  • Neural networks (NNs) are extensively used in applications requiring signal classification and regression analysis. In this paper, a NN based threshold selection algorithm for 60 GHz millimeter wave (MMW) time of arrival (TOA) estimation using an energy detector (ED) is proposed which is based on the skewness, kurtosis, and curl of the received energy block values. The best normalized threshold for a given signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is determined, and the influence of the integration period and channel on the performance is investigated. Results are presented which show that the proposed NN based algorithm provides superior precision and better robustness than other ED based algorithms over a wide range of SNR values. Further, it is independent of the integration period and channel model.

  • Due to fossil fuel depletion and environmental pollution, H2 production from organic waste has received an increased attention. In this study, we present an integrated process for the H2 production from biogas and evaluate the economic feasibility and sustainability via rigorous techno-economic analysis (TEA) and life-cycle assessment (LCA). Through the TEA, we determine the minimum H2 selling price using discounted cash flow analysis and investigate the main cost drivers. The environmental impact of the proposed process is quantified via LCA.

  • In this article, we introduce a finite difference method for solving the Navier-Stokes equations in rectangular domains. The method is proved to be energy stable and shown to be second-order accurate in several benchmark problems. Due to the guaranteed stability and the second order accuracy, the method can be a reliable tool in real-time simulations and physics-based animations with very dynamic fluid motion. We first discuss a simple convection equation, on which many standard explicit methods fail to be energy stable. Our method is an implicit Runge-Kutta method that preserves the energy for inviscid fluid and does not increase the energy for viscous fluid. Integration-by-parts in space is essential to achieve the energy stability, and we could achieve the integration-by-parts in discrete level by using the Marker-And-Cell configuration and central finite differences. The method, which is implicit and second-order accurate, extends our previous method [1] that was explicit and first-order accurate. It satisfies the energy stability and assumes rectangular domains. We acknowledge that the assumption on domains is restrictive, but the method is one of the few methods that are fully stable and second-order accurate.

  • The prediction of the inelastic behavior of the structure is an essential part of reliability assessment procedure, because most of the failures are induced by the inelastic deformation, such as creep and plastic deformation. During decades, there has been much progress in understanding of the inelastic behavior of the materials and a lot of inelastic constitutive equations have been developed. These equations consist of the definition of inelastic strain and the evolution of the state variables introduced to quantify the irreversible processes occurred in the material. With respect to the definition of the inelastic strain, the inelastic constitutive models can be categorized into elastoplastic model, unified viscoplastic model and separated viscoplastic model and the different integration methods have been applied to each category. In the present investigation, the generalized integration method applicable for various types of constitutive equations is developed and implemented into ABAQUS by means of UMAT subroutine. The solution of the non-linear system of algebraic equations arising from time discretization with the generalized midpoint rule is determined using line-search technique in combination with Newton method. The strategy to control the time increment for the improvement of the accuracy of the numerical integration is proposed. Several numerical examples are considered to demonstrate the efficiency and applicability of the present method. • S&T policy has been traditionally regarded as a sector policy; however, it is now evolving into an infrastructure innovation policy that forms the foundation of diverse types of policies. Simultaneously, environmental and energy policies formerly considered as sector policies are now being expanded and integrated into a higher level policy for sustainable development. With these changes underway, the importance of policy integration has increased. Efforts are being made to minimize contradictions between environmental, social, and innovation policies that emphasize proactive linkage among policies or place the highest priority on environmental policy following the theory of Environmental Policy Integration (EPI). Confronted with these policy changes, the Lee Myung-bak government announced "Low-Carbon Green Growth" in 2008 as national agenda for development that focus attention on environmental and energy issues. Economic policy and environmental policy have been traditionally seen in a conflicting relationship with different paths of policy development. However, the administration of President Lee is now emphasizing the synergy effects between the environment and economic growth with the concept of green growth. The green growth policy of the Korean government has great significance as it has built a momentum for incorporating social goals such as environmental values or sustainable development into economic growth-oriented policies; however, there remain many challenges due to the legacy of the development period that has dominated Korean society. The Korean government says it reflects "EPI" or "environmentalism" in policy goals; however, in reality it prioritizes development over the environment.

  • Because of the limited fossil resources and the need to avoid emissions and toxic waste the future energy supply will be based on a large portion of renewable energies: wind-, solar-, biomass- and geothermal energy. Focus is on the utilization of wind energy coming from onshore- and offshore-sites. Generating electricity from wind is state of the art and feeding large amounts of wind power into the electrical grid will create some additional problems. Suggestions concerning energy storage will be made and the problem of power quality is discussed.

  • Steel structures with added viscoelastic dampers are analysed to investigat their behavior under earthquake excitation. The direct integration method, which produces exact solution for the non-proportional or non-classical damping system, is used throughout the analysis. The results from modal strain energy method are also provided for comparison. Then a new analytical a, pp.oach, based on the rigid floor diaphragm assumption and matrix condensation technique, is introduced, and the results are compared with those obtained from direct integration method and modal strain energy method. The well known phenomenon, that the effectiveness of the viscoelastic dampers depends greatly on the location of the dampers, is once again confirmed in the analysis. It is also found that the modal strain energy method generaly underestimates the responses obtained from the direct integration method, especially when the dampers are placed in only a part of the building. The proposed method turns out to be very efficient with considerable saving in computation this and reasonably accurate considering the reduced degrees of freedom.

  • In this paper, the integration issue, such as an air-side integration design between the gas turbine and air separation unit, is described and analyzed by the exergy and energy balance of the combined-cycle power block in an IGCC power plant. The results showed that the net power of the system was almost same, but that of the gas turbine was decreased as the integration degree increased. The highest exergy loss was occurred in the combustor of gas turbine, which was affected by the chemical reaction, heat conduction, mass diffusion, and viscous dissipation.
