  • This research was aimed to extend the vase life, improve the cut flower quality and promote flowering rate of bulbous cut Iris 'Blue Magic'. Three different concentrations of 1-MCP ranging from 250 to $750nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were treated on cut Iris flowers for the vase life elongation. Several effects of 1-MCP treatment has shown such as early flowering as one day but vase life showed no significant differences comparing to the untreated control. Flowering rate was 75% or more in the treated ones as compare to 64.2% in untreated control. Especially, in a treatment with $250nL{\cdot}L^{-1}$ 1-MCP for 12 hours it showed all flowering. In many post-harvest experiments of cut flowers, ethylene production from flower organ has considered as most critical factor on vase life. Ethylene production from flower organ was measured by gas chromatography (GC) and it showed that there is no direct relation between flower longevity and emission of the ethylene gas in cut Iris. In comparison with the untreated control, ethylene generation rather seems to be increased as 1-MCP treatment increased. There was a synergy effect when 1-MCP and BA applied simultaneously in which flowering and vase life were fastened and also extended, respectively. Therefore, treatment of 1-MCP for cut Iris at flower early harvest is able to improve the flower quality both by diminishing non-flowering rate and by extended flower longevity.

  • These investigations were conducted to standardize several chemical and physical environments affecting in vitro propagation of gametophytes of Climacium japonicum. Propagation of this moss species was established on basal medium containing Knop macro salts and Nitsch and Nitsch trace elements. Primary cultures were initiated from apical shoots of gametophytes. Gametophyte production was accessed using chopped gametophytes, apical shoots and basal shoots. Seven ty pes of culture media and four concentrations of total nitrogen and five strengths of sucrose were tested for in vitro gametophyte production. Light and temperature factors were also evaluated. Apical shoots were the greatest among three types explants used for gametophyte propagation. Medium containing Knop macro salts and Nitsch and Nitsch trace elements was more effective than other types of media. Higher sucrose concentrations showed a positive effect on the elongation and multiplication of gametophytes. Both nitrogen deficiency and excessiveness inhibited gametophyte growth. Light intensity variation showed highly significant changes in numbers, length and fresh weight of gametophytes. Optimum light intensity for gametophyte growth seemed to be around 3000-4000 lx. Both lower and higher temperature had a negative effect on gametophyte propagation and production. This study will provide large scale and high quality propagules, and effective moss propagation system.

  • This work aims to obtain basic information for seed propagation of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata. The germination percentage of the seeds taken on 15 November, 30 December, and 23 January was $90.0{\pm}4.16%$, $84.4{\pm}5.52%$, and $88.9{\pm}2.40%$, respectively. This suggest that seeds of Hydrangea serrata for. acuminata are non-dormant seeds. The optimum temperature for germination was $25^{\circ}C$ and light was necessary. Most of the growth parameters (shoot and leaf length, stem diameter, root length, no. of roots, T/R ratio, and fresh and dry wts.) were significantly greater at $25/20^{\circ}C$ and $25^{\circ}C$ than at the other temperatures. Low T/R ratio at relatively cool temperatures (15 and $20^{\circ}C$) was caused by suppressed top growth. In light quality treatment, red light (RL) significantly enhanced stem elongation. The greatest photosynthetic pigments (total chl, chl a/b, and carotenoid) were observed in seedlings grown in blue light (BL), followed by seedlings grown in RL+BL. When blue light was added, higher pigment contents were found. Effect of plug cell size (50, 72, 128, 162 and 200 cells) on the growth of seedlings was investigated. The highest top growth was observed in seedlings grown in 50 cell trays, followed by seedlings grown in 72, 128, 162, and 200 cell trays. However, there was no significant differences between 162 and 200 cell trays. Especially, smaller size leaves were observed in seedlings grown in smaller cell trays (lower volume and high plant density).

  • In this study, the optimal welding condition of an extruded AZ61 magnesium alloy plate was investigated through evaluation of the mechanical properties and microstructure in the friction stir welding zones. The friction stir welding conditions considered in this study were the tool rotation speeds of 400, 600, and 800rpm and the welding speeds of 200, 300, and 400mm/min. To evaluate the welding strength, tensile and hardness tests were carried out. Microstructures of the welded regions were examined using optical microscopes. Under a tool rotation speed of 800rpm and welding speed of 200mm/min, the joint showed the best joining properties. The UTS, yield strength, and elongation of the welded region showed values of 79.0%, 65.4%, and 30.1%, respectively, of those of the base metal.

  • Silicone composites for high voltage insulator (HVI SC) were prepared by adding aluminum trihydrate(ATH) treated by surface treatment agent to base silicone compound at the ratio oi 100:20, 100:40, 100:60, 100:80, and 100:100, respectively And also, ATH was treated by various surface treatment agents, such as stearic arid, acryl silane, and vinyl silane under compounding process. Mechanical properties and electrical properties were investigated for the various contents of ATH and surface-treatment agents. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation, and tear strength decreased as the load of ATH increased. Volume resistivity, AC break down strength, and tracking resistance for HVI SC containing ATH treated by vinyl silane were better than those for HVI SC containing ATH treated by other surface treatment agents, such as stearic acid and acryl silane. Polymer-filler interaction of silicone composites according to surface treatment agents was studied by measuring bound rubber contend(BR). From the experimental results, BR of silicone composite containing ATH treated with vinyl silane was higher than that of the others. The degree of rule for silicone composite was investigated using Rheometer. Maximum torque of silicone composites contaning ATH treated with vinyl silane was higher than that of silicone composite contaning ATH treated with other surface agents.

  • In this work, $Fe_3O_4$ (magnetite), conductive filler was prepared from $FeCl_2{\cdot}4H_2O,\;(CH_2)_6N_4$ (hexamethylene tetramine), and $NaNO_2$, followed by mixing with crystallizable chloroprene rubber(CR). The influence of conductive filler content on the properties of the conductive composite was studied and temperature dependence of the electrical conductivity (${\sigma}$) was also investigated. It is found that the percolation threshold concept holds true for the conductive particle-filled composite where ${\sigma}$ indicates a nearly sharp increase when the fraction of magnetite in the mixture exceeds 27%. The temperature dependence of ${\sigma}$ is thermally activated blelow or at the $P_c$. Magnetite acts as reinforcement and conductive filler for CR rubber. Moreover, it is shown that the composite with magnetite of 50 phr gives the most significant mechanical properties for tensile strength and elongation at break, which is due to the formation of optimum physical interlock and crosslinking. The results of 100%, 200%, and 300% moduli suggest that the moduli are related with reinforcement effect of magnetite and viscosity of the blend.

  • Peel strength of epoxy adhesives can be increased by adding some amounts of XNBR. In this case, thermal resistance of the adhesive will be decreased by decrease of glass transition temperature of the adhesive. Epoxy resin modified with siloxane-imide was synthesized to improve thermal resistance and peel strength of the adhesive, after that the properties of modified epoxy resin were compared with the commercial epoxy resin. When 5% XNBR was added to 30% modified epoxy resin, this adhesive showed 0.42 N/mm of peel strength and $155^{\circ}C$ of glass transition temperature. These properties are enough compared to the required properties by the industry, i.e., 0.3 N/mm and $150^{\circ}C$, respectively. Weight loss of the modified epoxy resin by the treatment of nitric acid and 0.1N NaOH was reduced, but weight gain by the humid condition was increased by the presence of benzene ring and imide ring. 30% modified epoxy resin blended with 5% XNBR showed 220% improvement in tensile strength and elongation compared to the case of common epoxy resin. This is due to the flexibility of the siloxane in the modified epoxy resin.

  • The studies were carried out to screen the optimum conditions for enzymatic degumming of raw silk yarn and silk fabric by use of Alkalase, a protease produced by Bacteria, comparing with Papain and Trypsin representing natural proteolytic enzymes. 1. The optimum temperature and acidity of degumming solution were 70$^{\circ}C$, pH 5-6 for Papain degumming, 40$^{\circ}C$, pH 8 for Trypsin and 50-60$^{\circ}C$ pH 8-9 for Alkalase. 2. By increasing the Alkalase concentration in the range of 0.6 to 1.0 gram per liter, the time for enzymatic degumming of silk yarn could be reduced by 40 minutes. 3. In degumming of silk yarn by Alkalase, the pretreatment of 95$^{\circ}C$, 10 minutes at 0.1% sodium bicarbonate solution or posttreatent of 80$^{\circ}C$, 20 minutes at 2% (o.w.f.) sodium silicate solution improved the efficiency of enzymatic degumming, as compared to that of nontreatment. 4. The breaking strength, elongation and Lousiness results of enzymatically degummed silk yarn were apt to be improved more than those of soap-degummed one. 5. When the pretreatment of alkaline solution was done with over 20% of degumming ratio, the enzymatic degumming efficiency of both Havutae and Crepe de chine could be reached to the same level with those of soap-soda degummed. 6. As the pretreated silk fabric with 20% of degumming ratio was under action of three proteases, respectively, the deumming efficiency of Havutae and Crepe de chine were completed by Alkalase more than by Papain or Trpysin. 7. The stiffness of enzymatically degummed Crepe de chine was not only reduced by 17% more than that of soap-soda degummed one but also the Drape coefficient was decreased in enzymatically degummed fabrics, which was closely related with the soft touch of degummed fabrics.

  • This study investigated the overall dependence of the tensile properties of Al-Si alloys on the distribution aspect of a eutectic Si particle in terms of defect susceptibility to the effective void area fraction, referring to the sum of pre-existing microvoids and the damage evolution of the Si particle. The network morphology of as-cast Al-xSi (x=2,5,8,11) alloys was modified to a granular type via a T4 treatment, after which a computational topography (CT) analysis and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations were utilized to evaluate the size and distribution of the microvoids. The CT and SEM analyses indicated that the main cracks grow along local regions that possess the highest porosity level. The local plastic deformation around the microvoids and the distribution aspect of the microvoids induced a practical difference between the iso-volumetric CT measurement and the SEM fractography outcomes. The results demonstrated that the overall dependence of the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation on the effective void area fraction is more sensitive to the variation of the area fraction of the Si particle in the network morphology than in the granular type; this is due to the sequential damage evolution of the neighboring Si particles in the eutectic Si colony.

  • A total of 36 carbon steel and stainless steel bolted connections subjected to shear loading at different strain rates was experimentally investigated. The connection specimens were fabricated from carbon steel grades 1.20 mm G500 and 1.90 mm G450, as well as cold-formed stainless steel types EN 1.4301 and EN 1.4162 with nominal thickness 1.50 mm. The connection tests were conducted by displacement control test method. The strain rates of 10 mm/min and 20 mm/min were used. Structural behaviour of the connection specimens tested at different strain rates was investigated in terms of ultimate load, elongation corresponding to ultimate load and failure mode. Generally, it is shown that the higher strain rate on the bolted connection specimens, the higher ultimate load was obtained. The ultimate loads were averagely 2-6% higher, while the corresponding elongations were averagely 8-9% higher for the test results obtained from the strain rate of 20 mm/min compared with those obtained from the lower strain rates (1.0 mm/min for carbon steel and 1.5 mm/min for stainless steel). The connection specimens were generally failed in plate bearing of the carbon steel and stainless steel. It is shown that increasing the strain rate up to 20 mm/min generally has no effect on the bearing failure mode of the carbon steel and stainless steel bolted connections. The test strengths and failure modes were compared with the results predicted by the bolted connection design rules in international design specifications, including the Australian/New Zealand Standard (AS/NZS4600 2018), Eurocode 3 - Part 1.3 (EC3-1.3 2006) and North American Specification (AISI S100 2016) for cold-formed carbon steel structures as well as the American Specification (ASCE 2002), AS/NZS4673 (2001) and Eurocode 3 - Part 1.4 (EC3-1.4 2015) for stainless steel structures. It is shown that the AS/NZS4600 (2018), EC3-1.3 (2006) and AISI S100 (2016) generally provide conservative predictions for the carbon steel bolted connections. Both the ASCE (2002) and the EC3-1.4 (2015) provide conservative predictions for the stainless steel bolted connections. The EC3-1.3 (2006) generally provided more accurate predictions of failure mode for carbon steel bolted connections than the AS/NZS4600 (2018) and the AISI S100 (2016). The failure modes of stainless steel bolted connections predicted by the EC3-1.4 (2015) are more consistent with the test results compared with those predicted by the ASCE (2002).
