  • Microprocessors, which need correct arithmetic operations, have been the subject of in-depth research in relation to soft errors. Of the existing microprocessor devices, the memory cell is the most vulnerable to soft errors. Moreover, when soft errors emerge in a memory cell, the processes and operations are greatly affected because the memory cell contains important information and instructions about the entire process or operation. Users do not realize that if soft errors go undetected, arithmetic operations and processes will have unexpected outcomes. In the field of architectural design, the tool that is commonly used to detect and correct soft errors is the error check and correction code. The Itanium, IBM PowerPC G5 microprocessors contain Hamming and Rasio codes in their level-2 cache. This research, however, focuses on huge server devices and does not consider power consumption. As the operating and threshold voltage is currently shrinking with the emergence of high-density and low-power embedded microprocessors, there is an urgent need to develop ECC (error check correction) circuits. In this study, the in-output data of the level-2 cache were analyzed using SimpleScalar-ARM, and a 32-bit H-matrix for the level-2 cache of an embedded microprocessor is proposed. From the point of view of power consumption, the proposed H-matrix can be implemented using a schematic editor of Cadence. Therefore, it is comparable to the modified Hamming code, which uses H-spice. The MiBench program and TSMC 0.18 um were used in this study for verification purposes.

  • The Purpose of this study was to observe force required to remove some kinds of pin from dentin. The teeth were embedded within a resin cylinder and the occlusal surface was sectioned at a right angle to the axis of the cylinder to expose dentin surface. Thread mate system pin (minim and regular), friction Iocked pin and cemented pin were tested Pin holes were drilled by handpiece and depths of pin holes were tested 1,2 and 3mm. After insertion of the pins into pinhole, tensile loading was performed on the Instron testing machine at the speed of 0.5 inch/min. Results were follewed: 1. In retention, the cemented pins are the least, the friction locked pins intermediate and the self threading pins the greatest in all pins. In self threading pins, regalar pin has greater retention than minim pin 2. The deeper the depth of the pin hole is, the more the retention of the pin increases.

  • The radar method is becoming one of the major nondestructive testing (NDT) techniques for concrete structures. Numerical modeling of electromagnetic wave is needed to analyze radar measurement results and to study the influence of measurement parameters on the radar measurements. Finite difference-time domain (FD-TD) method is used to simulate electromagnetic wave propagation through concrete specimens. Three concrete specimens with a 25 mm delamination embedded at 25 mm, 50 mm, and 75mm depth are modeled in 3-dimension. Also, thickness change of delamination and permittivity change are modeled.

  • Bridge dynamic behaviors and the failure of the foundation are examined in this study under seismic excitations including the local scour effect. The simplified mechanical model, which can consider the effect of various influence elements, is proposed to simulate the bridge motions. The scour depths around the foundations are estimated by the CSU equation recommended by the HEC-18 and the local scour effect upon global bridge motions is then considered by applying various foundation stiffness based upon the reduced embedded depths. From the simulation results, it is found that seismic responses of a bridge with the same scour depth for both foundations increase due to the local scour effect. The bridge scour is found to be significant under weak and moderate seismic intensity. The recovery durations of the foundation stiffness after local scour are found to be critical in the estimation of the probability of foundation failure under earthquakes. Therefore, the safety of the whole bridge system should be conducted with the consideration of the scour effect upon the foundations and the recovery duration of stiffness should be determined rationally.

  • Reinforced concrete is in general known as high durability construction material under normal environments due to strong alkalinity of cement. Marine and harbour concrete in the tidal and the splash zone at seashore are exposed to cyclic wet and dry saltwaters which cause to accelerate corrosion of reinforcing steel in concrete. If corrosion resistance of concrete gets to weaken due to carbonations and cracks in cover concrete, furthermore, concrete durability rapidly decreases by corrosion of reinforcement steel embedded in concrete. The objective of this study is to develop appropriate corrosion protection systems so as to enhance the durability of concrete by controlling the cover depth of concrete and by using corrosion inhibitors as concrete admixtures.

  • Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry(ESPI) is one of optical technique to measure displacement precisely, uses CCD camera to show result image in real time. General ESPI system measures in-plane or out-of-plane displacement. Shearography is one of electronic speckle pattern interferometric methods which allow full-field observation of surface displacement derivatives and it is robust in vibration. The shearography provides non-contacting technique of evaluating defects nondestructively. In this study, the shearography was used to evaluate defects in Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic(CFRP). Various sizes of artificial defects were embedded in various depths of woven CFRP plate. Effects due to the variation of size and depth of defects were evaluated in this study.

  • This study concerns crack effect on concrete anchor system and prediction of tensile capacity, as governed by concrete cone failure, of single anchors located at center of concrete specimen. To Investigate crack effect three different types of crack such as crack width of 0.2mm and 0.5nm, crack depth of loom and 20cm, and crack location of center and biased point were simulated. The static tensile load was subjected to 7/8 in. CIP anchor embedded in concrete of strength 280kg/$cm^{2}$. Tested pullout capacity was compared to prediction value by each current design method (such as ACI 349-97, ACI 349 revision and CEB-FIP which is based on CC Method), In these comparison CC Method and ACI revision showed almost same value in uncracked concrete specimen, however in cracked concrete CC Method showed conservativeness. Therefore the design by ACI 349 revision is recommended for the safe and economic design.

  • This study compared the reinforcing effect of sand by Geocell to those of newly devised Tirecell$^{\circledR}$ made by waste tires, tire mat by sidewalls of tires. Plate loading tests in a large chamber were conducted for different reinforcing materials at the same conditions of relative density, embedded depth of sand. The combination of Tirecell and sidewall gives the highest increase of bearing capacity and reduction of settlement. The Geocell with the same height of Tirecell gives similar reinforcement effect to the tire mat made by sidewalls.

  • A technique is presented that uses a circular waveguide for the measurement of the bulk shear(S-wave) velocities of unconsolidated, saturated media, with particular application to near surface soils. The technique requires the measurement of the attenuation characteristics of the fumdamental T(0,1) mode that propagates along an embedded pipe, from which the acoustic properties of the surrounding medium are inferred. From the dispersion curve analysis, the feasibility of using T(0,1) mode which is non-dispersive and have constant attenuation over all frequency range is discussed. The principles behind the technique are discussed and the results of an experimental laboratory validation are presented. The experimental data are best fitted for the different depths of wetted sand and the shear velocities as a function of depths are formulated using power law curves.

  • When plate anchors are embedded in soft clay, they may undergo a deformation under the pressure of sustained load. The critical depth at which the transition from a shallow to a deep anchor takes place depends on the properties of soil. Laboratory model tests were performed for the short-term net ultimate uplift capacity of a circular anchors with respect to various embedment depths and moisture content in saturated kaolinite. The tests have been conducted with the anchor at two different moisture contents. Based on the model test results, empirical relationships between the net load, rate of strain, and time have been developed. In creep tests of kaolinite for load versus ultimate uplift capacity, the displacement of plate anchors rapidly increases during the primary stage but thereafter becomes constant over a period of time.
