  • The purpose of ths study is to compare and analyze the sequence of teaching multiplication facts in the elementary school mathematics. Generally, the multiplication in the elementary school mathematics is composed of the followings; concepts of multiplication, situations involving multiplication, didactical models for multiplication, and multiplication strategies for teaching multiplication facts. This study is focusing to multiplication facts, especially to the sequence of teaching and multiplication strategies. The method of this study is a comparative and analytic method. In order to compare textbooks, we select the Korean elementary mathematics textbooks(1st curriculum~2009 revised curriculum) and the 9 foreign elementary mathematics textbooks(Japan, China, Germany, Finland, Hongkong etc.). As results of comparative investigation, the sequence of teaching multiplication facts is reconsidered on a basis of elementary students' mathematical thinking. And the connectivity of multiplication facts is strengthened in comparison with the foreign elementary mathematics textbooks. Finally multiplication strategies for teaching multiplication facts are discussed for more understanding and reasoning the principles of multiplication facts in the elementary school mathematics.

  • In this paper, the format of the Korean 2011 & the Japan 2008 elementary school mathematics curriculum are compared especially centered on elements, areas, objectives, and lesson time numbers. Through this comparison, suggestions can be obtained as follows. First, grade-group system which does not meet the actual elementary mathematics education needs to be reconsidered. Second, the area name 'number and operation' needs to be reduced into the area name 'number and calculation'. Third, using the area name 'pattern' needs to be reconsidered. Fourth, using the area name 'probability' needs to be reconsidered. If 'possibility' which some event occurs is seen as ratio, it can be contained area 'quantity relationship'. Fifth, containing the nature of mathematics into the school mathematics objectives needs to be reconsidered. Sixth, it is necessary to enhance the phase of mathematics in elementary education.

  • The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument for measuring elementary school students' environmental literacy. The process of instrument development was four phases. The first two phases involved defining the domain of the construct, writing an initial pool of 55 items, and reviewing the items for revision and deletion. These steps were taken to provide the evidence of content-related validity, and to reduce a number of items. The third phase was, through item analysis, to determine the most appropriate items for the environmental literacy for the elementary school students. For the forth phases, the fifth and sixth students in elementary school participated in this survey. To examine the reliability and validity of environmental literacy for the elementary school students, internal consistency estimate, and factor analysis were used. The results of this study were summarized as follows; Firstly, thorough factor analysis, we developed Environmental Literacy Instrument for the elementary school students, consisted of total 41 items (knowledge 8 items, emotion 11 items, skill 10 items, and behavior 13 items); Secondly, Cronbach's alpha was .783 for knowledge, .832 for emotion, .866 for skill and 8.61 for behavior.

  • The purpose of this study is to discover and develop any implications which may arise in relation to science teachers' professional growth and development by investigating the difficulties experienced by elementary school teachers in science classes. 196 elementary school teachers were requested to write an anecdotal report regarding their science lessons. 30 science teachers in middle school also answered the same questionnaire. By means of inductive categorical analyzing, the difficulties were grouped into several categories. The results were as follows: (1) The difficulties elementary teachers experience in their science lessons fall into three categories; 'professional science knowledge(9.8%)', 'science laboratory activities(78.3%)', 'teaching methodology(11.2%)'. (2) Science teachers in middle school experienced similar difficulties. However, distribution differed from that of elementary school teachers; 'professional science knowledge(39.0%)', 'science laboratory activities(35.6%)', 'teaching methodology(27.1%)'. (3) The causes of these difficulties were identified as follows; a lack of time to prepare for science classes, insufficient substantial pre-service teacher education, and a lack of adaptive support to elementary school teachers.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching by using Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). A survey was administered to 178 elementary school teachers in Seoul, Gyeonggi province, and Gangwon Province. It was found that elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching for four science subjects (physics, chemistry, biology, and earth science) were more 'teacher-centered' than 'student-centered'. The results may imply that elementary school teachers' beliefs of science teaching tend to be more traditional than constructive. Therefore, there is a need to develop an effective education system for pre- and in-service elementary school teachers based on constructivism.
