  • This study is intended to examine the various kinds of emptiness that are shown in the empty spaces created by Hyo-Sang Seung and Louis I. Kahn. Architecture creates the usefulness of a certain space thanks to its emptiness. The word, 'Emptiness' has the following meanings, 'non-fulfillment', 'non-existence', 'emptiness', 'blankness', 'non-visibility' and 'non-limitation', etc. Such concepts of emptiness can be broadly divided into 'ideological emptiness', 'aesthetic' and 'architectural spatial'. Comparisons regarding such concepts of emptiness as they are expressed in the architectural spaces created by Hyo-sang Seung and Louis I. Kahn shall be identified in this study. Hyo-sang Seung tried to leave numerous open possibilities which can contain everything into a certain space since 'emptiness' is not being used at this moment. Louis I. Kahn tried to contain into a space the essence and silence of that space before something that exists is created. The 'emptiness' created by Hyo-sang Seung and Louis I. Kahn is a specific space which can contain more kinds of non-visible spaces than some visible ones. Thus, such spaces may contain various potentials which are possible because they are empty, because of changes in nature and time, and because of silence and intentions going beyond an artist's original intent.

  • This study examined the factors for feelings of emptiness on Facebook use, and how these feelings are related to the user's personal attributes and the addiction to Facebook usage. For analysis, the factors for feelings of emptiness on Facebook use among college students were measured and a questionnaire was developed. After analysis, 3 factors were identified: 'isolation and loneliness', 'self-regulation disorder', and 'unreality'. Then, variables influencing the feelings of emptiness were identified. Among big 5 personalities, neuroticism, agreeableness, and openness to experience were related to the factors for feelings of emptiness. The study also found that motivations such as 'self-disclosure' and 'social pressure from others' tended to enhance the feelings of emptiness. Finally, the study examined the relationship between feelings of emptiness on Facebook use and the addiction to it. Factors of 'isolation and loneliness' and 'unreality' revealed more addiction tendency on Facebook.

  • This study aims at the evaluation of the stationary distribution and the emptiness passage time for the effectiveness of water utility in the Keumgang estuary reservoir by two-step transition model. It was taken discrete Markovian correlated inflows for the joint probability of inflows and storage, and was used binomial distribution for inflows distribution. As the results, it was decreased from 0.952 to 0.904 the emptiness probability of the reservoir stationary distribution during 1952-1980, and from 0.900 to 0.829 during 1981-1989, and the average emptiness passage time was increased from 23 days to 37 days during 1952-1980, and from 29 days to 61 days during 1981-1989 at low state of storage. From this, it is found that the emptiness passage time is varied with the increase of the inflows auto-correlation coefficient in the Keumgang estuary reservoir. Therefore, it is understood that auto-correlation coefficient must be taken into consideration for the evaluation of water utility in a small reservoir at drought time.

  • The purpose of this study was to build a substantive theory about the experience of the family whose child has died of cancer The qualitative re-search method used was grounded theory. The interviewees were 17 mothers who had cared for a child who had died of cancer Traditionally in Korea, mothers are the care givers in the family and are considered sensitive to the family's thoughts, feelings. The data were collected through in-depth interviews by the investigator over a period of nine months. The data were analyzed simultaniously by a constant comparative method in which new data are continuously coded into categories and properties according to Strauss and Corbin's methodology. The 16 concepts which were found as a result of analyzing the grounded data were, -left over time, the empty place, meaninglessness, inner sadness, situational sadness, heartache, physical pain, guilt, resentment, regret, support / stigmatization, finding meaning in the death, changing attitudes about life and living, changing attitudes about health, changing religious practice and changing family relations. Five categories emerged from the analysis. They were emptiness, consisting of left over time, the empty place and meaninglessness ; sadness, consisting of inner sadness and situational sadness ; pain, consisting of heartache and physical pain ; bitterness, consisting of guilt, resentment, regret, sup-port / stigmatization and finding meaning in the death : and transition, consisiting of changing attitudes about life and living, changing attitudes about health, changing religious practice and changing family relations. These categories were synthesized into the core concept, -the process of filling the empty space. The core phenomenon was emptiness. Emptiness varied with the passing of time, was perceived differently according to support / stigmatization and finding meaning in the death, was followed by sad-ness, pain, and bitterness, and finally resulted in changes in attitudes about life and living and about health, and in changes in religious practice and family relations. The process of filling the empty space proceeded by ① accepting realty, ② searching for the reason for the child's death, ③ controlling the bitter feelings, ④ reconstructing the relationships ameng death, illness and health and ⑤ filling the emptiness by resolving causes of child's death, adopting, having another child or with work. Six hypotheses were derived from the analysis. ① The longer the bereavement, the mere the empty space becomes filled. ② The longer the hospitalization, the more sup-port the family needs. ③ The more the sadness, pain and bitterness are expressed, the mere positive changes emerge. ④ Family support faciliates the process of filling the empty space. ⑤ Higher family cohesiveness faciliates the process of filling the empty space. ⑥ The greater the variety of reasons attributed to the child's death, the greater the variety of patterns of change. Four propositions related to emptiness and bitter-ness were developed. ① When the sense of emptiness is great and bitterness is manifested by severe feelings of guilt and resentment, the longer the process of fill-ing the empty space. ② When the sense of emptiness is great and the family is highly motivated to get rid of the bitterness, the shorter the process of filling the empty space. ③ When the sense of emptiness is less and bitter-ness is manifested by severe feelings of guilt and resentment, the process of filling the empty space is delayed. ④ When the sense of emptiness is less and the family is highly motivated to get rid of the bitterness, the process of filling the empty space goes on to completion. Through this substantive theory, nurses under-stand the importance of emptiness and bitterness in helping the family that has lost a child through cancer fill the empty space. Further research to build substantive theories to explain other losses may con-tribute to a formal theory of how family health is restored after human tragedies are experienced.

  • This study aims to look into Daesoon Thought from the perspective of Neo-Confucianism. Numinous emptiness (虛靈), wise-awakening (知覺), and divine beings (神明) in the Scripture of the Black Tortoise (Hyeonmu-gyeong) are often mentioned as characteristics of the mind in Neo-Confucianism. Accordingly, this research take up the 'Che-Yong (substance, 體 and function, 用)' of mind by classifying numinous emptiness as Origin-Substance (本體), wise-awaking as function, and divine beings as subjects. Numinous emptiness enables an individual to have been born with Li (理) of Taegeuk (太極), which is a mandate from Heaven and the nature of humanity; whereas one embodies spirit and brightness mind based on Origin-Substance. This numinous emptiness of mind is precisely the mind-spirit. Wise-awakening is a function of mind, which actually awakens numinous emptiness (理) and objects (氣). The mind which realizes the Li of Taegeuk as numinous emptiness is conscientiousness and can be taken as a Dao-Mind. The mind which desires objects refers to the Human Mind or a selfish motive. Such propensity in terms of wise-awakening determines the state of mind. One should reach the state of a quiet mind by wisely awakening through the scripture. Divine beings correspond to metaphysical Origin-Substance and physical objects respectively. In addition, they comprehend all and preside over wise-awakening as subjects. The subject recognizes wise-awakening and responds to it. Mind is a path traveled upon by divine beings as they enter and exit. In this regard, the human mind refers to the organ used by immanent deities, which accumulates physical senses, innermost mental processes, and awakened activities. Furthermore, Transcendental deities also come in and out through mental correspondence, leading to changes in one's physical constitution or personality. This paper focuses on the mind perceived in Daesoon Thought as follows: first, besides the existing spiritual perspective, the research takes a view on surveying numinous emptiness, wise-awakening, and divine beings in Neo-Confucianism. Secondly, the Che-Yong of mind is closely looked into by means of innate numinous emptiness as Che and wise-awakening as Yong. Lastly, the essence, energy, and divinity as well as spiritual soul and physical soul are mentioned according to the concept of an immanent deity. The paper also clarifies the fact that divine beings preside over the mind as subjects.

  • Objective: To explore the meaning of 虛in Shanghanlun through two cases. Methods: We analyzed the original form of 虛and the contexts in Shanghanlun. Concurrently, we report two clinical cases treated with Chijasi-tang according to the newly deduced definition of 虛. Results: 虛is composed of 丘and 虍, which means a tiger on a large hill. Here, the meaning of "empty"was derived. In both cases, sleep disorders and heart stuffiness were the chief complaints, which were confirmed to occur under 虛's circumstances. Therefore, Chijasi-tang was administered to two patients with a feeling of emptiness as a pathogenic factor, and improvements were confirmed in both cases. Conclusions: In 15 provisions of Shanghanlun, 虛is defined as "a feeling of emptiness"instead of of "deficient,"which was widely used previously, and appears clinically as "emptiness after being hurt by someone."This definition was applicable in both cases.Further study of the other characters is needed because the previously used meaning may be different in the 15-character provisions of the Shanghanlun.

  • As dating violence is recently rising as one of the most serious social issues, the study examined the effect of internalized shame on controlling behavior manifested in dating relationship. We explored the mediation effect of self-absorption, indicating maladaptive self-focused attention, between each of the four sub-factors of internalized shame(inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake) and controlling behavior. Based on the data obtained from 200 single people in their 20-30s, it was revealed that the internalized shame, the self-absorption, and the controlling behavior in dating relationships were all positively correlated. The mediation effect of self-absorption was significant between the sub-factors of internalized shame (inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake) and controlling behavior. In other words, the higher the inadequacy, emptiness, self punishment, and fear of mistake, the bigger the self-absorption, and the more frequent the controlling behavior in dating relationship.

  • As the rural economy is worsening day by day due to rapidly declined population and increase of aging generation, the emptiness in the rural areas are becoming increasingly intensifying. In particular, urban runoff of young adults and middle-aged people and the decrease in birth rate have shrunk the rural population reaching to raise concerns on the stage of emptiness. On the other hand, people in the urban areas with rapid industrialization and overcrowding call for the variety of housing needs moving away from monolithic housing types. In order to solve problems of rural communities such as emptied out rural society as well as the problems of urban communities in overcrowdings, environment, and housing, it is required to develop an urban-countryside village complex pursuing advantages of the rural environment and convenience of urban living. Of this time, there needs a change in rural development policies which can make the urban residents migrate and settle in the rural areas as they are naturally embracing the rural life according to the social background and demand.
