  • In this study, the effect of two types of aggregates (fly ash aggregate and shale aggregate) on the density, strength, and durability of preplaced lightweight aggregate concrete (PLWAC) was studied. The results showed that the 7 - 28 days strength of concrete prepared with fly ash aggregates (high water absorption rate) significantly increased, which could attribute to the long-term water release of fly ash aggregates by the refined pore structure. In contrast, the strength increase of concrete prepared with shale aggregates (low water absorption rate) is not apparent. Although PLWAC prepared with fly ash aggregates has a lower density and higher strength (56.8 MPa @ 1600 kg/m3), the chloride diffusion coefficient is relatively high, which could attribute to the diffusion paths established by connected porous aggregates and the negative over-curing effect. Compared to the control group, the partial replacement of fly ash aggregates (30%) with asphalt emulsion (20% solid content) coated aggregates can reduce the chloride diffusion coefficient of concrete by 53.6% while increasing the peak load obtained in a three-point bending test by 107.3%, fracture energy by 30.3% and characteristic length by 103.5%. The improvement in concrete performance could be attributed to the reduction in the water absorption rate of aggregates and increased energy absorption by polymer during crack propagation.

  • The carbon nano-structured materials could be applied to the fields of advanced fillers, templates, electrode materials, sensor, storage, and absorption materials. The polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based carbon nano-particles provide the remarkable properties of high specific surface area, large pore volume, chemical inertness, and good mechanical stability. In this study, well-defined carbon nano-particles were obtained through pyrolysis of polyacrylonitrile based particles. The precursor nano-particles were prepared by modified aqueous dispersion polymerization using hydrophilic poly(vinyl alcohol) in a water/ N,N-dimethylformamide mixture media. Synthesized precursor nanoparticles have relatively monodisperse particles ranging 80 ~ 250nm. Stable spherical particles are obtained without coagulum or secondary particles in our system. The characteristic of the carbon nanoparticles were investigated in terms of surface area, morphology, and size distribution.

  • This study developed and evaluated a shoe cushioning system to reduce impact force patterns during running. The shoe cushioning system is composed with a poly urethane pocket, which contains water and porous grains to absorb the force against the weight inside the pocket. Load-displacement curves for the shoe cushioning system were obtained from an instrumented testing machine and the results were compared with various pockets that have air, water or grains. Mechanical testings showed that the pocket with 5 g particles was the best for the shoe cushioning system. This founding will be helpful to designing the shoe.

  • The present study is devoted to investigate numerically the optical characteristics of multi-layer thin film structures such as $Si/SiO_2\;and\;Ge/Si/SiO_2$ by using the characteristics transmission matrix method. The reflectivity and the absorptivity rate for thin film structures are estimated for different incident angles of rays and various film thicknesses. In addition, the influence of wavelength on optical characteristics related to complex refractive index is examined. It is found that such wave-like characteristics are observed in predicting reflectivities and depends mainly on film thickness. Moreover, the present study predicts the film thickness for ignoring wave interference effects, and it also discusses the fundamental physics behind optical and energy absorption characteristics appearing in multi-layer thin film structures.

  • The laser patterning of sputter-deposited CoNdZr/Cu/CoNbZr multi-layered films had been tried using Nd:YAG laser. However generally it is very difficult to remove metal films because of their high reflectance of the laser on the surfaces. As a counterproposal for this problem authors for the first time tried to deposit energy-absorbing layers on the metal films and then irradiated the laser on the surfaces of energy-absorbing layers. Here the energy-absorbing layers consisted of laser energy-absorbing fine powders and binding polymers. Three kinds of powders for the energy-absorbing layers had been used to see the difference in the pattern formation with the degree of laser energy absorption. They were electrically conductive silver powders insulating BaTiO$_3$powder and semiconducting carbon powder. Remarkable difference in width of the formed pattern and the roughness of pattern edge were observed with the characteristic of the powder for the energy-absorbing layer. The pattern width using carbon paste was about three times larger than that using BaTiO$_3$paste. It was observed that the energy-absorbing layer with carbon was the most effective on this micro-patterning.

  • ZnO varistors have been widely used to protect power system and electronic system against overvoltages based on their excellent nonlinearity. In order to increase their protection capability, the fracture and protection technologies of arresters have to study according to their applications, namely ImA DC voltage, leakage currents, impulse residual voltages, withstanding capability to impulse surge, and energy absorption capability. ZnO varistors which have nonlinear current-voltage characteristic name a number of failure mechanism when ZnO elements absorb surge energies. Failure mode by thermal stress and Pin hole are among the most common failure mechanism at the high current surge current. In this study, the fracture mechaism of power arresters are introduced and protection technologies are researched. In particular the effect of thermal stress by surge currents to ZnO elements and methods against arc surge energy through withstand structure design of arrester are discussed.

  • Rubber is used extensively in many industries because of its large reversible elastic deformation, excellent damping and energy absorption characteristics, and wide availability. Therefore it becomes very important to evaluate fracture characteristics of rubber. Tearing energy and J-integral have been used as fracture parameters of rubber. The J-integral values for pure shear and single edge specimen are calculated by finite element analysis and compare with theoretical values. Finite element analysis is performed by ABAQUS.

  • Efficient copper removal from water was achieved by using surface modified silica spheres with 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane (MPTMS) using base catalyst. The surface modification of silica spheres was performed by hydrolysis and condensation reactions of the MPTMS. The characteristic infrared absorption peaks at 2929, 1454, and 1343 cm−1 represent the −CH2 stretching vibration, asymmetric deformation, and deformation, respectively. The absorption peaks at 2580 and 693 cm−1 corresponding the −SH stretching vibration and the C-S stretching vibration indicate the incorporation of MPTMS to the surface of silica spheres. Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) image of the surface modified silica sphere (SMSS) shows nano-particles of MPTMS on the surface of silica spheres. High concentration of copper solution (1000 ppm) was used to test the copper removal efficiency and uptake capacity. The FESEM image of SMSS treated with the copper solution shows large number of copper lumps on the surface of SMSS. The copper concentration drastically decreased with increasing the amount of SMSS. The residual copper concentrations were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The copper removal efficiency and uptake capacity with 1000 ppm of copper solution were 99.99 % and 125 mg/g, respectively.

  • Infrared absorption spectra of 9 bulk samples and 3 acid residues of meteorites were obtained in the mid-infrared region ($4000~400cm^{-1}$). From the know composition of meteorites studied, the possible absorption modes were investigated. Most bands of bulk samples occur in the region below $1200cm^{-1}$ and they are due to metallic oxides and silicates. The spectra of each group can be distinguished by its own characteristic bands. Acid residues show very distinct features from their bulk samples, and absorp-tion bands due to organic compounds are not evident in their spectra. Quantiative analyses for two carbonaceous (Allende CV3 and Murchison CM2) and one ordinary (Carraweena L3.9) chondrites were performed for the presence of fullerene ($C_{60}$) in the meteorites. We calculated the concentration of $C_{60}$ in the acid residues by curve-fitting the spectra with Gaussian functions. The upper limit of $C_{60}$ concentration in these meteorites appears to be less than an order of a few hundred ppm.

  • We are developing a sensitive gamma ray spectrometer based on superconducting transition edge sensors. The detector consists of a small piece of high purity Sn as an absorber and a Ti/Au bilayer as a temperature sensor. It is designed to measure the thermal signal caused by absorption of gamma rays. The mechanical support and the thermal contact between the absorber and the thermometer were made with Stycast epoxy. The bilayer was formed by e-beam evaporation and patterned by wet etching on top of a $SiN_X$ membrane. A sharp superconducting transition of the film was measured near 100 mK. When the film was biased to the edge of the transition, signals were observed due to single photon absorption emitted from an $^{241}Am$ source. The measured spectrum showed several characteristic peaks of the source including 59.5 keV gamma line. The full with at half maximum was about 900 eV for the 59.5 keV gamma line. The background was low enough to resolve low energy lines. Considerations to improve the energy resolution of the gamma ray spectrometer are also discussed.
