This study was conducted to investigate the existance of dormancy in newly collected tubers of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi from paddy fields and to determine the effect of various growth regulators on the bud sprouting and tuberization of E. kuroguwai. The maximum percent sprouting of E. kuroguwai collected at every month during winter was less than 60% regardless of varied collection tunes until 50 days after incubation, suggesting the presence of dormancy in E. kuroguwai tubers. This dormancy was markedly broken as the time went by, probably due to the exposure of tubers the extremly low temperature. The treatment of $BA10^{-3}M$ and $BA10^{-3}+GA10^{-6}M$ increased bud sprouting about 10 and 11 times, respectively, than that of the untreated control indicating that BA seems to be one of the most effective agents among the growth regulators used on the bud sprouting of E. kuroguwai. Foliar application of BA increased tuberization of E. kuroguwai by an average of 34.4% as compared with the untreated control. The highest increase, 39.8% was obtained with BA treatment at $10^{-5}M$.
This study was conducted to investigate the tuberization time and the control method for Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. The control methods were compared the shoot cutting and bentazon treatment for E. kuroguwai with untreatment. The initial tuberization time of E. kuroguwai, when E. kuroguwai was planted and without rice planted, was about August 18th and 10th, respectively. When the shoot of E. kuroguwai was cut, the regrowth vigour scarcely revived for the cutting on September 12. The least tuberization of E. kuroguwai, when E. kuroguwai was just planted and planted with rice plant, were on August 28 and August 3 to the top cutting of E. kuroguwai, respectively. Bentazon treatments from July 19 to August 3 hardly induced tuberization of E. kuroguwai, while as the delay of bentazon treatment time the tuberization of E. kurguwai was little by little increased.

In rice agriculture, Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi (olbanggae) is a target for herbicidal intervention as a problem weed although it has also long been used clinically as a traditional medicine for jaundice, fever, and blood flow. E. kuroguwai has been evaluated in many clinical trials, but its molecular biological advantages are still unknown. Here, we investigate the anti-inflammatory effects of E. kuroguwai 80% ethanol extracts by screening NO production in LPS-induced macrophage activation. To find the most effective fractions, we partitioned five sub-fractions using HP20 column chromatography, namely 20%, 40%, 60%, 80%, and 100%. Of these, the 60% and 80% sub-fractions were found to significantly inhibit NO production; there were no toxicological effects at any concentration. In addition, the 80% sub-fraction inhibited significantly the iNOS and the mRNA of the pro-inflammatory mediators IL-6, TNF-α, and IL-1β by inhibiting the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK pathways associated with MAPKs signaling. Our results suggest that the 80% E. kuroguwai sub-fraction has the most significant anti-inflammatory effects of inhibiting iNOS and pro-inflammatory mediators and suppressing the phosphorylation of JNK and ERK. Therefore, the 80% sub-fraction of E. kuroguwai extract may be a therapeutic candidate for inflammatory diseases associated with the overexpression of MAPKs.

Field and pot experiments were conducted to investigate seedling emergence and early growth of Eleocharis kuroguwai panted on different dates. Non-linear regression analyses of observed data against effective accumulated temperature (EAT) with the Gompertz model showed that the Gompertz model works well in describing seedling emergence and early growth of E. kuroguwai regardless of planting date and soil burial depth. EATs required for 50% of the maximum seedling emergence of E. kuroguwai planted at 1, 3 and 5 cm soil burial depth in the pot experiment were estimated to be 54.5, 84.0 and $118.0^{\circ}C$, respectively, and $56.7^{\circ}C$ when planted at 1 cm in the field experiment. EATs required for 50% of the maximum leaf number of E. kuroguwai planted at 1, 3 and 5 cm soil burial depth in the pot experiment were estimated to be 213.3, 249.0 and $291.6^{\circ}C$, respectively, and $239.5^{\circ}C$ when planted at 1 cm in the field experiment. Therefore, models developed in this study thus predicted that if rotary tillage with water is made on 27 May under $+2^{\circ}C$ elevated temperature condition, dates for 50% of the maximum seedling emergence, 5 leaf stage and 5 cm plant height of E. kuroguwai buried at 3 cm soil depth were predicted to be 2 June, 10 June and 12 June. These dates are 1 day earlier for the seedling emergence and 3 days earlier for the early growth as compared with current temperature condition, suggesting that earlier application of herbicides is required for effective control of E. kuroguwai.
This experiment was conducted to understand the environmental factors affecting growth and tuber formation such as temperature, day length, tight intensity, water condition and cutting time of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi. Plant height, shoot number and dry weight of E. kuroguwai were higher at high temperature, 25/$25^{\circ}C$ (day/night), while nitrogen content was higher at low temperature, 20/$15^{\circ}C$. Plant height was more affected by water temperature, while shoot number and dry weight were more affected by air temperature. Contents and absorption of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in top parts of E. kuroguwai were higher under greater difference between air and water temperatures, i.e., 18/$28^{\circ}C$ and 28/$18^{\circ}C$. The number and weight of tubers were increased under greater difference between air and water temperatures, i.e, 18/$28^{\circ}C$ and 28/$18^{\circ}C$, while they were inhibited at low or high air/water temperatures (18/$18^{\circ}C$ or 28/$28^{\circ}C$). Tubers of E. kuroguwai were formed at 8-or 12-hour day length, however, no tuber was formed at l6-hour day length. Photoinductive period for tuber initiation of E. kuroguwai was between 30 and 45 days after emergence, and the induction period of short-day treatment was less than 10 days. Tuber number and weight were reduced by shading due to inhibition of the growth of top and underground parts. Number of days from planting to tuber initiation was shortned as planting time was delayed and plant height, dry weight, and tuber number were also reduced by delayed planting. Tuber number at l0 to 15cm water depth was decreased 63 to 75% as compared with 1 to 5cm water depth. Tuber number and dry weight were not affected by the size of tubers at planting. Due to the reduced growth of top and underground parts, tuber number and dry weight of E. kuroguwai were decreased by delayed shoot cutting. The critical cutting time to inhibit the growth of E. kuroguwai was about 70 days after emergence.
This experiments was conducted to investigate the dormancy of Eleocharis kuroguwai tuber in the earth and the influence of seeding time and depth on the emergence of Eleocharis kuroguwai. The tuber of Eleocharis kuroguwai on underground was formed the most amount between 10cm and 15cm layer and formed the second a lot of tuber in the soil layer between 5cm and 10cm, the third between the surface of the earth and 5cm, the least between 15cm and 20cm. The total mean emergence of tuber was 78%, and the dormant tuber was approximately 22% of total tuber formed during a year in the earth. The distribution of dormant tuber under the ground was about 42% between 15cm and 20cm, 39% between 10 cm and 15cm, 14% between 5cm and 10cm, and 5% between the surface of the earth and 5cm. The dormancy percent of tuber formed at each soil layer was about 60% between 15cm and 20cm, 21% between 10cm and 15cm, 12% between 5cm and 10cm, and 7% between the surface of the earth and 5cm. The emergence days of the tuber seeded at low layer was short, and the emergence rate was high, The tuber was formed much more on seeding at May 30th than June 30th.

This study was carried out to determine distribution and tuberization characteristics of tubers of water chestnut(Eleocharis Kuroguwai Ohwi) which is a dominant weed species and diffult to control during 1993 to 1994. By early planting of E. kuroguwai tubers, more and heavier tubers were developed, but the tubers were tended to distribute at the upper soils. Large proportion of tubers was remained at the upper 0 to 10cm soil layer and a few tubers were formed below 20cm. Tubers developed earlier tended to be at deeper layer, while later developed tubers were at upper layers. Tuber weight was increased from the surface to 20cm soil depths, but that formed below 20cm was almost same. No tillage resulted in more tuber formation which were distributed at upper soil layers when compared to conventional tillage. Cool water irrigation pumped from ground water resulted in less tuberization but smaller tubers when compared to control. Shading with color cellophan films resulted in smaller tuber formation with lower in sprouting percentage. Among the films tested, the most significant effect was obtained with green color.
Some biological characteristics with respect to tuber formation of Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi were investigated. Tuber formation was initiated at the descending time of daily maximum and minimum temperatures, accelerated under the minimum temperature lower than $20^{\circ}C$, and terminated at about $10^{\circ}C$. Tubers produced at the early season were located at deeper soil layers. Large tubers were found at deeper soil depths and required the longer period for sprouting as compared with small tubers. Percent emergence decreased as the emergence depth increased, while percent old-tuber produced during previous years was greater at the deeper depths.
The experiment was conducted to evaluate weeding effect and to inhibit tuberization of Eleocharis kuroguwai authority by single or systematic applications of several herbicides. E. kuroguwai was controlled above 90 percentage by pretilachlor and butachlor+bensulfuron application at 5-10 DAT(Days after transplanting) followed by bentazon at 50 DAT and weeded 88 percentage by mefenacet+bensulfuron application at 15 DAT. Tuberization inhibition rate of E. kuroguwai was higher at the application of butachlor+bensulfuron at 5 DAT followed by bentazon at 50 DAT than any other applications. The weight variation of E. kuroguwai tubers formed at 15-20cm soil stratum was larger than that at 10-15cm. Tuber of E. kuroguwai was hardly formed at top soil stratum (0-5cm) and deep soil (15-20cm) by the systematic application of bentazon at 50 DAT. Grain yield of rice from systematic application with bentazon at 50 DAT and mefenacet+bensulfuron at 10-15 DAT was similar to that of hand weeded plot.

Sedge family is second largest family in the Korean flora with more than 240 taxa, following Aster family (about 300 taxa). Although high species diversity, a very limited number of taxa has been utilized for ethnobotanical usages. In the study, previous researches on Cyperaceae ethnobotanical information are documented and analyzed for future research directions on the taxa. A total number of seven taxa has been used for medicinal, food, and material purposes: Carex boottiana Hook. & Arn., Cyperus amuricus Maxim., Cyperus esculentus L., Cyperus exaltatus Retz., Cyperus rotundus L., Eleocharis kuroguwai Ohwi, and Bolboschoenus maritimus (L.) Palla. Underground parts such as tubers are used with medicinal purpose, and aboveground portions such as leaves and stems provide materials for various tools and foods for people and animals. They are all native to Korea, except C. esculentus, which is introduced from Mediterranean areas for anti-erosion materials. The ethnobotanical value of C. esculentus has been well recognized from ancient times, for example, starch grains in USA (excavations at the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation) and Tiger nut milk (Horchata de chufa in Spain). Among material sources, C. exaltatus has a long history in the Korean peninsula from Three Kingdoms of Korea (57 BC~668 AD). C. rotundus is distributed widely in Asia, Africa, Europe, and America, and utilized for medicines, food, and materials. In addition, Eleocharis kuroguwai is only one taxon utilized for ethnobotanical uses among fifteen Eleocharis Korean native species. The number of species with ethnobotanical uses is small in sedge family, but the family has long been utilized accompanying long human history. Cyperus papyrus L., the source of papyrus paper (Egypt in the Nile Delta), is also a member of sedge family. Sedge family has contributed to human societies in various aspects but, the cultural, botanical, ecological values of family members have been underestimated.
