  • In this paper, the unsteady behavior of the viscous flow field past an impulsively started elliptic cylinder is studied numerically. In order to analyze flow field, we introduce vortex particle method. The vorticity transport equation is solved by fractional step algorithm which splits into convection term and diffusion term. The convection term is calculated with Biot-Savart law, the no-through boundary condition is employed on solid boundaries. The diffusion term is modified based on the scheme of particle strength exchange. The particle redistributed scheme for general geometry is adapted. The flows around an elliptic cylinder are investigated for various attack angles at Reynolds number 200. The comparison between numerical results of present study and experimental data shows good agreements.

  • The new geometric disturbance is proposed to control the flow around the bluff body. The new geometry is characterized by the variable pitch which is applied on the Helically Elliptic Twisted (HET) cylinder. The performance of the HTE geometry as a biomimetic passive flow control was confirmed by Jung and Yoon (2014). The Large Eddy Simulation (LES) is used for the evaluation of the flow control performance of the Variable Pitch HTE (VPHTE) cylinder at Reynolds number (Re) of 3000 corresponding to the subcritical regime. The circular and HTE cylinders are also considered to compare the performance of the VPHTE cylinder at the same Re. The VPHTE cylinder gives the smallest values of the force coefficients than the circular and HTE cylinders. The drag and lift coefficients of the VPHTE cylinder are about 15.2% and 94.0% lower than those of the circular cylinder, respectively. Especially, the VPHTE cylinder achieves about 2.3% and 30.0% reduction of the drag coefficient and the root mean square of the lift coefficient than the HTE cylinder, respectively. Furthermore, The VPHTE cylinder forms more elongated and stabilized separated shear layer than the circular cylinder, which supports the reduction of the force coefficients.

  • Two-dimensional incompressible Navier-Stokes equations are solved using SIMPLER method in the intrinsic curvilinear coordinates system to study the unsteady viscous flow physics over two-dimensional ellipses. Unsteady viscous flows over various thickness-to-chord ratios of 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 1.2 elliptic cylinders are simulated at different Reynolds numbers of 200, 400, and 1,000. This study is focused on the understanding the effects of Reynolds number and elliptic cylinder thickness on the drag and lift forces. The present numerical solutions are compared with available experimental and numerical results and show a good agreement. Through this study, it is observed that the Reynolds number and the cylinder thickness affect significantly the frequencies of the force oscillations as well as the mean values and the amplitudes of the drag and lift forces.

  • This study aims to compare stress concentratior factors in a loaded elastic body of the infinite plate with pressure coefficients of a fluid in the potential flow. First in view of hydrodynamics, when a single elliptic cylinder in the form of a bluff body stands in the potential flow, the pressure distribution(doefficient, C$\_$p/around the elliptic cylicder which is changed according to the position(angular displacements)is theoretically analyzed and calulated; secondly, in view of theory of elasticity, when an eliptic hole which is made on a flat plate gets tension, the stress distribution(factor) around the elliptic hole which is changed according to the position(angular displacements )is theoretically(K$\_$t/) and experimentally (K$\_$e/) measured; and finally. The results are compard and examined.

  • The shape memory alloys (SMAs) are often used in smart materials and structures as the active components. Their ability to provide a high recovery force and a large displacement has been used in many applications. In this paper the radial displacement of an externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinder where SMA liner or strips actuators are bonded on its inner or outer surface is investigated numerically. The elliptic composite cylinders consisting of an inlet duct system with SMAs are designed and analyzed to determine the feasibility of such a system for the removal of stiffeners from an externally pressurized duct of an aircraft inlet. The deformations caused by prestrained SMAs placed on either surface of an elliptic composite cylinder are studied when activated. The externally pressurized elliptic composite cylinders with the SMA actuators were analyzed using the 3-D finite element method incorporated with 3-D SMA behaviors. The results show that the role of stiffeners may be switched by the activated light SMA actuators.

  • Direct simulations of aerodynamic sound, especially sound emitted by rapidly rotating elliptic cylinder by the finite difference lattice Boltzmann method (FDLBM). Effect of pile-fabrics for noise reduction is also studied by the finite volume LBM (FVLBM) using an unstructured grid. Second order time integration and third order upwind scheme are shown to be enough for these simulations. Sound sources are detected to be doublets for both cases. For the elliptic cylinder, the doublet is generated in the interaction between the vortex and the edge. For the circular cylinders, they are generated synchronizing with the Karman vortex street, and it is also shown that the pile-fabrics covering the surface of the cylinder reduces the strength of the source.

  • A new wiregrid modeling scheme is proposed for a curvature varying scatterer A 2-dimensional conducting elliptic cylinder is modelled by wires with the different size of radius considering the radius of curvature on the surface. The magnitude of the internal field in the conducting elliptic cylinder is used as an indicator to check the accuracy of solutions between two methods. Numerical results show that this new wiregrid model scheme can be reduced the number of wires and applied to enhance the accuracy of solutions for a curvature varying scatterer.
