  • This study investigates interlaminar fracture characteristics of Graphite/Epoxy composite (HFG Graphite/Epoxy) under mode I (opening mode), mode II (sliding mode) and mixed mode loading conditions. The effects on interlaminar fracture toughness due to different fiber orientations on the crack surface are also investigated. The antisymmetric test fixture proposed by M. Arcan is used for this test. Both critical stress intensity foctors and critical energy release rates were determined and several mixed mode fracture criteria were compared to the experimental data. Also fracture surfaces were investigaed to obtain informations on the fracture behaviors of Graphite/Epoxy composite by means of a scanning electron microscope(SEM).

  • The present study has been performed to investigate the thermal characteristics of under-ventilated compartment fire which is a typical fire condition in structures. A series of fire experiments was conducted to characterize the thermally driven flow in a 2/5 scale ISO 9705 fire compartment. Three different fuels were used in this test series, methane gas, heptane pool, and polystyrene pellets fire. In order to measure accurate temperature, double shield aspirated thermocouples reducing the effect of radiative energy exchange on temperature measurement were used in addition to bare bead thermocouples. The upper layer temperature for well ventilated fire was increased with increasing heat release rate, but it was slightly decreased for under-ventilated fire. The measured temperatures in the upper layer at the front sampling location were higher than at the rear. Thermal characteristics through the doorway were also analysed for a wide range of heat release rates. This study provides a comprehensive and quantitative assessment of fire behavior for under-ventilation condition of fire.

  • The onset of extreme fire behaviour in a mine drift with longitudinal ventilation was analysed. A fire in a mine drift with continuous fuel load, involving several separate fires may lead to flames tilted horizontally and filling up the entire cross section. This will lead to earlier ignition, higher fire growth rate, higher fire spread rate and a severe fire behaviour. The focus has been on what changes take place at the onset and signs of the impending phenomenon. It was found that the fire gas temperature at the ceiling level provided a poor indicator. At the downstream far-field region of the fire, the sudden temperature increase at the lowest levels of the cross section and the sudden increase in flow velocities would provide signs of extreme fire behaviour. The corresponding full-scale heat release rates of the experiments at the onset of extreme fire behaviour were found to be very high for mining applications but not necessarily for tunnel fires. The heat release rate threshold for a mine drift with smaller cross-sectional dimensions would decrease considerably, increasing the likelihood of occurrence. The distance between the fuel items will play an important role during the initiation of horizontal flames.

  • A simplified safety assessment is carried out on rock-cavern type disposal of LLW using the analytical repository source term (REPS) model. For reliable prediction of the leach rates for various radionuclides, degradation of concrete structures, corrosion rate of waste container, degree of corrosion on the container surface, and the characteristics of radionuclides are considered in the REPS model. The results of preliminary assessment show that Cs-137, Ni-63, and Sr-90 are dominant. For the parametric uncertainty and sensitivity analysis, Latin hypercube sampling technique and rank correlation technique are applied. The results of the potential public health impacts show that radiological dose to intruder in the worst case scenario will be negligible and that more attention should be given to near-field performance.

  • The activation products of aluminum and argon are key radionuclides for operational and environmental radiological safety during the normal operation of open-tank-in-pool type research reactors using aluminum-clad fuels. Their activities measured in the primary coolant and pool surface water of HANARO have been consistent. We estimated their sources from the measured activities and then compared these values with their production rates obtained by a core calculation. For each aluminum activation product, an equivalent aluminum thickness (EAT) in which its production rate is identical to its release rate into the coolant is determined. For the argon activation calculation, the saturated argon concentration in the water at the temperature of the pool surface is assumed. The EATs are 5680, 266 and 1.2 nm, respectively, for Na-24, Mg-27 and Al-28, which are much larger than the flight lengths of the respective recoil nuclides. These values coincide with the water solubility levels and with the half-lives. The EAT for Na-24 is similar to the average oxide layer thickness (OLT) of fuel cladding as well; hence, the majority of them in the oxide layer may be released to the coolant. However, while the average OLT clearly increases with the fuel burn-up during an operation cycle, its effect on the pool-top radiation is not distinguishable. The source of Ar-41 is in good agreement with the calculated reaction rate of Ar-40 dissolved in the coolant.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the internal dissolved organic carbon (DOC) loading from sediment in eutrophic shallow Lake Kasumigaura. Contents of water and organic carbon were about 80% and 6.3% with depth in the sediment, respectively. The highest DOC concentration in porewater (104 mg C/l) was observed in September suggesting that the porewater could play an important role as an internal loading of DOC. Results of DOC release experiments showed that the labile-DOC (L-DOC) release was not detected in the oxic condition, while refractory-DOC(R-DOC) release was detected. The L-DOC and R-DOC release rates in the anoxic codition ranged from 14.5${\sim}$ 48.6, 14.4 ${\sim}$27.3 mgC $m^{-2}$ $d^{-2}$, respectively. The current study showed that L-DOC released in the oxic condition was rapidly utilized by aerobic bacteria, in contrast, L-DOC and R-DOC released in anoxic codition were slowly utilized by anaerobic bacteria. These results suggested that L-DOC and R-DOC were closely related to sediment release and most of the R-DOC released could be an important source of DOC in eutrophic lakes during summer. Therefore, R-DOC pool should be added as one of the important energy source for microbial-based aquatic food webs in eutrophic lakes.

  • To determine the pure bond strength between substrate and its overlayed concrete material, a direct pull-off test method was introduced by using a bi-material cylinder with which a penny-shaped crack was mountained at its interface. First, to evaluate the stress magnification or concentration at the interface, the energy release rates of a penny-shaped interface crack in remote tension loading on a bi-material cylinder were determined in terms of different modulus ratios and undonded area ratios(crack ratios) using a commercial finite element program. Then the energy release rates were calibrated as non-dimensional values in consideration of structural dimensions and applied forces. And to evaluate whether this new pull-off test method gives sound test results, three different sizes of unbended area ratios were incorporated along their interface in bi-material cylinders(sulphur polymer concrete + old concrete). Test results showed that all specimens were broken off at their interfaces as intended. Also the FEM analyses and test results indicated that a bi-material specimen with unbended area ratio of 0.4$\sim$0.6 is suitable for best accurate testing.

  • Many researchers have studied woven fabric carbon-fiber-reinforced composite (CFRP) materials but the study of fatigue crack propagation in composites has been insufficient. It has known that the crack propagation behavior differs depending on the load and the fiber direction. In this study, the fatigue crack propagation along two different fiber array directions ($0^{\circ}$, $45^{\circ}$) in plain woven CFRP composite was investigated. Fatigue crack propagation tests were conducted on the woven CFRP composite under a sinusoidal waveform load with stress ratios of 0.1 at a frequency of 10 Hz. Once the results of the tests were obtained, fatigue crack propagation rates (da/dN) were plotted against the energy release rate amplitude (${\Delta}G$), and it was observed that either mode I crack propagation or mixed mode crack propagation occurs depending on the fiber array direction.

  • The mixed mode problem (I and II) of a peny-shaped interface cracks in remote tension loading on a bi-material cylinder is studied using finite element method. The energy release rates for the tip of the crack in the interface were calibrated for several different moduli combinations and crack ratios using the modified crack closure integral technique and J-integral method, with numerical results obtained from a commercial finite element program. Numerical results show that non-dimensional value of$\sqrt{G_{II}E^*}/\sqrt[p]{\pi a}$ increases as the crack size or moduli ratio increases. Meanwhile, non-dimensional value of$\sqrt{G_{I}E^*}/\sqrt[p]{\pi a}$ decreases as the moduli ratio increases, but above the moduli ratio of 3 its value decreases then increases again as the crack size increases. Reliability of the numerical analysis in this study was acquired with comparison to an analytical solution for the peny-shaped interface crack in an infinite medium.

  • Bacteriophage T7 gp4A' is a ring-shaped hexameric DNA helicase that catalyzes duplex DNA unwinding using dTTP hydrolysis as an energy source. To investigate the effect of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) on the kinetic pathway of dTTP hydrolysis by the T7 DNA helicase complexed with ssDNA, we have first determined optimal concentration of long circular M13 single-stranded DNA and pre-incubation time in the absence of $Mg^{2+}$ which is necessary for the helicase-ssDNA complex formation. Steady state dTTP hydrolysis in the absence of $Mg^{2+}$ by the helicase-ssDNA complex provided $k_{cat}$ of $8.5\;{\times}\;10^{-3}\;sec^{-1}$. Pre-steady state kinetics of the dTTP hydrolysis by the pre-assembled hexameric helicase was monitored by using the rapid chemical quench-flow technique both in the presence and absence of M13 ssDNA. Pre-steady state dTTP hydrolysis showed distinct burst kinetics in both cases, indicating that product release step is slower than dTTP hydrolysis step. Pre-steady state burst rates were similar both in the presence and absence of ssDNA, while steady state dTTP hydrolysis rate in the presence of ssDNA was much faster than in the absence of ssDNA. These results suggest that single-stranded DNA stimulates dTTP hydrolysis reaction by T7 helicase by enhancing the rate of product release step.
