Overview of the Effect of Catalyst Formulation and Exhaust Gas Compositions on Soot Oxidation In DPF

  • This work reviews the effects of catalyst formulation and exhaust gas composition on soot oxidation in CDPF (Catalytic Diesel Particulate Filter). DOC's (Diesel Oxidation Catalysts) have been loaded with Pt catalyst (Pt/$Al_{2}O_3$) for reduction of HC and CO. Recent CDPF's are coated with the Pt catalyst as well as additives like Mo, V, Ce, Co, Fe, La, Au, or Zr for the promotion of soot oxidation. Alkali (K, Na, Cs, Li) doping of metal catalyst tends to increase the activity of the catalysts in soot combustion. Effects of coexistence components are very important in the catalytic reaction of the soot. The soot oxidation rate of a few catalysts are improved by water vapor and NOx in the ambient. There are only a few reports available on the mechanism of the PM (particulate matter) oxidation on the catalysts. The mechanism of PM oxidation in the catalytic systems that meet new emission regulations of diesel engines has yet to be investigated. Future research will focus on catalysts that can not only oxidize PM at low temperature, but also reduce NOx, continuously self-cleaning diesel particulate filters, and selective catalysts for NOx reduction.

  • Since air pollution has become a globally critical issue and exhaust emissions from automobiles cause a major source of air pollution, many countries including advanced countries have stipulated stringent emission regulations. This test was conducted on the effect of continuous regeneration diesel particulate filter and cooled-EGR, and 15ppm low sulfur diesel was used as a test fuel. Exhaust emissions, PM, NOx, CO, HC and Soots were measured and compared under D-13modes. Through durability test on diesel particulate filter, regeneration characteristics and control technology on PM were investigated in overall.

Particularly in diesel vehicles, NOx and particulate matters exhaust in significant amounts even though diesel vehicles provide merits in aspects of higher thermal efficiency and lower $CO_2$. To reduce Particulate matters and NOx, after-treatment technology such as filter trap, oxidation catalysts and EGR has been applied. This test was conducted on the effect of continuous regeneration diesel particulate filter and cooled-EGR, and 15ppm low sulfur diesel was used as a test fuel. Exhaust emissions, PM, NOx, CO, HC and Soots were measured and compared under D-13 and D-3 modes.

  • The increasing numbers of automobiles keep causing air-pollution problems worse than ever. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modern technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. This research emphasized on the development of Continuously Regenerating DPF technology which was the best particulate matters removing technology of current existing technology because of its superior comparability and high applicability. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a Continuously Regenerating DPF ona displacement 7,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on engine performance and characteristics on exhaust emissions with the application of a Continuously Regenerating DPF in a heavy-duty diesel vehicle.

  • According to reports in EU and USA, Aromatic ingredient in diesel estimated the causative agent of air pollution. Because reduction of total aromatic and Poly-aromatic compound content are decreasing environmentally harmful emissions HC, NOx, PM. It is necessary to investigate correlationship between automotive technology and fuel quality in Korea. This study examines emission effect of two representative domestic vehicles(2.2 L for emission of Euro 4, 5) and five kinds of domestic diesel fuel (total aromatic compound content 26, 28, 30 wt% and poly-aromatic compound content 3, 5 wt%). Finally, Environmental impact assessment was studied between vehicle and diesel fuel.

  • Suddenly increasing numbers of automobiles result in making worse air pollution problems. In particular, the emissions from automobiles affect badly on atmosphere. Nowadays, research on catalyst converter and filter trap as a modem technology is very active because PM is designated as a major cancer material and stringent regulations on this are necessary and required. The ceramic filter is very efficient in reducing particular materials up to 80-90% and is evaluated as a very efficient after-treatment technology. However, it comes with decreased engine performance due to increased back-pressure occurred by thermal crack. In order to solve these problems, several methods are proposed such as fuel additive, electric heater and burner types. This experimental study has been conducted with equipped and unequipped a ceramic filter on a displacement 11,000cc diesel engine and compared in terms of engine performance and emission. To measure the emission, D-13 mode is applied and measured quantities of the exhaust gases, particularly in CO, HC, PM, and NOx. Therefore, this research is focused on the basic mechanism and characteristics on harmful materials generated by ceramic filter.

  • This study effect of engine oils on regulated fuel economy and emissions including particulate matter (PM) to provide basic data for management of engine oil in vehicles. Three engine oils (Group III base oil, Group III genuine oil with additive package and synthetic oil with poly alpha olefins (PAOs)) were used in one gasoline, one LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) and two diesel vehicles. In the case of diesel vehicles, one is a diesel vehicle without DPF (diesel particulate filter) other is a diesel vehicle with DPF. In this study, the US EPA emission test cycle FTP-75, representing city driving, was used. HORIBA, PIERBURG, and AVL gas analyzers were used to measure the fuel economy and regulated emissions such as CO, NOx, and THC. The number of PM was measured using a PPS (pegasor particle sensor). And, the shape of PMs was analyzed by SEM (scanning electron microscope). The effects of oil type on fuel economy, exhaust gas, and PM were not significant because engine oil consumption by evaporation and combustion in the cylinder is very tiny. Fuel and vehicle type were dominant factors in fuel economy and emissions. HC emission from gasoline vehicles was higher than that from other vehicles and NOx emission from diesel vehicles was higher than that from other vehicles. The number of PM was not affected by the engine oil, but by the driving pattern and fuel. The shapes of the PM, sampled from each vehicle using any test engine oil, were similar.
