dependent evolution of the self-amplified magnetic fields, Alfv$\acute{e}$nic drift, and escape of the highest energy particles affect the energy spectra of accelerated protons and electrons, and so resulting nonthermal radiation spectrum. Especially, the spectral cutoffs in X-ray and ${\gamma}$-ray emission spectra are regulated by the evolution of the highest energy particles, which are injected at the early phase of SNRs. Thus detailed understandings of nonlinear wave-particle interactions and time-dependent DSA simulations of SNRs are crucial in testing the SNR hypothesis for the origin of Galactic cosmic rays.

  • Organic-inorganic halide perovskite single crystals undergo phase transition of being cubic, tetragonal, or orthorhombic depending on the temperature. We investigated the $CH_3NH_3PbBr_{3-x}I_x$ single crystals grown by the inverse temperature crystallization method with temperature-dependent UV-Vis absorption and photoluminescence. From the temperature-dependent absorption measurement, the optical band gap is extracted by derivation of absorption spectrum fitting and Tauc plot. In our results, $CH_3NH_3PbBr_{3-x}I_x$ single crystals show that an abrupt change in optical band gap, PL peak position and intensity appears around 120 K - 170 K regions, indicating the phase transition temperature.

  • The use of thermoluminescent dosimeters (TLDs) for beta dosimetry has been encumbered by the energy-dependent responses of TLDs to beta radiation. This energy-dependent response is due to the low penetrating ability of beta particles. Thus the determination of the beta dose imparted to an exposed TLD chip can be accurately determined only if the energy distribution of beta radiation is correctly accounted for. So precise beta dosimeter used TLD chips place under several aluminum filters of varying thicknesses and developed to correctly determine doses due to radiation fields where the beta energy distribution is unknown.

  • A mechanism of taurine transfer across the rat small intestine was elucidated by using the in situ recirculation perfusion or loop method. Taurine uptake was saturable, Km= 39.9 mM, and energy dependent, and required sodium. The close structural analogues, aminomethane sulfonic acid, .gamma.-amino-butyric acid, hypotaurine, and .betha.-alanine, reduced significantly taurine uptake when present in 10-fold excess. The .alpha.-amino acid, glycine, did not inhibit uptake. Hence, all of these findings lead to a conclusion that a carrier-mediated transport system for taurine exists in the small intestine.

  • An inverse problem is solved to determine the space-dependent thermal conductivity in one-dimensinoal time-dependent heat conduction medium with the data imposed and measured at the two end-points. The thermal conductivity is approximated as a linear combination of known functions with unknown coefficients and the unknowns are obtained by the governing and sensitivity equations using modified Newton-Raphson method. The estimated results are compared with exact thermal conductivities and it shows good agreements. This approach is expected to be used to estimate spatial composition of heat conduction medium.

  • This paper is focused on delamination analysis of a multilayered inhomogeneous viscoelastic beam subjected to linear creep under constant applied stress. The viscoelastic model that is used to treat the creep consists of consecutively connected units. Each unit consists of one spring and two dashpots. The number of units in the model is arbitrary. The modulus of elasticity of the spring in each unit changes with time. Besides, the modulii of elasticity and the coefficients of viscosity change continuously along the thickness, width and length in each layer since the material is continuously inhomogeneous in each layer of the beam. A time-dependent solution to the strain energy release rate for the delamination is derived. A time-dependent solution to the J-integral is derived too. A parametric analysis of the strain energy release rate is carried-out by applying the solution derived. The influence of various factors such as creep, material inhomogeneity, the change of the modulii of elasticity with time and the number of units in the viscoelastic model on the strain energy release rate are clarified.
