  • This paper describes the development of an embedded wireless LAN controller which can be in parallel operated with an existing utility controller. The embedded controller mainly consists of Prism(R) 2.5 chip set and Atmega 128 microcontroller. In order to communicate over the network, the controller including TCP/IP stack (IP, TCP, UDP, and ICMP), telnet, and X/Z modem has been developed. For a specific application, we have proposed an special method to convert data structure between TCP/IP and X/Z modem and a data buffer algorithm to minimize the RAM memory usage. Finally, the correctness and performance of the protocols are tested and verified using $CommView^{(R)}\;and\;DU^{(R)}$. The development is satisfactorily operated only for 3,381 bytes of RAM usage without sacrificing interoperability between hosts.

  • In recent, implementation of the embedded system is gradually in the spotlight of world-wide by information technology(IT) engineers. By this time, an implementation of real time system is limited on image acquisition and processing system in practical. In this paper, the USB camera interface system based on the embedded linux OS is implemented using USB 2.0 camera with low cost. This system can obtain image signals into the memory via X-hyper255B processor from USB camera. It is need to initialize USB camera by the Video4Linux for the kernel device driver. From the system image capturing and image processing can be performed. It is confirmed that the image data can be transformed to packet of Network File System(NFS) and connected to the internetwork, then the data can be monitored from the client computer connected to the internetwork.

  • In recent years, embedded systems such as cellular phones, Portable Multimedia Player, intelligent appliance, automobile engine control are reshaping the way people live, work, and play. Thereby, services application to guarantee various requirements of users become increasingly sophisticated and complicated, such embedded computing platforms use real-time operating systems (RTOSs) with time determinism. These RTOSs must not only provide predictable services but must also be efficient and small in size. Kernel services should also be deterministic by specifying how long each service call will take to execute. Having this information allows the application designers to better plan their real-time application software so as not to miss the deadline of each task. In this paper, we present the complete generalized real-time scheduling algorithm using multi-dimensional methodology to determine the highest priority in the ready list with 2r levels of priorities in a constant time without additional memory overhead.

  • As mobile computers and embedded systems are becoming popular recently, we need to study how to utilize the resources such as power, space, CPU clocks, and memory efficiently. In traditional embedded system development, we were interested in resource usage based on hardware but, as software is becoming more important, we need to study how to analyze the resource usage based on software. In this research, we propose a new method called 'Instruction Level Resource Usage Analysis Method' and implement it as a resource usage analysis tool called 'I-Debugger'. I-Debugger is constructed on three layers: debugging layer which controls the execution of software on instruction level, statistic layer which gathers real-time data and convert to useful information, and analysis layer which generate useful information to specific applications. We have applied the debugger to some simple problem and found that our method is useful in developing resource efficient embedded systems.

  • For VOD systems, it is important to provide QoS to more users under the limited resources. To analyze QoS issues in real environment, we implement clustered VOD server and embedded client system based on the Linux open source platform. The parallel processing of MPEG data, load balancing for nodes and VCR like functions are implemented in the server side. To provide more user friendly interface, the general TV is used for a VOD client's terminal and the embedded board is used supporting for VCR functions. In this paper, we measure the performance of the implemented VOD system under the various user requirement features and evaluate the sources of performance limitations. From these analyses, we propose the dynamic admission control method based on the availability memory and network bandwidth. The proposed method enhances the utilization of the system resource for the more QoS media streams.

  • Debugger systems are necessary to apply dynamic program analysis when evaluating security properties of embedded system software. It may be possible to make the use of software-based debugger and/or DBI framework if target devices support general purpose operating systems, however, constraints on applicability as well as environmental transparency might be incurred thereby hindering overall analyzability. Analysis with JTAG (IEEE 1149.1) debugging devices can overcome these difficulties in that no change would be involved in terms of internal software environment. In that sense, JTAG API can facilitate to practically perform dynamic program analysis for evaluating security properties of target device software. In this paper, we introduce an implementation of JTAG API to enable analysis of ARM core based embedded systems. The API function set includes the categories of debugger and target device controls: debugging environment and operation. To verify API applicability, we also provide example analysis tool implementations: our JTAG API could be used to build kernel function fuzzing and live memory forensics modules.

  • Flash memory has been widely used as an important storage device for consumer electronics. For the flash memory-based storage systems, FTL (Flash Translation Layer) is used to handle the mapping between a logical page address and a physical page address. Especially, log buffer-based FTLs provide a good performance with small-sized mapping information. In designing the log buffer-based FTL, one important factor is to determine the mapping structure between data blocks and log blocks, called associativity. While previous works use static associativity fixed at the design time, we propose a new log block mapping scheme which adjusts associativity based on the run-time workload. Our proposed scheme improves the I/O performance about 5~16% compared to the static scheme by adjusting the associativity to provide the best performance.

  • Flash memory is widely used in embedded systems because of its benefits such as non-volatile, shock resistant, and low power consumption. But NAND flash memory suffers from out-place-update, limited erase cycles, and page based read/write operations. To solve these problems, log-structured filesystem was proposed such as YAFFS. However, YAFFS sequentially retrieves an array of all block information to allocate free block for a write operation. Also before the write operation, YAFPS read the array of block information to find invalid block for erase. These could reduce the performance of the filesystem. This paper suggests fast operation method for NAND flash filesystem that solves the above-mentioned problems. We implemented the proposed methods in YAFFS. And we measured the performance compared with the original technique.

  • Many sensor operating systems have memory limitation constraint; therefore, stack memory areas of threads resides in a single memory space. Because most target platforms do not have hardware MMY (Memory Management Unit), it is difficult to protect each stack area. The method to solve this problem is to exchange original stack handling instructions in binary code for wrapper routines to protect stack area. In this exchanging phase, instruction corruption problem occurs due to difference of each instruction length between stack handling instructions and branch instructions. In this paper, we propose the algorithm to call a target routine without instruction corruption problem. This algorithm can reach a target routine by repeating branch instructions to have a short range. Our solution makes it easy to apply security patch and maintain upgrade of software of sensor node.

  • Due to the restrictions of Flash memory such as overwrite limitation and write/erase operational unit differences, block cleaning is required in Flash memory based file systems and known as a key factor on the performance of file systems. In this paper, we identify three parameters, namely utilization, invalidity and uniformity, and analyze how the parameters affect the cost of block cleaning. The analysis show that as uniformity degrades, the cost of block cleaning increases drastically. To overcome this problem, we design a new modification-aware(MODA) page allocation scheme that strives to keep uniformity high by separating frequently-updating data from infrequently-updating data. Real implementation experiments conducted on an embedded system show that the MODA scheme can actually enhance uniformity of Flash memory, which consequently leads to reduce the cost of block cleaning with an average of 123%, compared to the traditional sequential allocation scheme that is used in YAFFS.
