  • In this paper, an embedded micro processor based resistance spot welding controller is introduced which has been recently developed by Hyosung Co. Ltd. The performance of rapid and constant high current control is tested experimentally. This paper shows configurations of measuring system for high current and realtime RMS conversion techniques of sampled discrete data. A digital proportional control is adopted for this system and the result shows that this new product is working well at wide range of welding current and the performance is improved compared with some other commercially available controllers that are widely used in our industries. User friendly MMI system and a computer network system to monitor each welding processes are also presented.

  • In this study, establishment of standard design procedure and optimum dimension of the embedded steel-plate cellular bulkheads for seawall structures in deep water sites has been presented. A computer program was developed to asses feasible dimensions of steel-plate cell, and general equations to determine optimum cell diameter and embedment depth are derived for sand. A model experiment to verify the necessary driving force of vibratory hammer system was also performed and driving force data pertinent to optimum cell dimension are presented.

  • Some embedded microprocessors do not have an FPU(Floating Point Unit) due to a circuit complexity and power consumption. The performance speed of MPEG-4 AAC decoder on this hardware environment would be slower than corresponding speed for playing back of the decoded results. Therefore, irritating and high-pitched noises are interleaved in the original the audio data. So, in order to play MPEG-4 AAC file on such PDA, a new algorithm that transforms floating-point arithmetic to one with integers, is needed. We have developed a transformation algorithm from floating-point operation to integer operation and implemented the PDA's AAC Player. We also show the efficiency of our proposed method with the experimental results.

  • Recently, NMEA2000 became the de facto standard of the communication protocol for the instrument level network in vessels, and it is anticipated that most of the vessels will be equipped with the sensors and actuators based on this protocol. The conventional serial communication specifications such as RS-232, RS-485, or even NMEA0183 are single-talker/multiple-listener and interconnection among multiple sensors and/or actuators usually results in a bundle of wires. On the other hand, NMEA2000 is a true bus type(multiple-talker/multiple-listener) protocol and theoretically up to 256 instruments can be hot-plugged. With the advent of the protocol, it is necessary to consider a new type of monitoring system for the instruments in vessels: In most traditional serial communication environments, a dedicated monitor or user interface was necessary for each sensor or actuator as it was simply not easy to collect data in a single place. With NMEA2000, the collection of various types of information is simple. An embedded system can be employed to combine, to arrange and to display informations from various types of devices. Assuming that the actuators and sensors on a vessel are interconnected by NMEA2000 standard, we devise a tentative interactive vessel monitoring system in which the following 4 kinds of informations are collected and delivered: the navigation, engine, weather and tanks informations.

  • A realization for automatic stock cubic measuring and distributing management embedded system with 3 dimensional ultrasonic sensing is presented in this paper. The height and width of cubic are measured by comparing the 3 values from 3 ultrasonic sensors with reference when an object is passing the conveyer and length is calculated by the passing time and velocity, compensate cubic values for error to vary with the environment temperature, and reduce the error by averaging the sensing data not to be right posture of object. The system enables to classify and load a packed stocks at the store and transportation practically based on the rectangular hexahedral objects.

Smart Phone Robot Made of Smart Soft Composite (SSC)

  • Soft morphing robotics making use of smart material and based on biomimetic principles are capable of continuous locomotion in harmony with its environment. Since these robots do not use traditional mechanical components, they can be built to be light weight and capable of a diverse range of locomotion. This paper illustrates a flexible smart phone robot made of smart soft composite (SSC) with inchworm-like locomotion capable of two-way linear motion. Since rigid components are embedded within the robot, bending actuators with embedded rigid segments were investigated in order to obtain the maximum bending curvature. To verify the results, a simple mechanical model of this actuator was built and compared with experimental data. After that, the flexible robot was implemented as part of a smart phone robot where the rigid components of the phone were embedded within the matrix. Then, experiments were conducted to test the smart phone robot actuation force under different deflections to verify its load carrying capability. After that, the communication between the smart phone and robot controller was implemented and a corresponding phone application was developed. The locomotion of the smart phone robot actuated through an independent controller was also tested.

  • While H.264/AVC is in wide use for multimedia applications such as DMB and IPTV service, we have limited usage cases for embedded real-time applications due to its high computational demand. The paper provides judicious guide line for optimization method selection, by presenting the detailed experiments data through the development process of a real time H.264 software encoder on embedded DSP. The experimental analysis includes an intensive profiling analysis, fast algorithm application, optimal memory assignment, and intrinsic-based instruction selection. We have realized a real-time software that encodes CIF resolution videos 15 fps on TMS320DM64x processors.

  • Embedded business will be expanded market more and more since customers seek more wearable and ubiquitous systems. Cellular telephones, PDAs, notebooks and portable multimedia devices could bring higher microprocessor revenues and more rewarding improvements in performance and functions. Increasing battery capacity is still creeping along the roadmap. Until a small practical fuel cell becomes available, microprocessor developers must come up with power-reduction methods. According to MPR 2003, the instruction and data caches of ARM920T processor consume $44\%$ of total processor power. The rest of it is split into the power consumptions of the integer core, memory management units, bus interface unit and other essential CPU circuitry. And the relationships among CPU, peripherals and caches may change in the future. The processor working on higher operating frequency will exact larger cache RAM and consume more energy. In this paper, we propose advanced low power trace cache which caches traces of the dynamic instruction stream, and reduces cache access times. And we evaluate the performance of the trace cache and estimate the power of the trace cache, which is compared with conventional cache.

  • On lot of ships, Ballast Water Treatment Systems(BWTS) are in use, or the newly built ship should be mandatory installation by 2017. It is IMO(International Maritime Organization) regulations. Because the vessel is in long distance, It is managed this system only in the vessel and it may occur considerable cost of maintenance when a problem arises from BWTS. We describe in this paper how to monitor treated ballast water to make sure the ballast water and BWTS on a ship is in proper condition, but before the port entrance. In addition, analysing and forecasting trend signal to prevent failure. Also we can expect reduce the cost of BWTS maintenance. We can monitor the sensor data value's change which collected through satellite from BWTS. And we can observate the ballasting and de-ballasting state of the vessel easily.

Bearing Strength of Hybrid Coupled Shear Wall Connections

  • Due to lack of information, current design methods to calculate bearing strength of connections are tacit about cases in which hybrid coupled walls have connection details of stud bolts and horizontal ties. In this study, analytical study was carried out to develop model for calculating the connections strength of embedded steel section. The bearing stress at failure in the concrete below the embedded steel coupling beam section is related to the concrete compressive strength and the ratio of the width of the embedded steel coupling beam section to the thickness of the shear walls. Experiments were carried out to determine the factors influencing the bearing strength of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The test variables included the reinforcement details that confer a ductile behavior in connection between steel coupling beam and shear wall, i. e., the auxiliary stud bolts attached to the steel beam flanges and the transverse ties at the top and the bottom steel beam flanges. In addition, additional test were conducted to verify the strength equations of the connection between steel coupling beam and reinforced concrete shear wall. The results of the proposed equations in this study are in good agreement with both our test results and other test data from the literature.
