  • Main disposal technology for industrial wasites in Korea has been landfilling, however, this is encountering serious problems such as the lack of landfill sites and objections of residents. Incineration, therefore, has become a final solution for this dilema. Various kinds of air pollutants generation are possible because of the variety of types and compositions of wastes generated in industry. In this paper, air pollutants produced while incinerating hazardous industrial wastes are discussed and some control technologies are surveryed with the purpose of optimal design of incinerators and emission reduction. From this initial stage of incinerator utilization, low-emission type should be developed and applied and intensive research on pollutant generation due to waste incineration and advanced control technologies should be also performed.

  • Information on the lists of pollutants from industrial wastewater discharge are essential not only to specify the key pollutants to be managed in permission process but to design the treatment facilities by the dischargers. In this study, wastewater quality analysis was conducted for three industrial categories including the specified hazardous water pollutants. The general description of the wastewater occurrence, major sources, treatment facilities are also investigated to obtain integrated database on the pollutant inventories for the industrial categories. In addition Based on the analysis of raw wastewater and final effluent, the detected pollutant items are confirmed by analyzing their presence in the raw or supplement materials, the potential of formation as byproducts, and the possibility of inclusion as impurities. The three industrial categories include petrochemical basic compounds, basic organic compounds, and thermal power generation. The water pollutants emitted from petrochemical basic compound manufacturing facilities are 31 items including 16 specified hazardous water pollutants. Basic organic compound manufacturing facilities discharge 30 kinds of pollutants including 14 specified hazardous water pollutants. Thermal power generation facilities emit 20 pollutants, 8 specified hazardous water pollutants among them. These substances were decided as emission inventories of water pollutants finally through the probability evaluation. The compounds detected for each categories are screened through investigation on the possible causes of their occurrence and confirmed as the final water pollutant inventories.

  • In this study, the HAPs(Harzard Air Pollutants) emission factor level of Starex and Grand Carnival was tested using PEMS (Portable Emissions Measurement System) on real road driving. As a result of RDE (Real Driving Emission test), the overall vehicle speed pattern showed similar characteristics. The real-road driving test at constant speed revealed emission factor is inversely proportional relationship to constant speed. Results of accelerating with speed limit on the real-road were shown as followings; Uran (less than 45 km/h)>Rural (<45 km/h, less than 80 km/h)>Motorway (>80 km/h). Moreover, the sudden acceleration and deceleration in driving at high speed was the increasing factor to the HAPs emission factor. This tendency is considered to be influenced by the operating environment on real roads.

  • Urban air pollution has been gradually increasing by the increase of population and vehicles recently. There are shown larger effects of air pollution in Incheon city which has more than 2 million people and has heavy holding amounts ratio of transportation vehicles as compared with other cities. However, it is very difficult to predict the air quality condition of their moving pollutants. Therefore, in this study air pollution measuring model was designed to estimate the air pollution level by line sources(transprtation vehicles ) of air pollutants and to detect the $NO_x$ emission amounts in ordinary times, and it became clear that it is functionally operative.

  • The increasing consumption of pseudo-petroleum products (PPP) has been disturbing the national petroleum market. The use of PPP lead to tax evasion, disturbance of sound trading principles, component corrosion of cars, and explosion accident. Also, PPP have emitted hazardous air pollutants (HAP) including the carcinogenic aromatic hydrocarbons, PAHs and aldehydes more than regular-petroleum products. It thus has potentials to cause many environmental and health care problems. In this study, benzene, toluene and xylene emissions from road transport vehicles due to the use of pseudo-gasoline are estimated for the year 2008. The results of our study provide emission estimates of benzene, toluene and xylene for the year as 405, 1,711, 717 tonne/yr, respectively for regular-gasoline. BTX emissions are calculated as 452~515, 1,882~2,264 and 732~752 tonne/yr when the amount of pseudo-gasoline is estimated to account for 6~13% for regular-gasoline consumption. BTX emissions increased as much as 12~27, 10~32, 2~5% by using pseudo-gasoline. It is found that the pseudo-gasoline should be the key component to produce HAP in urban area.

  • In this paper, air pollutant tracing models using perceptron neural network(PNN) and non-negative least square(NNLS) are proposed. When the measured values of the air pollution and the contribution concentration of each source by chemical transport modeling are given, they estimate and trace the amount of the air pollutants emission from each source. Two kinds of emissions data are used in the experiments : CH4 and N2O of Geumgo-dong landfill greenhouse gas, and PM10 of 17 areas in Northeast Asia and eight regions of the Korean Peninsula. Emission values were calculated using pseudo inverse method, PNN and NNLS. Pseudo inverse method could be used for the model, but it may have negative emission values. In order to deal with the problem, we used the PNN and NNLS methods. As a result, the estimation using the NNLS is closer to the measured values than that using PNN. The proposed tracing models have better utilization and generalization than those of conventional pseudo inverse model. It could be used more efficiently for air quality management and air pollution reduction.

  • We have closely examined the concentration change characteristics, emission amounts, and the material balance of hazardous air pollutants at both early and later stages of the prevention facilities. These results will be uses as the basic data when preparing for the regulatory and management plans for hazardous air pollutants. The results of the study on heavy metals illustrated that the content of heavy metals in sludge across five facilities were as follows: copper> zinc> chrome> nickel> cadmium> mercury. In terms of heavy metal content in swage sludge, the sludge in incinerating facilities other than the sludge in the D incinerating facility containing industrial water waste, was examined in order to satisfy the ocean contamination standard and fertilizer specifications. Most of the items were shown to have satisfied the emission tolerance standards in the latter part of the prevention facilities(The average elimination rate was over 90%). Therefore, it is concluded that swage sludge containing high-concentrate heavy metals needs to be incinerated rather than recycled as fertilizer.

  • For the efficient control of atmospheric quality, it is so important to predict the influence accurately of which the air pollutant emitted into the atmosphere. Atmospheric dispersion model enables to simulate and grasp the atmospheric condition occurred due to the emission of pollutants. The result of model is largely affected by the amount of emission, the characteristics of physical and chemical process, meteorological input data, and the receptor which the concentration is calculated. The aim of this research, therefore, is to suggest more suitable model in Pusan area than other areas by performing TCM2, CDM2.0 and ISCLT2 models. As the basic work for executing the model, we computed the amount of emission of air pollutants in Pusan at 1992 and analyzed the occurrence frequency of atmospheric stability for recent decade(1985~19941, CDM2.0 showed the similar result relatively with observed value in the case of full year(1992), fall and winter, and ISCLT2 brought more suitable result in spring for Pusan area. As the result of this research, in future, it is necessary for us to develop the numerical model considering the topographical characteristics, to select the proper observation site and to increase the observation site for Pusan.

  • In odrder to survey the emission level of air pollutants from diesel vehicles, was measured CO, HC, NOx and smoke of 4 types of domestic-use diesel engines under various conditions. The emission of CO, HC and NOx tested by 6-Mode test method and smoke emission by full load test met the permissible vehicle emission standard. Pollutant emission rates of diesel engines were different according to engine operating conditions, that is, engine load and engine speed. Generally, CO and HC was emitted more at low load and NOx at high load but the trend was quite different by the type of engines. In exhaust gas, $NO_2$ portion of NOx emission was high, specially at low speed and low load. The correlation equation between CLD(NOx) and NDIR(NO) method of nitrogen of nitrogen oxides analysis was y = 1.10x - 3.48 (y: CLD method) as a result of 6-mode test.
