  • A case study in low-power PostPC Platform is presented. We introduce an S3C2460 Mobile SoC Processor and Implementation of Embedded Linux on out platform. This Processor is designed to Multimedia & Telecommunication Applications. We focuse on the verification of S3C2460 Processor and operation of Embedded Linux OS on it.

  • The implement of JAVA API for supporting the embedded system is capable of developing the object oriented system with code reuse because the developer is able to use JAVA in the embedded system. The system dependant parts for implementing JAVA API are realized from a native function. In this paper, we devide JAVA API into the platform-independent JAVA part and platform-dependent native part for the implementation of JAVA API to manage the linux based embedded system devices, and focus on the control of the embedded system devices using JAVA API.

  • It is the approach of embedded system design that analyzes COS(Cut Out Switch) failure in the power distribution and an instantaneous breakdown of power distribution supply could cause the weakness of industrial competence and therefore we need to feed the stable power distribution with developing the technology of open-source embedded system. In this paper, we apply the LoRa technology which is the Internet of Things(IoT) protocol for low data rate, low power, low cost and long range sensor applications. We designed the hardware and software architecture setup and experimented the embedded system with network architecture and COS monitoring system including accelerometer for detecting the failure of distribution line and sensing the failure of its fuse holder by recognizing the variation and collision and afterwards sending the information to a gateway. With experimenting we designed the embedded platform for sensing the variation and collision according to the COS failure, monitoring its fuse holder status and transferring the information of states with LoRa technology.

  • This paper presents the EVM(Embedded Virtual Machine) which enables the execution of dynamic applications loaded in the embedded systems such as Mobile Devices(mobile phone, PDA), Set-Top Box, and Digital TV using downloading techniques. To accomplish this goal, we defined a SIL-(Standard Intermediate Language) code, and implemented a Bytecode-to-SIL translator which enables the execution of programs written in java language in the EVM platform without JVM, and a MSIL--to-SIL- translator which enables for programs written in .NET language to be executed in the EVM platform without .NET platform. Also, we developed a EFF(Executable File Format) builder as an assembler which translates SIL codes into an executable file, *.evm, and implemented the EVM which reads the *.evm file and executes it. The virtual machine for embedded systems developed in this paper is the software technologies that enable the execution of applications or contents without changes to when the platforms change. In fact, the virtual machine suggested here is not only usable as a standard model for existing virtual machines but also aid in more efficient execution of applications loaded in the embedded systems such as Mobile Devices, Digital TV, and Set-Top Box.

  • This paper proposes a low-complexity central processing unit (CPU) that is suitable for deeply embedded systems, including Internet of things (IoT) applications. The core features a 16-bit instruction set architecture (ISA) that leads to high code density, as well as a multicycle architecture with a counter-based control unit and adder sharing that lead to a small hardware area. A co-processor, instruction cache, AMBA bus, internal SRAM, external memory, on-chip debugger (OCD), and peripheral I/Os are placed around the core to make a system-on-a-chip (SoC) platform. This platform is based on a modified Harvard architecture to facilitate memory access by reducing the number of access clock cycles. The SoC platform and CPU were simulated and verified at the C and the assembly levels, and FPGA prototyping with integrated logic analysis was carried out. The CPU was synthesized at the ASIC front-end gate netlist level using a $0.18{\mu}m$ digital CMOS technology with 1.8V supply, resulting in a gate count of merely 7700 at a 50MHz clock speed. The SoC platform was embedded in an FPGA on a miniature board and applied to deeply embedded IoT applications.

Fast Booting of Linux Kernel using Dynamic IDE Device Probing Scheme (동적 IDE 장치 검사 기법을 이용한 리눅스 커널의 빠른 부팅)

  • Most of embedded systems have been developed practically based on the PC platform equipped with Intel x86 CPU since it is able to reduce the total time for product development and improve the reliability of product by making use of a variety of solutions developed for a long time in the PC environment. Also, embedded systems based on PC-platform mainly use a high-capacity hard disk as data storage device for applications intending to store multimedia data. Recently, while the capacity of hard disk is increasing rapidly, the start-up ready time of hard disk is growing longer more than 30 seconds. The lengthened start-up ready time may delay the booting time of embedded system seriously, weighting users down with inconvenience. This paper proposes the refined system architecture and the dynamic IDE device probing method for fast booting of linux kernel in the embedded system based on PC platform with high-capacity hard disks, and the performance of proposed methods is evaluated and presented.

Digital Costume Platform for the Expansion of Stage Representation Technology using LEDs (LED를 사용한 무대 표현 기술 확장을 위한 디지털 의상 플랫폼)

  • Recently, LEDs are used in various fields such as lightings, billboards, displays, and so on. In this paper, we tried to combine a costume with LEDs in a performance environment. To meet the environmental requirements, we propose a digital costume platform which consists of wireless network, an embedded system, a control jacket, a digital skin, and a pattern authoring tool. It is utilized for making a digital costume with LED lighting effects. The embedded system controls LED lighting according to the signals from a show control system through wireless networks. The control jacket can carry the embedded system and connect it with LEDs. The digital skin means a costume with LEDs. The LEDs were designed to fit in performance concept in point of aesthetic. The pattern authoring tool enables users to make timeline-based changing patterns of LED lighting. The proposed platform is a new lighting element in performances. It can expand stage representation techniques and be used as a special effect. It will play a role as a moving light in performances. We evaluated stable operations of our platform by employing it in live performances.

  • Recent semiconductor design technology has been substantially developed that we can design a micro-system on a chip as well as implementing an application specific IC in an FPGA. SPARTAN-3E developed by Xilinx is equipped with an FPGA that holds as much as 500 thousand transistors connected with MicroBlaze softcore microprocessor bus system. In this paper, we discuss a method of implementing an embedded system using the SPARTAN-3E. We also explain the peripherals and the bus protocols and the expandability of this kind of embedded systems.

  • Vision system is an object recognition system analyzing image information captured through camera. Vision system can be applied to various fields, and vehicle recognition is ole of them. There have been many proposals about algorithm of vehicle recognition. But have complex calculation processing. So they need long processing time and sometimes they make problems. In this research we suggested vehicle type recognition system using vision bpx based on embedded platform. As a result of testing this system achieves 100% rate of recognition at the optimal condition. But when condition is changed by lighting, noise and angle, rate of recognition is decreased as pattern score is lowered and recognition speed is slowed.

  • Android platform provides a content provider and a cursor mechanism to access the internal SQLite engine. Content providers not only store and retrieve data but also make it accessible to applications. Applications can only share data through content provider, since there's no common storage area that Android packages can access. Cursor is an interface that provides random read-write access to the result set returned by a database query. However, this cursor possesses two major limitations. First, a cursor does not support a join clause among cursors, since the cursor can only access a single table in the content provider. Second, the cursor is not capable of creating user-customized field in the predefined content providers. In this paper, we propose the unified cursor architecture that merges several cursors into a single virtual cursor. Cursor translation look-aside buffer (TLB), column windowing mechanism and virtual data management are the three major techniques we have adopted to implement our structure. And we also propose a delayed synchronization method between an application and a proposed unified cursor. An application can create a user-customized field and sort multiple tables using a unified cursor on Android platform.
