We investigated perceptions and image analysis on scientists studying small organisms reflected in elementary student's drawing using a modified version of the Drawing-A-Scientist-Test. The participants were 530 of fifth and sixth graders consisted of 449 ordinary students and 81 science gifted students. The data were collected from associated words, images and explanatory notes depicted by students engaged in questionnaires. The results indicated that a larger number of students reminded small sized animals and/or plants as words associated with small organisms. In addition, some students depicted anthropomorphic or abstract microorganisms. In this study, more stereotypes of scientists' appearance were exhibited at sixth graders and city region group. Most of the students depicted indicators such as lab coat, glasses, scientific instruments for observing, indoor, male and young, whereas only a few students depicted collaborative work. There was statistically significant difference between girls and boys, because boys perceived male scientists only, while half of girls depicted female. More frequent research instruments and scientific captions were used when science gifted students depicted scientists studying small organisms. These results could be contributed to education on microorganisms in elementary science.
This study explores how elementary school students construct food pyramid prediction models using scientific reasoning. Thirty small groups of sixth-grade students in the Kyoungki province (n=138) participated in this study; each small group constructed a food pyramid prediction model based on scientific reasoning, utilizing prior knowledge on topics such as biotic and abiotic factors, food chains, food webs, and food pyramid concepts. To understand the scientific reasoning applied by the students during the modeling process, three forms of qualitative data were collected and analyzed: each small group's discourse, their representation, and the researcher's field notes. Based on this data, the researcher categorized the students' model patterns into three categories and identified how the students used scientific reasoning in their model patterns. The study found that the model patterns consisted of the population number variation model, the biological and abiotic factors change model, and the equilibrium model. In the population number variation model, students used phenomenon-based reasoning and relation-based reasoning to predict variations in the number of producers and consumers. In the biotic and abiotic factors change model, students used relation-based reasoning to predict the effects on producers and consumers as well as on decomposers and abiotic factors. In the equilibrium model, students predicted that "the food pyramid would reach equilibrium," using relation-based reasoning and model-based reasoning. This study demonstrates that elementary school students can systematically elaborate on complicated ecology concepts using scientific reasoning and modeling processes.

The purpose of this study is to find out the relation between co-cognitive factors, personal affective and characteristic features as the basis that prompts talented behaviors and leadership. The subjects of the study were 77 elementary mathematically gifted students attending at the gifted education center affiliated with University of Education in D metropolitan city and 110 elementary students in metropolitan city and provinces. The results of this study are as follows. First, elementary mathematically gifted students had higher levels than general students in every subdirectory of co-cognitive factors and the difference was statistically significant. Second, there was a difference between leadership of elementary mathematically gifted students and that of general students. Also, the level of gifted students' leadership was higher than the latter. Third, when it comes to the relation between co-cognitive factors and leadership, both of gifted students and general students showed positive correlation between subdirectory of co-cognitive factors and that of leadership. Consequently, development of co-cognitive factors will lead to improvement of leadership since co-cognitive factors positively influence on leadership. Therefore, it is desirable that co-cognitive factors are considered when developing a program for leadership.
School adjustment of elementary school children is one of the most important things, sinceitisthebasisofthefuturelife. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parent-child relationship, peer relationship, teacher-child relationship, and school adjustment of elementary school students. The research topics of the present study were as follows: (1) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the parent-child relationship? (2) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the peer relationship? (3) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the teacher-child relationship in school? (4) Is the school adjustment of elementary school students different depending upon the grade, and sex? 460 students were sampled in Kangwon-do, and 400 were used in the final data analyses, excluding 60 due to the incomplete answering. Parent-child relationship inventory, peer relationship inventory, teacher-child relationship scale, and school adjustment scale were used. Data were analyzed using SPSS(win) 10.1K. The results were as follows: First, elementary school students adjust themselves to the school better when parent-child relationship, peer relationship, and teacher-child relationship are good. Second, teacher-child relationship has the most important effects on the school adjustment, and peer relationship, and parent-child relationship sequentially. Third, 4th graders adjust to the school better than the 6th, and there is no difference between boys and girls in terms of school adjustments. Based on the above results, discussion and implications for the future research and education were as below: First, teachers need to understand children's school adjustments depend upon their human relationships especially upon teacher-student relationships. Second, teachers need to understand students have more difficulties in adjusting to the school when they grow older. Third, teachers have to keep the children positive peer relationship, and parent-child relationship which are important in children's adjusting to the school. Fourth, future researches need nation-wide sampling and more systematized research design in order to generalize the results.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the understanding of the sighting and hearing elementary school students have through drawing. For this purpose, we conducted a questionnaire survey of 602 elementary school students. The questionnaire was composed with open-ended question developed by West et al.(2008). This questionnaire was presented only appearance of face. And let them express the sensory pathway by drawing and writing. The students' responses for questionnaire were classified by 5 levels. Inner-researcher consistency was 0.89, inter-researcher consistency was 0.83. The data analyzed were ${\chi}^2$ by using SPSS. The result of this study were as following: First, elementary school students have misconception of sighting and hearing. There were no difference among the grade. In spite of becoming upper grade, students have still misconception. Second, scientific concept that male students have were significantly more than female. Third, the concepts of the anatomically organs are more exposed in real-life situations, students known better. Within these results, it would be used for developing teaching-learning strategies which can use misconceptions students have.
Based on the importance of visual representation for scientific understanding, this study applied visual thinking in elementary science classes. This study analyzed elementary students' visual thinking and investigated the instructional influences. Students' perceptions on the class applying visual thinking were also investigated. The subject were 38 fourth grade students, 18 in experimental group and 20 in control group. For the unit of 'Shadow and mirror', on-line and off-line blended classes were applied in both group because of COVID-19. The experimental group student were asked to construct their own visual thinking, while the control group students used traditional workbook. The results were as follows. First, students' visual thinking can be classified into three different types, which are 'activity recall type', 'result summary type', and 'core concept representation type' based on what they represent rather than how they represent. Second, applying visual thinking in science class showed significant effects on science academic achievement, science related attitude, and creative academic efficacy. Third, students' perceptions on applying visual thinking in science classes were very positive. Students perceived visual thinking activities were interesting and helpful for understanding science. The purpose of this work is to investigate pre-service elementary teachers' belief in science gifted education. To do that, from September to November 2012, this research had been conducted with 42 students who were in the third year of P University of Education. The conclusions of this work are presented as follows: First, the pre-service elementary teachers considered exploration ability to be the most important talent for the gifted students in science, and chose task commitment as the next most important. They regarded intelligent ability and leadership ability as the relatively less important. Secondly, regarding the most important tool in choosing scientifically gifted students, the pre-service elementary teachers preferred creativity test. It was found that they considered the intelligence test and academic achievements, which require intelligent ability, to be the less important. Thirdly, regarding the special knowledge related to science gifted education, the pre-service elementary teachers considered pedagogical knowledge about the gifted to be the most important. Fourthly, regarding a class type for gifted students in science, the pre-service elementary teachers most preferred project learning. Project learning is a learning method in which students choose an interesting problem and solve the problem in cooperation with group members. It is the most widely used exploration class in gifted education. It is in the same context as the result that exploration ability is the most important factor to elementary gifted students in science. This work revealed that, with regard to a talent for the gifted in science, judgment of the gifted in science and science gifted education, the potential ability and affective ability of gifted students are considered to be more important than their intelligent ability. Therefore, it was analyzed that pre-service elementary teachers' belief in the gifted students in science is almost consistent with the recent trend of gifted education.
