Radiation imaging systems consisting of a large number of channels greatly benefit from multiplexing methods to reduce the number of channels with minimizing the system complexity and development cost. In conventional pixelated radiation detector modules, such as anger logic, is used to reduce a large number of channels that transmit signals to a data acquisition system. However, these methods have limitations of electrical noise and distortion at the detector edge. To solve these problems, a multiplexing concept using a digital signal encoding technique based on a time delay method for signals from detectors was developed in this study. The digital encoding multiplexing (DEM) method was developed based on the time-over-threshold (ToT) method to provide more information including the activation time, position, and energy in one-bit line. This is the major advantage of the DEM method as compared with the traditional ToT method providing only energy information. The energy was measured and calibrated by the ToT method. The energy resolution and coincidence time resolution were observed as 16% and 2.4 ns, respectively, with DEM. The position was successfully distributed on each channel. This study demonstrated the feasibility that DEM was useful to reduce the number of detector channels.
Dual-energy X-ray imaging (DEI) techniques can provide X-ray images that a certain material is suppressed or emphasized by combining two X-ray images obtained from two different x-ray spectrum. In this paper, a single-shot DEI, which uses stacked two detectors (i.e., multilayer detector), is proposed to reduce the patient dose and increase throughput in angiography. The polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and aluminum (Al) were selected as two basis materials for material decomposition, and material-specific images are reconstructed as a vector combination of these two materials. We investigate the contrast and noise performance of material-decomposed images using iodine phantoms with various concentrations and diameters. The single-shot DEI shows comparable performances to the conventional dual-shot DEI. In particular, the single-shot DEI shows edge enhancement in material-decomposed images due to the different spatial-resolution characteristics of upper and lower detectors. This study could be useful for designing the multilayer detector including scintillators and energy-separation filter for angiography purposes.

Recently there are growing interests on the energy conservation and emission reduction. In the fields of architecture and civil engineering, the energy monitoring of structures is required to response the energy issues. In perspective of thermal monitoring, thermal images gains popularity for their rich visual information. With the rapid development of the drone platform, aerial thermal images acquired using drone can be used to monitor not only a part of structure, but wider coverage. In addition, the stereo photogrammetric process is expected to generate 3D point cloud with thermal information. However thermal images show very poor in resolution with narrow field of view that limit the use of drone-based thermal photogrammety. In the study, we aimed to generate 3D thermal point cloud using visible and thermal images. The visible images show high spatial resolution being able to generate precise and dense point clouds. Then we extract thermal information from thermal images to assign them onto the point clouds by precisely establishing photogrammetric collinearity between the point clouds and thermal images. From the experiment, we successfully generate dense 3D thermal point cloud showing 3D thermal distribution over the building structure.
In order to tackle global environmental problems such as destruction of the ozone layer or climatic changes due to atmospheric temperature increase, the acquisition of plentiful and precise data is necessary. Therefore, a means of conducting long-lasting high-resolution measurements over broad areas is required. A feasibility study has been made on a high altitude (20km), super-pressured helium-filled PLTA (Powered Ligher-than-Air) vehicle as an ideal platform for environmental observation. It has a long service life and carries a larger payload than an artificial satellite. This PLTA platform uses an electric propulsion system to maintain position in space against wind currents. The thruster is driven by solar power acquired from solar cells. For night use, solar energy is stored in regenerative fuel cells. This study focuses on energy balance and structural analysis of the hull and platform. The platform is capable of conducting high resolution remote sensing as well as having the capability to serve as a telecommunications relay. The platform could replace a number of ground-based telecommunications relay facilities, guaranteeing sufficient radio frequency intensity to secure good quality telecommunication transmittal. The altitude at which the platform resides has the lowest wind flow in the lower stratosphere, and permits viewing from the ground within a 1,000km range. Because this altitude is much lower than that required of an artificial satellite, the measuring resolution is a couple of thousand times higher than with artificial satellites. The platform can also be used to chase typhoons and observe them from their sources in tropical regions.

To investigate the underground structure of shallow water, Han-river near Yangsou-Ri, high resolution hydroacoustic measurements were carried out for the engineering design of railroad bridge. The acoustic source was a Boomer with an energy of 90 to 280J and in a frequency range up to about 16KHz. The reflected signals were received by using both traditional hydrophones(passive element) and a specially devised receiver unit(active element) mainly composed of piezofilms and preamplifier. They are connected to the "SUMMIT" data acquisition system(DMT-GeoTec company), where the sampling interval was set to 1/32㎳. The source position was continuously monitored by a precision DGPS system whose positioning accuracy was on the order of loom. For the quality control purposes, two different source-receiver geometries were taken. That is to say, the measurements were repeated along the profile everytime depending on the different source energy(175J, 280J), the receiving elements(passive, active) and two different source-receiver geometries. It was shown that the data resolution derived from a proper arrangement with the active hydrophone could be greatly enhanced and hence the corresponding profile section caused by the regular data processing system "FOCUS" accounted excellently for the underground formation below the shallow water.w the shallow water.

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) often employ asynchronous MAC scheduling, which allows each sensor node to wake up independently without synchronizing with its neighbor nodes. However, this asynchronous scheduling may not deal with collisions due to hidden terminals effectively. Although most of the existing asynchronous protocols exploit a random back-off technique to resolve collisions, the random back-off cannot secure a receiver from potentially repetitive collisions and may lead to a substantial increase in the packet latency. In this paper, we propose a new collision resolution algorithm called Transient Coordinator (TC) for asynchronous WSN MAC protocols. TC resolves a collision on demand by ordering senders' transmissions when a receiver detects a collision. To coordinate the transmission sequence both the receiver and the collided senders perform handshaking to collect the information and to derive a collision-free transmission sequence, which enables each sender to exclusively access the channel. According to the simulation results, our scheme can improve the average per-node throughput by up to 19.4% while it also reduces unnecessary energy consumption due to repetitive collisions by as much as 91.1% compared to the conventional asynchronous MAC protocols. This demonstrates that TC is more efficient in terms of performance, resource utilization, and energy compared to the random back-off scheme in dealing with collisions for asynchronous WSN MAC scheduling.
In general, an internal fire events probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) model is quantified by modifying the pre-existing internal event PSA model. Because many pieces of equipment or cables can be damaged by a fire, a single fire event can lead to multiple internal events PSA initiating events (IEs). Consequently, when the fire events PSA model is quantified, inappropriate minimal cut sets (MCSs), such as duplicate MCSs, may be generated. This paper shows that single quantification of a hypothetical single-top fire event PSA model may generate the following four types of inappropriate MCSs: duplicate MCSs, MCSs subsumed by other MCSs, nonsense MCSs, and MCSs with over-counted fire frequencies. Among the inappropriate MCSs, the nonsense MCSs should be addressed first because they can interfere with the right interpretation of the other MCSs and prevent the resolution of the issues related to the other inappropriate MCSs. In addition, we propose a resolution process for each of the issues caused by these inappropriate MCSs and suggest an overall procedure for resolving them. The results of this study will contribute to the understanding and resolution of the inappropriate MCSs that may appear in the quantification of fire events PSA models.

A neutral particle energy analyzer, which has the carbon stripping foil and the $90^{\circ}$ cylindrical electrostatic deflection plate, was designed and constructed for measuring of ion temperature in plasma. The energy calibration and energy resolution were studied in detail for a hydrogen ion at the $0.5{\sim}3.0\;keV$ energy using a duoplasmatron ion source. An energy of hydrogen ion to the deflection plate voltage at the peak ion count rate could be fitted by the expression $E_{o}(keV)$=3.83V(kV). The measured energy resolution, which was about 2 % at the energy of 3.0 keV and 9 % at the energy of 0.5keV, was better for the increased hydrogen ion energy. For the charge exchanged hydrogen atom due to the carbon stripping foil, the energy calibration, energy loss and resolution were measured to the $0.5{\sim}2.0{\mu}g/cm^{2}$ thickness of the carbon stripping foil. An energy of the charge exchanged hydrogen atom as a function of the deflection plate voltage and carbon foil thickness could be fitted by the expression $E_{o}(keV)=(0.53d+4.4){\cdot}V(kV)$. The energy loss was $0.23{\sim}0.89\;keV $ to the $0.5{\sim}2.0{\mu}g/cm^{2}$ carbon foil thickness and the $0.5{\sim}3.0\;keV$ energy of the incident neutral hydrogen atom, it could be fitted by the expression ${\Delta}E=(0.12d+0.27){\cdot}{E_{o}}^{1/2}(keV)$. The measured energy resolution for the neutral hydrogen atom, which was between 7 % and 35 % in this experiment region, was increased for the increasing neutral hydrogen atom energy and the decreasing carbon stripping foil thickness.
We investigate models for the IRAS LRS)Low Resolution Spectra) of OH/IR stars. OH/IR stars often show the silicate features at 9.7 ${mu}m$ and $18{mu}m$ in the spectra obtained by the IRAS LRS as well as remarkably red values in the IRAS photometric colors such as [60]-[25] and [25]-[12]. We compare the radiative transfer model results with observed spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the stars including IRAS PSC(Point Source Catalog), IRAS LRS and ground based observational data.

Background: A hand-held detector for an emergency response was developed for nuclide identification and to estimate the information of the ambient dose rate in the scene of an accident as well as the radioactivity of the contaminants. Materials and Methods: To achieve this, the most suitable sensor was first selected as a cadmium zinc telluride (CZT) semiconductor and the signal processing unit from a sensor and the signal discrimination and storage unit were successfully manufactured on a printed circuit board. Results and Discussion: The performance of the developed signal processing unit was then evaluated to have an energy resolution of about 14 keV at 662 keV. The system control unit was also designed to operate the CZT detector, monitor the detector, battery, and interface status, and check and transmit the measured results of the ambient dose rate and radioactivity. In addition, a collimator, which can control the inner radius, and the airborne dust sampler, which consists of an air filter and charcoal filter, were developed and mounted to the developed CZT detector for the quick and efficient response of a nuclear accident. Conclusion: The hand-held CZT detector was developed to make the in-situ gamma-ray spectrometry and its performance was checked to have a good energy resolution. In addition, the collimator and the airborne dust sampler were developed and mounted to the developed CZT detector for a quick and efficient response to a nuclear accident.
