This paper introduces balancing energy and memory consumption for lifetime increase of wireless sensor network. In cluster-based wireless sensor network, sensor nodes adjacent of cluster heads have a tendency to deplete their own battery energy and cluster heads occupy memory space significantly. If the nodes close to region where events occur frequently consume their energy and memory fully, network might be destroyed even though most of nodes are still alive. Therefore, it needs to balance network energy and memory with consideration of event occurrence probability so that network lifetime is increased. We show a method of balancing wireless sensor network energy and memory to organize cluster groups and elect cluster heads in terms of event occurrence probability.
Biomedical mobile devices for ubiquitous healthcare consist of biomedical sensors and communication terminal. They have two types of configuration. One is the sensor-network type device using wired or wireless communication with intelligent sensors to acquire biomedical data. The other is the sensor embedded type device, where the data can be acquired directly by itself. There are many examples of sensor network type, such as, fall detection sensor, blood glucose sensor, and ECG sensors networked with commercial PDA phone and commercial phone terminal for ubiquitous healthcare. On the other hand, sensor embedded type mounts blood glucose sensor, accelerometer, and etc. on commercial phone. However, to enable true ubiquitous healthcare, motion sensing is essential, because users go around anywhere and their signals should be measured and monitored, when they are affected by the motion. Therefore, in this paper, two biomedical mobile devices with motion monitoring function were addressed. One is sensor-network type with motion monitoring function, which uses Zigbee communication to measure the ECG, PPG and acceleration. The other is sensor-embedded type with motion monitoring function, which also can measure the data and uses the built-in cellular phone network modem for remote connection. These devices are expected to be useful for ubiquitous healthcare in coming aged society in Korea.

This paper addresses the system lifetime maximization algorithm in multi-hop sensor network system. A multi-hop sensor network consists of many battery-driven sensor nodes that collaborate with each other to gather, process, and communicate information using wireless communications. As sensor-driven applications become increasingly integrated into our lives, we propose a energy-aware scheme where each sensor node transmits informative data with adaptive data rate to minimize system energy consumption. We show the optimal data rate to maximize the system lifetime in terms of remaining system energy. Furthermore, the proposed algorithm experimentally shows longer system lifetime in comparison with greedy algorithm.
This paper presents an analysis architecture of embedded operating systems for wireless sensor network. Wireless multi-hop sensor networks use battery-operated computing and sensing device. We expect sensor networks to be deployed in an ad hoc fashion, with very high energy constraints. These characteristics of multi-hop wireless sensor networks and applications motivate an operating system that is different from traditional embedded operating system. These days new wireless sensor network embedded operating system come out with some advances compared with previous ones. The analysis is focusing on understanding differences of dominant wireless sensor network OS, such as TinyOS 2.0 with TinyOS 1.x.

In this paper, USN(Ubiquitous Sensor Network) is used in the structure of the tree routing was implemented in embedded systems. Tree Routing in the USN to the sink node to transmit sensor data is one of the techniques. When routing, sensor data is transmitted based on pre-defined ID according hop number. In order to have optimal routing path, the current state of the wireless sector and the sensor node informations were used. Also, received sensor data and the results of the tree routing by implementing an embedded system. This embedded system can be applied to a portable sensor information collecting system.

This paper presents a wireless sensor network protocol aimed for artificial structure monitoring. The proposed protocol enables the sensor network to operate at a low duty cycle for reducing power consumption with a high degree of synchronization accuracy. It also enables event-triggered measurement of environmental information with a high sampling rate and the transmission of the measured data with a low latency. The feasibility of the proposed protocol is demonstrated through experiments involving three sensor nodes and a sink node. Though a tunnel health monitoring was considered in the paper, the proposed protocol can be easily adopted in other areas.

Ubiquitous sensor network (USN) is composed of many sensor nodes which are one of the simplest form of embedded system. In developing the sensor network system, a debugging tool is necessary to test and verify the system. Recently, a so-called packet analyzer has been developed for this purpose, and it supports IEEE 802.15.4 which is considered as the standard for the sensor network protocols. The major function of the packet analyzer is to take RF packets from sensor nodes and show the structure and the data of the packets graphically to the user. However, the conventional packet analyzers do not support remote control because they require a USB interface along with a personal computer. To make it available for remote control, we propose a new packet analyzer based on a server-client scheme in which a server program is implemented on embedded Linux and a client program is implemented on Windows for convenient use.
This paper introduces a technology for robust and low maintenance cost sensor network capable to detect accelerations below a micro-g in a wide frequency bandwidth (above 1,000 Hz). Sensor networks with such performance are critical for navigation, seismology, acoustic sensing, and for the health monitoring of civil structures. The approach is based on the fabrication of an array of high sensitivity accelerometers, each utilizing Fabry-Perot cavity with wavelength-dependent reflectivity to allow embedded optical detection and serialization. The unique feature of the approach is that no local power source is required for each individual sensor. Instead one global light source is used, providing an input optical signal which propagates through an optical fiber network from sensor-to-sensor. The information from each sensor is embedded onto the transmitted light as an intrinsic wavelength division multiplexed signal. This optical "rainbow" of data is then assessed providing real-time sensing information from each sensor node in the network. This paper introduces the Fabry-Perot based accelerometer and examines its critical features, including the effects of imperfections and resolution estimates. It then presents serialization techniques for the creation of systems of arrayed sensors and examines the effects of serialization on sensor response. Finally, a fabrication process is proposed to create test structures for the critical components of the device, which are dynamically characterized.

As wireless sensor network are being deployed in a wide variety of application areas, the number of sensor nodes in a sensor filed becomes larger and larger. In the past, ISP (In-System Programming) method have been generally used for code update but the large number of sensor nodes requires a new code update method called network reprogramming. There are many challenging issues for network reprogramming since it can make an impact on the network lifetime. In this paper, a new sender selection scheme for network reprogramming protocol is proposed to decrease energy consumption for code update by minimizing overlapped area between sender nodes and reducing data contention. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme can reduce the amount of message traffic and the overall data transmission time.

Motion recognition is very useful for implementing an intuitive HMI (Human-Machine Interface). In particular, hands are the body parts that can move most precisely with relatively small portion of energy. Thus hand motion has been used as an efficient communication interface with other persons or machines. In this paper, we design and implement a light-weight ANN (Artificial Neural Network)-based hand motion recognition using a state-of-the-art flex sensor. The proposed design consists of data collection from a wearable flex sensor, preprocessing filters, and a light-weight NN (Neural Network) classifier. For verifying the performance and functionality of the proposed design, we implement it on a low-end embedded device. Finally, our experiments and prototype implementation demonstrate that the accuracy of the proposed hand motion recognition achieves up to 98.7%.
