Rigid-Viscoplastic Finite Element Analysis of Piercing Process in Automatic Simulation of Multi-Stage Forging Processes (다단 단조공정의 자동 시뮬레이션 중 피어싱 공정의 강점소성 유한요소해석)

  • In this paper, an application-oriented approach to piercing analysis in automatic forging simulation by the rigid-viscoplastic finite element mehtod is presented. In the presented approach, the accumulated damage is traced and the piercing instant is determined when the accumulated damage reaches the critical damage value. A method of obtaining the critical damage value by comparing the tensile test result with the analysis one is given. The presented approach is verified by experiments and applied to automatic simulation of a sequence of 6-stage forging processes.

  • In this study, the design simulation for optimal wire batch around service line was made to improve the dielectric strength at the primary winding using Finite Element Method. The automatic convergence algorithm for finding of limit object value using loop circulation method was developed to make the optimal design simulator. The modulation method was suggested to make division time faster which was very important for full simulation efficiency. As a result, the simulation time was reduced and the optimal wire batch design was obtained.

  • We conduct finite element simulation of a cross-wedge rolling process using AFDEX 3D. The die is realistically modeled with emphasis on the hatched plicate over the slope or forming region. Coulomb frictional law is used to prevent slip between material and die. Constant shear frictional law is also investigated and it is esmphasized that the constant shear frictional law is improper for cross-wedge rolling simulation.

  • This paper suggests a fracture simulation method for SFR metallic fuel pin under accident condition. Two major failure mechanisms - creep damage and eutectic penetration - are implemented in the suggested method. To simulate damaged element, stress-reduction concept to reduce stiffness of the damaged element is applied. Using the proposed method, the failure size of cladding can be predicted in addition to the failure time and failure site. To verify the suggested method, Whole-pin furnace (WPF) test and TREAT-M test conducted at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) are simulated. In all cases, predicted results and experimental results are overall in good agreement. Based on the simulation result, the effect of eutectic-penetration depth representing failure behavior on failure size is studied.

  • In this study, the progressive failure behavior of the composite fan blade dovetail element under tensile loading is numerically investigated through finite element(FE) simulation. The accuracy of prediction by FE simulation is verified through tensile testing. The dovetail element is one of the joints for coupling the fan blade with the disk in a turbofan engine. The dovetail element is usually made of a metal material such as titanium, but the application of composite material is being studied for weight reduction reasons. However, manufacturing defects such as drop-off ply and resin pocket inevitably occur in realizing complex shapes of the fan blade made by composite materials. To investigate the effect of these manufacturing defects on the composite fan blade dovetail element, we performed numerical simulation with FE model to compare the prediction of the FE model and the tensile test results. At this time, the cohesive zone model is used to simulate the delamination behavior. Finally, we found that FE simulation results agree with test results when considering thermal residual stress and through-thickness compression enhancement effect.

  • The unsymmetric finite element formulation has been proposed recently to improve predictions from distorted finite elements. Studies have also shown that this special formulation using parametric functions for the test functions and metric functions for the trial functions works surprisingly well because the former satisfy the continuity conditions while the latter ensure that the stress representation during finite element computation can retrieve in a best-fit manner, the actual variation of stress in the metric space. However, a question that remained was whether the unsymmetric formulation was variationally correct. Here we determine that it is not, using the simplest possible element to amplify the principles.

  • The 2nd forming process of flanging/hemming has recently many interest because it determines external quality of automobile. It is difficult to apply finite element simulation in flanging/hemming due to small element size which needs for expression of bending effect on the die corner and big model size of side door, back door, tank lid and like opening Parts. This paper shows the process of flanging/hemming simulation using finite element model for automotive panels. The explicit finite element program PAM-STAMP$\^$TM/ was used to simulate the flanging and hemming operations.

  • This paper presents a study on rotor asymmetry caused by broken bars and its effects on the stator current of an induction machine under an unbalanced supply voltage. The simulation of the induction machine is based on the finite element method. In the early stage of diagnosis, we show new sidebands specific to the partial rupture of the rotor bar. Experimental tests corroborate with the simulation results.

  • In this paper, a computer simulation technique for the forging process having a floating die is presented. The penalty rigid-plastic finite element method is employed together with an iteratively force-balancing method, in which the convergence is achieved when the floating die part is in force equilibrium within the user-specified tolerance. The force balance is controled by adjusting the velocity of the floating die in an automatic manner. An application example of a three-stage cold forging process is given.

  • The free sintering of metallic powders blended with non sintering inclusions is investigated by the Discrete Element Method (DEM). Each particle, whatever its nature (metallic or inclusion) is modeled as a sphere that interacts with its neighbors. We investigate the retarding effect of the inclusions on the sintering kinetics. Also, we present a simple coarsening model for the metallic particles, which allows large particles to grow at the expense of the smallest.
