  • New $4^{th}$ generation synchrotron facility, XFEL, is almost similar to previous $3^{rd}$ generation synchrotron facility in the view of radiological aspects and most important positions are a dump and synchrotron radiation beam line. In this paper, tile radiation protection solutions for them and undulator are suggested and discussed.

  • In this review paper, I'd like to introduce the basics of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and some of my results taken at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory (PAL), the only synchrotron radiation in South Korea. The results show that ARPES is very useful, in particular, for studying two-dimensional materials. It looks like a microscope in momentum space similar to transmission electron microscope imaging atoms in real space.

Conceptual design of hybrid target for molybdenum-99 production based on heavywater

  • Molybdenum-99 (99Mo) is used for preparing Technetium-99 m (99mTc), which is the most widely used isotope in nuclear medicine. In this work, a study for 99Mo production based on a high-power electron accelerator has been performed as an alternative approach to produce 99mTc. In this study, Monte Carlo MCNPX2.6 code has been used to examine a novel idea of simultaneous hybrid production of 99Mo via both photoneutron and neutron capture reactions using an electron accelerator in heavy water tank. It is expected that this conceptual design including an arrangement of metallic plates of 100Mo and 98Mo produces total activity of 97.5 Ci at the end of 20-h continuous e-beam irradiation (30 MeV, 10 mA).

Phase identification of $C_3N_4$ in CN films prepared by rf plasma chemical vapor deposition and dc magnetron sputtering

  • We prepared $C_3N_4$ films by rf plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition(PCVD) and alternating $C_3N_4$/TiN composite films by dc magnetron sputtering. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron diffraction (TED) revealed that the structure of the films is amorphous or polycrystalline, depending on deposition conditions and heat treatment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy confirmed the presence of $sp_3\; and sp _2$ hybridized C atoms bonded with N atoms in the tetrahedral and hexagonal configurations, respectively. Graphite-free $C_3N_4$ films were obtained by PCVD under optimal conditions. To prepare well crystallized $C_3N_4$ films by magnetron sputtering, we introduced negatively biased gratings in the sputtering system. CN films deposited at grating voltages (Vg) lower than 400V are amorphous. Crystallites of cubic and $\beta$-$C_3N_4$ were formed at increased voltages.

Chemisorption and orientation of Selenopheneon Si(100)-$2{\times}1$

  • We have investigated adsorption of selenophene on Si(100) at room temperature using high resolution photoemission spectroscopy (HRPES) and near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) in the partial electron yield (PEY) mode. The Si 2p, C 1s, Se 3d spectra of selenophene on Si(100) show that selenophene is nondissociatively chemisorbed on Si(100)-$2{\times}1$ through [2+2] cycloaddition. NEXAFS has been conducted to characterize the adsorption geometry of selenophene on Si(100). Since the $\pi^*$ orbital of C=C bond show good angular dependence in carbon K-edge NEXAFS spectra, the angle $53{\pm}5^{\circ}$ determined from NEXAFS spectra. This majority structure is consistent with the [2+2] cycloaddition of selenophene to the dimer of the Si(100)-$2{\times}1$ surface.

MCNP6 코드를 이용한 컨테이너 보안 검색용 전자 선형가속기 표적에서 발생한 광자 평가에 관한 연구 (A Study on Photon Characteristics Generated from Target of Electron Linear Accelerator for Container Security Inspection using MCNP6 Code)

  • 본 연구 목적은 선형가속기를 통해 입사된 전자가 표적(target)을 구성하는 물질과 두께에 따른 광자 특성을 평가하는 것이다. 전산모사 설계는 2 mm 두께의 텅스텐 단일물질과 1.8 mm 와 2.3 mm 두께의 텅스텐과 구리 복합물질로 구성된 선형가속기 표적(Target)이다. 연구 방법은 첫째, 표적 내 일차 입자의 거동은 전자플루언스와 전자 에너지 축적으로 평가하였다. 둘째, 표적 내에서 발생하는 광자는 광자 플루언스로 평가하였다. 셋째, 표적으로부터 1 m 거리에서의 광자 각-에너지 분포는 광자 플루언스로 평가하였다. 그 결과 첫째, 단일물질과 복합물질 표적에서의 전자 플루언스와 에너지 축적을 통해 일차 입자인 전자가 표적 밖으로 방출되지 않았으며, 표적 두께에 따라 전자가 음의 선형적으로 감쇄하였다. 둘째, 복합물질 표적이 단일물질 표적보다 광자 생성이 더 높은 것으로 나타났다. 이는 물질 구성 성분과 두께가 광자 생성에 영향을 준다는 사실을 확인하였다. 셋째, 차폐 해석에 필요한 각 분포에 따른 광자 플루언스를 계산하였다. 이러한 결과는 선형가속기 표적을 구성하는 물질과 두께에 따라 광자 생성률이 차이 나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 따라서, 본 연구는 국가에서 도입 중인 컨테이너 보안 검색용 선형가속기 사용시설의 설계 및 운영 시 필요한 자료이며, 방사선 방호에 기초 자료로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 생각된다.

  • Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were grafted with acrylic acid by a preirradiation method by using electron beam accelerator. The effect of irradiation dose, storage time, concentration of acrylic acid, reaction temperature, reaction time and Mohr's salt concentration on the degree of grafting were investigated in detail. The grafted Polypropylene nonwoven fabrics were characterized using IR spectroscopy and SEM. The results showed that the degree of grafting increased with increasing absorbed dose and the Mohr's salt in the acrylic acid solution promoted grafting efficiency.

6MV Photon Beam Commissioning in Varian 2300C/D with BEAM/EGS4 Monte Carlo Code

  • The Monte Carlo simulation method is a numerical solution to a problem that models objects interacting with other objects or their environment based upon simple object-object or object-environment relationships. In spite of its great accuracy, It was turned away because of long calculation time to simulate a model. But, it is used to simulate a linear accelerator frequently with the advance of computer technology. To simulate linear accelerator in Monte Carlo simulations, there are many parameters needed to input to Monte Carlo code. These data can be supported by a linear accelerator manufacturer. Although the model of a linear accelerator is the same, a different characteristic property can be found. Thus, we performed a commissioning process of 6MV photon beam in Varian 2300C/D model with BEAM/EGS4 Monte Carlo code. The head geometry data were put into BEAM/EGS4 data. The mean energy and energy spread of the electron beam incident on the target were varied to match Monte Carlo simulations to measurements. TLDs (thermoluminescent dosimeter) and radiochromic films were employed to measure the absorbed dose in a water phantom. Beam profile was obtained in 40cm${\times}$40cm field size and Depth dose was in 10cm${\times}$10cm. At first, we compared the depth dose between measurements and Monte Carlo simulations varying the mean energy of an incident electron beam. Then, we compared the beam profile with adjusting the beam radius of the incident electron beam in Monte Carlo simulation. The results were found that the optimal mean energy was 6MV and beam radius of 0.1mm was well matched to measurements.

MCNPX를 이용한 선형가속기의 6 MeV 전자선에 대한 에너지분포 계산 (Calculation of Energy Spectra for 6 MeV Electron Beam of LINAC Using MCNPX)

  • 본 연구에서는 MCNPX 코드를 사용하여 6 MeV 전자선의 에너지분포를 계산하였다. 이를 위하여 선형가속기(ML6M; Mitsubishi, Japan)의 헤드를 모델화하였다. 전자선의 초기에너지 분포는 가우시안으로 가정하였으며, 이 때 평균에너지는 측정과 계산으로 구한 $R_{50}$과 공기중 선량프로 파일을 평가하여 결정하였다. 결정된 빔 변수를 적용하여 선형가속기 헤드속 주요 위치에서의 전자선 에너지분포를 계산하였다. 어플리케이터 출구에서의 광자에 대한 에너지분포를 이용하여 깊이선량률에서 오염광자의 영향을 분석하였다.
