  • We report the properties of optically pumped stimulated emission at room temperature (RT) from column-III nitride semiconductors of GaN, AlGaN/GaN double heterostructure (DH) and AlGaN/GaInN DH which prepared on a sapphire substrate using an AIN buffer-layer by the nietalorganic vapor phase epitaxy (MOVPE) method. The peak wavelength of the stimulated emission at RT from AIGaN/GaN DH is 369nm and the threshold of excitation pumping power density (P$\_$th/) is about 84kW/cm$\^$2/, and they from AlGaN/GaInN DH are 402nm and 130kW/cm$\^$2/ at the pumping power density of 200kW/cm$\^$2/, respectively. The P$\_$th/ of AIGaN/GaN and AlGaN/GaInN DHs are lower than the single layers of GaN and GaInN due to optical confinement within the active layers of GaN and GaInN, respectively.

  • Attempts to dope carbon nanotube (CNT) with impurities in order to control the electronic properties of the CNT is a natural course of action. Boron is known to improve both the structural and electronic properties. In this report, we study the field emission properties of Boron-doped double-walled CNT (DWCNT). Boron-doped DWCNT films were fabricated by catalytic decomposition of tetrahydrofuran and triisopropyl borate over a Fe-Mo/MgO catalyst at $900^{\circ}C$. We measured the field emission current by varying the doping amount of Boron from 0.8 to 1.8 wt%. As the amount of doped boron in the DWCNT increases, the turn-on-field of the DWCNT decreases drastically from 6 V/${\mu}m$ to 2 V/${\mu}m$. The current density of undoped CNT is 0.6 mA/$cm^2$ at 9 V, but a doped-DWCNT sample with 1.8 wt% achieved the same current density only at only 3.8 V. This shows that boron doped DWCNTs are potentially useful in low voltage operative field emitting device such as large area flat panel displays.

  • Conjugated polymers have attracted much scientific and technological research interest during the past few decades because of their potential use such as polymer light-emitting diodes (PLEDs).1,2 Particularly, lots of phenylene-based polymers such as polyfluorene and its derivatives have been synthesized because of their high photoluminescence quantum efficiencies and thermal stabilities. However, troublesome long wavelength emission in polymer film of polyfluorenes on heating during device formation or operation has been the crucial problem for practical applications. The source of the long wavelength emission was initially believed to be solely due to excimer emission as a result of polymer aggregation. It has also recently been correlated with emissions from ketonic defects in the fluorene units. Many efforts have been made to reduce the tendency to red-shifted emission. Here, we report for the first time the design and synthesis of novel 9,9-spiro bifluornene-based polymers containing heteroatoms such as N, S in its molecular skeleton. Especially, the 9,9-spiro bifluornene-based polymers containing N atom showed stable blue electroluminescence, which did not show spectral change upon thermal annealing.

  • We report our 110 ks Chandra observations of the supernova remnant (SNR) 0104-72.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The X-ray morphology shows two prominent lobes along the northwest-southeast direction and a soft faint arc in the east. Previous low resolution X-ray images attributed the unresolved emission from the southeastern lobe to a Be/X-ray star. Our high resolution Chandra data clearly shows that this emission is diffuse, shock-heated plasma, with negligible X-ray emission from the Be star. The eastern arc is positionally coincident with a filament seen in optical and infrared observations. Its X-ray spectrum is well fit by plasma of normal SMC abundances, suggesting that it is from shocked ambient gas. The X-ray spectra of the lobes show overabundant Fe, which is interpreted as emission from the reverse-shocked Fe-rich ejecta. The overall spectral characteristics of the lobes and the arc are similar to those of Type Ia SNRs, and we propose that SNR 0104-72.3 is the first case for a robust candidate Type Ia SNR in the SMC. On the other hand, the remnant appears to be interacting with dense clouds toward the east and to be associated with a nearby star-forming region. These features are unusual for a standard Type Ia SNR. Our results suggest an intriguing possibility that the progenitor of SNR 0104-72.3 might have been a white dwarf of a relatively young population.

  • Gaseous inner disks are the main controller of the final structure of planetary systems as well as the building place of planets, especially of terrestrial planets. However, the inner disk of <5AU is still difficult to be spatially resolved even at the closest star forming regions. Resolving velocity structure in the disk with high resolution infrared spectroscopic study is the best approach to study the inner disk at this moment. Here, we present the IGRINS (Immersion GRating INfrared Spectrometer) result of the Class I young stellar object, ESO Ha 279a, in the Serpens molecular cloud region. IGRINS has a resolving power of R=40,000, corresponding to the velocity resolution of 7 km/s at K-band, which is perfect to study the hot inner disk structure. We report that NaI and CO overtone emission lines are indeed good tracers of the rotating inner warm disk tracing from ~0.04 to ~7AU of this source. We also report the disk properties using other emission lines.

  • This study was reviewed the national greenhouse gas inventory report (NIR) of Annex I countries and estimated national greenhouse gas inventory on wetlands in Korea. Annex I countries submitted National Inventory Report which are focused on land converted to wetlands category and wetland remaining wetland (mainly peat lands) because IPCC did not suggest a formal methodology on flooded land. So we conducted a study on estimating of national greenhouse gas inventory in wetland (flooded land). The total annual $CO_2-eq.$ emission of wetland remaining wetland (flooded land) was ranged from 99.9 Gg $CO_2-eq.$ to 237.1 Gg $CO_2-eq.$ from 1990 to 2012. The $CO_2-eq.$ emissions was declined after peaking in 1995, however, it slightly increasing in recently years. The latest total $CO_2-eq.$ emission from flooded land was 117.7 Gg $CO_2-eq.$ in 2012 which was covered only 0.00002% of national GHG inventory. This means that flooded land is not key-category in Korea. We will consider an improvement for emissions of flooded land, if IPCC suggest formal or complementary methodology.

  • Ppupose: Velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI) during articulation development period can cause compensatory articulation like glottal stop, which can maintain VPI symptoms such as hypernasality and nasal emission despite of recovered velopharyngeal function. Methods: A girl visited our department with speech problems such as hypernasality, compensatory articulation patterns, and nasal air emission. She had history of postpalatoplasty fistula which was repaired after 1 year follow-up. Results: After treated with speech therapy without surgery, her hypernasal speech problem was corrected. From this, we could assume that the fistula during articulation development period induced VPI, which leads to glottal substitution and this compensatory articulation maintained VPI though the fistula was repaired. Conclusion: In this report, we could observe that palatal fistula in articulation development period can have detrimental effect on articulation, and also we could confirm that evaluation of soft palate mechanism with using speech sample without compensatory articulations prevent the patient from unnecessary operation.

  • Velopharyngeal dysfunction in cleft palate patients following the primary palate repair may result in nasal air emission, hypernasality, articulation disorder and poor intelligibility of speech. Among conservative treatment methods, speech aid prosthesis combined with speech therapy is widely used method. However because of its long time of treatment more than a year and low predictability, some clinicians prefer a surgical intervention. Thus, the purpose of this report was to increase an attention on the effectiveness of speech aid prosthesis by introducing a case that was successfully treated. In this clinical report, speech bulb reduction program with intensive speech therapy was applied for a patient with velopharyngeal dysfunction and it was rapidly treated by 5months which was unusually short period for speech aid therapy. Furthermore, advantages of pre-operative speech aid therapy were discussed.

  • UWISH2 (UKIRT Widefield Infrared Survey for $H_2$) is an unbiased, narrow-band imaging survey of the Galactic plane in the $H_2$ 1-0 S(1) emission line at $2.122{\mu}m$ using the Wide-Field Camera (WFCAM) at the United Kingdom Infrared Telescope (UKIRT). The survey covers about 150 square degrees of the first Galactic quadrant ($10^{\circ}$ < l < $65^{\circ}$; $-1.3^{\circ}$ < b < $+1.3^{\circ}$). The images have a $5{\sigma}$ detection limit of point sources of K~18 mag and the surface brightness limit is $10^{-19}\;W\;m^{-2}$ $arcsec^{-2}$. The survey operation began on 28 July 2009 and has completed on 17 August 2011. We have been studying the supernova remnants (SNRs) in the UWISH2 survey area. Among the known 274 Galactic SNRs, the survey area includes 65 SNRs or 24 percent of the known SNRs. The wide-field and high-quality UWISH2 images allow us to identify both the diffuse extended and compact $H_2$ emission associated with SNRs, which is useful for understanding their physical environment and evolution. The continuum is subtracted from the narrow-band $H_2$ images using the K-band continuum images obtained as part of the UKIDSS GPS (UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey of the Galactic Plane). So far, we have inspected 42 SNRs, and found distinct H2 emission in 14 SNRs. The detection rate is 33%. Some of the SNRs show bright, complex, and interesting structures that have never been reported in previous studies. In this report, we present our identification scheme and preliminary results.

  • Development of Real-Time Quality Evaluation of Friction Welding by Acousitc Emission : Report 1 ABSTRACT : According as the friction welding has been increasingly applied in manufacturing various machine components because of its significant economic and technical advantages, one of the important concerns is the reliable quality monitoring method for a good weld quality with both joint strength and toughness in the process of its production. However no reliable nondestructive test method is available at present to determine the weld quality particularly in process of production. So this paper presents an experimental examination and quantitative analysis for the real-time evaluation of friction weld quality by acoustic emission, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line quality monitoring system design for friction welds using AE techniques. As one of the important results, it was confirmed, through this study, that AE techniques can be reliably applied to evaluating the friction weld qualify with 100% joint strength, as the cumulative AE counts occurring during welding period were quantitatively correlated with reliability at 95% confidence level to the joint strength of welds. Real-Time Evaluation of Automatic Production Quality Control for Friction Welding Machine : Report 2 Abstract : Both in-process quality control and high reliability of the weld is one of the major concerns in applying friction welding to the economical and qualified mass-production. No reliable nondestructive monitoring method is available at present to determine the real-time evaluation of automatic production quality control for friction welding machine. This paper, so that, presents the experimental examinations and statistical quantitative analysis of the correlation between the initial cumulative counts of acoustic emission(AE) occurring during plastic deformation period of the welding and the tensile strength of the welded joints as well as the various welding variables, as a new approach which attempts finally to develop an on-line (or real-time) quality monitoring system and a program for the process of real-time friction welding quality evaluation by initial AE cumulative counts. As one of the important results, it was well confirmed that the initial AE cumulative counts were quantitatively and cubically correlated with reliability of 95% confidence level to the joint strength of the welds, bar-to-bar (SCM4 to SUM31, SCM4 to SUM24L) and that an AE technique using initial AE counts can be reliably applied to real-time strength evaluation of the welded joints, and that such a program of the system was well developed resulting in practical possibility of real-time quality control more than 100% joint efficiency showing good weld with no micro-structural defects.
