Most athletes execute rhythmic hop as a preparatory motion in Taekwondo sparring. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of rhythmic hop on the response times and kicking velocities of Taekwondo kicks. Twelve male elite Taekwondo athletes performed a roundhouse kick and a back kick as fast as possible immediately after seeing an external stimulus in rhythmic hop and in no hop, respectively. The three-dimensional marker data of the whole body were measured at sampling rate of 200 Hz. Paired t-tests were used to compare dependent measures between hop and no hop conditions. Results indicated that the rhythmic hop did not affect response time statistically but improved the kicking velocity significantly than no hop did. Different instants of detecting an external stimulus in rhythmic hop for the back kick showed significantly different response times. Conclusively, rhythmic hop is recommendable for the purpose of kicking velocity, but not for the purpose of response time. Athletes should be careful in executing rhythmic hop as their preparatory motions for the back kick, since the response time could be shortened or lengthened according to the instant of detecting an external stimulus.
Objective: The shoulders are a particularly an important body part for elite boxers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of the upper trapezius (UT), infraspinatus (IS) muscle tone, pain, and isokinetic muscle function of shoulder movements such as external rotation, internal rotation, protraction, and retraction according to the scapular position of elite boxers of the Korean national team. Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Using the double square method, the scapular position was measured and divided into the forward scapular position group (n=8) with a measurement distance of 135 mm or more, and the normal scapular position group (n=10) with a measurement distance of less than 135 mm. Through the numeric rating scale of the subject, the pain value displayed during movement was measured. The muscle tone of the subjects' UT and IS were measured. The isokinetic muscle function of ER, IR, protraction, and retraction were measured using isokinetic exercise equipment. Results: The results of this study showed statistically significant differences when comparing muscle tone of the UT and IS, shoulder pain, isokinetic function of ER and IR, protraction, and retraction according to scapular position (p<0.05). Conclusions: The findings of this study were that shoulder muscle tone, pain, and isokinetic muscle function were affected according to the scapular position of elite boxers. In the future, this information may be a useful indicator when studying the effects of medium and long-term intervention in elite boxers who possess these characteristics.
This study aims to verify the relationship between a motivational climate and self-management perceived by athletes. 195 male and 153 female athletes participated in this study. Firstly, reliability and validity are verified for questionnaires, and descriptive statistics, one way ANOVA, and regression analysis are used. The result of the correlation analysis says that all the factors have meaningful relations among them. The analysis on the effects of the motivational climate on self-management indicates that the mastery climate perceived by the athletes has affected statically the sub-factors of self-management such as mental management, training, management, personal relationship management, life management, health management, and intrinsic behavior control. However, the competitive climate didn't help self-management. Based on the study, it was suggested that through the mastery climate, a leader should make athletes manage and control themselves in terms of conquest strategies, self-assessment, problem-solving and decision-making skills, self-control, goal setting, efforts to strengthen oneself, and plan.

PURPOSE: This study examined the incidence, location, and characteristics of sports injuries according to the position in Korean female national field hockey athletes. METHODS: Eighteen female national field hockey athletes (two goal keepers, five forwards, six midfielders, and five defenders) who trained at the national training center between January 2018 and December 2018 were enrolled. The event, position, and location of injury were recorded per IOC's daily injury reports form. The incidence of sports injuries was examined with the 95% confidence interval (CI), and the difference in the incidence of injury according to the position was presented as the rate ratio (RR). Moreover, differences in the location of sports injury according to the position were examined using χ2 tests. RESULTS: A total of 92 sports injuries occurred among field hockey players, with an incidence of 6.47 cases per 1,000 hours of training (95% CI 4.98-7.96). In addition, 29.12 cases of injuries occurred per 1,000 exposures (95% CI 23.17-35.07), and the incidence of injury was highest among the defenders, followed by forwards, midfielders, and goal keepers. The most common location of sports injury was the lower extremity, followed in order by the trunk, upper extremity, head, and neck, and there were significant differences in the location of the sports injury according to the position (p=.046). In addition, lumbar spine/lower back, thigh, ankle, lower leg, knee, and foot/toe were common sites of sports injury among female field hockey players. CONCLUSION: These results provide a baseline for predicting sports injuries in athletes during games, and would provide useful information for developing performance enhancement and injury prevention programs.

PURPOSE: This study examined the incidence, location, and characteristics of sports injuries according to the position in Korean national Kabaddi athletes. METHODS: Twenty-four national Kabaddi athletes (12 males and 12 females) who trained at the national training center between January 2019 and December 2019 were enrolled in this study. The event, position, and location of injury were recorded on an IOC daily injury report form. The incidence of sports injury was examined with the 95% confidence interval (CI), and the difference in the incidence of injury by position was presented as the rate ratio (RR). Moreover, the differences in the location of sports injury according to position were examined using χ2 tests. RESULTS: One hundred and nine sports injuries occurred among Kabaddi players, with an incidence of 20.28 cases of injuries per 1,000 exposures (95% CI 16.47 - 24.08), and the incidence of injury was the highest among the competition, followed by training and weights. The most common location of sports injury was the lower extremity, followed by the upper extremity, trunk, head, and neck. In addition, no significant differences in the locations of the sports injuries were noted according to gender (p = .689). Furthermore, knee, ankle, lumbar spine/lower back, shoulder/clavicle were common sites of sports injury among Kabaddi players. CONCLUSION: These results provide a baseline for predicting sports injuries occurring in athletes during games, and would provide useful information for developing performance enhancement as well as injury prevention programs.
This study was conducted to investigate the relation between visual analogue scale and recovery time with type of injury that occur in elite wrestling athletes. The incidence rate of injury was analyzed the Poisson ratio, and the VAS and recovery time according to the type of injury were compared using the one-way ANOVA. In addition, the VAS and recovery time were examine the relationship using the Simple Linear Regression, and statistical significance level was α =.05. Injuries occurred most commonly in the ligament, followed by the muscle, cartilage and tendon. The VAS and recovery time according to the type of injury was statistically significant (p=.001, p=.001, respectively). The VAS and recovery time according to the type of injury was statistically significant (p=.001, p=.001). Also, increase in VAS of 1 point was associated with about 1.89 recovery time. These studies are expected to be useful as basic data for return to sports and safe training.

Materials and Methods: Fifty-two athletes who got the injury in the 2011 Gyeongju World Taekwondo Championship competition were included in this sturdy. 950 members of national team of 146 countries participated in this game, 1,063 matches were performed. We analyzed the characteristics of the injuries such as injury rate by gender, age, weight class, injured region and injury type. Results: Fifty-two athletes of 950 athletes in 1,063 matches got injured and injury rate was 5.47 per 100 participants and 24.47/1,000 athlete-exposures. Injury rate of female athletes was higher than mail, but there was no significant statistical difference (p=0.512). Injury rate of over 30 years old was 17.39 per 100 participants, and injury rate of over 87 kg in male weight class and 68 to 73kg in female weight class were highest than other groups, but there was no significant statistical difference (p=0.838). Overall injury rate of the lower extremity was 13.17/1,000 A-E, higher than upper extremity or head and neck or trunk, but injury rate of the hand was 5.17/1,000 A-E, highest as a specific injured region, followed by the knee, 4.70/1,000 A-E (p=0.714). Injury rate of the sprain was 10.81/1,000 A-E, highest as an injury type, the second most common injury type was the fracture, 5.40/1,000 A-E in men, and was the contusion, 9.63/1,000 A-E in women (p=0.033). As one of the most serious injury, 4 of 8 fractures were occurred in hand. Conclusion: Overall injury rate of the elite Taekwondo players in 2011 Gyeongju World Taekwondo Championship was 5.47 per 100 participants and 24.46 per 1,000 athlete exposures. Although the most common type of injury was the sprain of the knee and ankle, the fractures were more commonly occurred in hand.
This study is to evaluate the availability of cardiorespiratory fitness measurement by 20 m shuttle run test based upon energy contribution rates of elite athletes in different sports type. Sixty-seven elite athletes attending K national university participated in this study. They were divided by three groups based upon sports type, composed of Anaerobic Group (sprint, jumps, weightlifting, throw; n=35), Aerobic Group (medium-long distance; n=9), and Combat Sport Group (judo; n=23). 20 m shuttle run test was conducted by Leger et al.(1982) method and calculating acceleration using measured shuttle run repetitions was conducted by Brewer et al.(1988) method. To test the usefulness of VO2max, graded exercise treadmill test was conducted and standing long jump and 50 m run were measured as power fitness factors. Z-jump was used for measuring power, agility, and muscular endurance. Standing long jump and 50 m run of Anaerobic Group (AnG) was significantly higher than that of Aerobic Group (AeG) and Combat Sport Group (CG) (p<0.05). However, Z-jump of CG was significantly higher than that of AnG and AeG(p<.05). There was a higher correlation of 20 m shuttle run test and VO2max in AnG(r= 0.577, p<.0001) and CG(r= 0.760, p<.0001). Otherwise, there was a low correlation of 20 m shuttle run test and VO2max in AeG. There was no significant group difference to test the availability of 20 m shuttle run test and there was a reduced error when converting 20 m shuttle run results into VO2max. This study examined the usefulness of 20 m shuttle run test by converting 20 m shuttle run repetition results into VO2max calculation, which showed reduced error. Therefore, this study confirmed that it would be needed to convert 20 m shuttle run results into VO2max for universal and practical use in the field without dividing sports type.
This study sought to reduce the risk of fractures in elite youth taekwondo athletes to find out the relationship between bone mineral density which are used as indicators of early diagnosis of osteoporosis and cardiorespiratory functional capacity which is an indicator of performance and sports injury the harmful to athletes. The Pearson product-moment correlation was performed to investigate the correlation between bone mineral density, cardiorespiratory functional capacity, and sports injury. The bone mineral density and cardiorespiratory functional capacity, sports injury were examined the relationship using the Simple Linear Regression. The bone mineral density were correlated with the ventilation (r=.388), and VO2max (r=.478). Bone mineral density was correlated with sports injury (r=-.292). When the bone mineral density increased by .002 and .006, the ventilation (p=.001) and VO2max (p=.006) increased by about 1. In addition, when the bone mineral density decline by .016, the sports injury increased by about 1. Improving athletes' bone mineral density can prevent sports injury, and it can be used as a sports injury prevention program in the future.
