  • It is necessary to estimate the regression coefficients in order to predict the monthly mean daily global radiation on a horizontal surface. Therefore many different equations have proposed to evaluate them for certain areas. In this work a new correlation has been made to predict the solar radiation for any area over Korea by estimating the regression coefficients taking into account latitude, percentage of possible sunshine, and cloud cover. Particularly, the single linear equation proposed by Page & Garg shows reliable results for estimating the global radiation with average deviation of -1 to 3% from the measured values.

  • The research has increased the role of physical activity in promoting health and preventing chronic disease. Estimating algorithm of physical activity energy expenditure was implemented by using a tri-axial accelerometer motion detector of the SVM(Signal Vector Magnitude) of 3-axis(x, y, z). COUNT method has been proven through experiments of validity Freedson, Hendelman, Leenders, Yngve was implemented by applying the SVM method. A total of 10 participants(5 males and 5 females aged between 20 and 30 years). The activity protocol consisted of three types on treadmill; participants performed three treadmill activity at three speeds(3, 5, 8 km/h). These activities were repeated four weeks. Customized estimating algorithm for energy expenditure of physical activities were implemented with COUNT and SVM correlation between the data.

  • It is necessary to estimate enpirical constants in order to predict the monthly mean daily global radiation on a horizontal surface in the developing areas for alternative energy. Therefore many different equations have propoed to evaluate them for certain areas. In this work a new corrlation has been made to predict the solar radiation for any areas over Korea by cululating the regression models taking into account latitude, percentage of possible sunshine, and cloud cover. From the results, the single linear equation proposed by using percentage of possible sunshine method shows reliable results for estimating the global rdiation with average annual deviation of -4 to +2% from measured values.

  • In this paper, I would like to propose a dividing method by estimating the inflection points and the average magnitude energy in speech signals. The method proposed in this paper gave not only a satisfactory solution for the problems on dividing method by zero-crossing rate, but could estimate the feature of the transient period after dividing the starting point and transient period in speech signals before steady state. In the results of the experiment carried out with monosyllabic speech, it was found that even through speech samples indicated in D.C. level, the staring and ending point of the speech signals were exactly divided by the method. In addition to the results, I could compare with the features, such as the length of transient period, the short term energy, the frequency characteristics, in each speech signal.

  • Wind speed is the most important parameter in the design and study of wind energy conversion systems. The weibull distribution is commonly used for wind energy analysis as it can represent the wind variations with an acceptable level of accuracy. In this study, the wind data for 11 cities in Iran have been analysed over a period of one year. The Goodness of fit test is used for testing data fit to weibull distribution. The results show that this data fit to weibull function very well. The scale and shape factors are two parameters of the weibull distribution that depend on the area under study. The kinds of numerical methods commonly used for estimating weibull parameters are reviewed. Their performance for the cities under study was compared according to root mean square and wind energy errors. The result of the study reveals the empirical, modified maximum likelihood estimate of wind speed with minimum error. Also, that the moment and modified maximum likelihood are the best methods for estimating the energy production of wind turbines.

  • This paper presents a generalized fuel choice model in which restrictive constraints on cross-price coefficients as Baughman-Joskow-FEA Logit Model need not be imposed, but all demand elasticities are uniquely determined. The model is applied to estimating aggregate energy demand and fuel choices for the residential and commercial sector. The structural equations are estimated by a generalized least squares procedure using national-level EPB, KDI, BK, KRIS, MOER data for 1965 and 1980, and other related reports. The econometric results support the argument that “third-price” and “fourth-price” coefficients should not be constrained in estimating relative market share models. Furthermore, by using this fuel choice model, it has forecasted energy demands by fuel sources in, the residential and commercial sector until 1991. The results are turned out good estimates to compare with existing demands forecasted from other institutes.

  • We have developed a practical method for estimating high-energy x-ray spectra using measured attenuation curves. This method is based on the iterative perturbation technique proposed by Waggener et al. The principle is to minimize the difference between the measured and calculated transmission curves. The experimental study was made using 4 MV, 10 MV, and 15 MV x-ray beams. It has been found that the spectrum varies strongly with the off-axis distance.

  • This paper is concerned with estimating the mass of a loose part in the steam generator of a nuclear power plant. Although there is the basic principle known as “Hertz Theory”for estimating mass and energy of a spherical part impacted on an infinite flat plate, the theory is not directly applicable because real plants do not comply with the underlying ideal assumptions. (Say, the steam generator is of a cylindrical and hemisphere shape.) In this work, a practical method is developed based on the basic theory and considering amplitude and energy attenuation effects. Actually, the impact waves propagating along the plate to the sensor locations become significantly different in shape and frequency spectrum from the original waveform due to the plate and surrounding conditions, distance attenuation and damping loss. To show the validity of the present mass estimation algorithm, it has been applied to the mock-up impact test data and also to real plant data. The results show better performance comparing to the conventional Hertz schemes.

  • Radiation hardening is a multiscale phenomenon involving various processes over a wide range of time and length. We present a multiscale model for estimating the amount of radiation hardening in pressure vessel steel in the environment of a light water reactor. The model comprises two main parts: molecular dynamics (MD) simulation and a point defect cluster (PDC) model. The MD simulation was used to investigate the primary damage caused by displacement cascades. The PDC model mathematically formulates interactions between point defects and their clusters, which explains the evolution of microstructures. We then used a dislocation barrier model to calculate the hardening due to the PDCs. The key input for this multiscale model is a neutron spectrum at the inner surface of reactor pressure vessel steel of the Younggwang Nuclear Power Plant No.5. A combined calculation from the MD simulation and the PDC model provides a convenient tool for estimating the amount of radiation hardening.

  • This paper defines the probability models for determining the disparity map given stereo images and derives the methods for solving the problem, which is proven to be equivalent to an energy-based stereo matching. Under the assumptions the difference between the pixel on the left image and the corresponding pixel on the right image and the difference between the disparities of the neighboring pixels are exponentially distributed, a recursive approach for estimating the MRF regularizing parameter is proposed. Usually energy-based stereo matching methods are so sensitive to the parameter that it should be carefully determined. The proposed method alternates between estimating the parameter with the intermediate disparity map and estimating the disparity map with the estimated parameter, after computing it with random initial parameter. It is shown that the parameter estimated by the proposed method converges to the optimum and its performance can be improved significantly by adjusting the parameter and modifying the energy term.
