  • In this study, electrochemical characteristics variation and removal efficiency with initial pH and mineral compositions during electrokinetic remediation of lead contaminated soils were investigated. Test results showed that heavy metal transportation affected by soil characteristics and electrochemical characteristics varied during electrokinetic remediation. Therefore, in the application of enhanced electrokinetic remediation technique to increase removal efficiency, discrete selection of enhanced technique with characteristics of targeted soil were needed.

  • In case of applying electrokinetic remediation, magnitude of electric current is one of major factors for estimation of contaminant transport. In practice, electric current provide determination of electric conductivity based on specimen resistance. Electric current variation is produced during Electrokinetic remediation test. Electric current is decreased by expotential function according to time in condition of constant voltage. This can be interpreted as precipitation effect by OH$^{-10}$ generation in a cathode.

  • Surfactant-enhanced electrokinetic (EK) remediation is an emerging technology that can effectively remove hydrocarbons from low-permeability soils. In this study, the electrokinetic remediation using Calfax 16L-35 was conducted for the removal of phenanthrene from kaolinite. An anionic surfactant Calfax 16L-35 was used at concentrations of 5, 15, and 30g/L to enhance the solubility of phenanthrene. When the surfactant solution was applied to EK system, low electrical potential gradient was maintained because of its ions. Even when the surfactant concentration was high, the removal efficiency of phenanthrene was low After the operation, most of surfactants were remained in soil and there were few in effluent. This phenomena was observed because the migration of Calfax 16L-35 from cathode to anode was predominant over electroosmotic flow which moved in opposite direction. Therefore, the anionic surfactant Calfax 16L-35 is considered to be improper in surfactant - enhanced electrokinetic remediation.

  • In this study, electrokinetic remediation equipment was used to remove cesium (Cs) from clay soil and waste solution was treated with sorption process. The influence of electrokinetic process on the removal of Cs was evaluated under the condition of applied electric voltage of 15.0-20.0 V. In addition to monitoring the Cs removal, electrical current and temperature of the electrolyte during experiment were investigated. The removal efficiency of Cs from soil by electrokinetic method was more than 90%. After electrokinetic remediation, Cs was selectively separated from soil waste solution using sorbents. Various adsorption agents such as potassium nickel hexacyanoferrate (KNiHCF), Prussian blue, sodium tetraphenylborate (NaTPB), and zeolite were compared and KNiHCF showed the highest Cs removal efficiency. The Cs adsorption on KNiHCF reached equilibrium in 30 min. The maximum adsorption capacity was 120.4 mg/g at 0.1 g/L of adsorbent dosage. These results demonstrated that our proposed process combined electrokinetic remediation of soil and waste solution treatment with metal ferrocyanide can be a promising technique to decontaminate Cs-contaminated fine soil.

  • In this study, electrokinetic remediation tests were performed with spiked fine-grained soil by phenanthrene which is representative hydrophobic organic contaminant of petroleum hydrocarbon. And also, the enhanced method was used with surfactant concentration variation and elapsed time to achieve more higher removal efficiency than conventional electrokinetic treatment. In conventional electrokinetic treatment, most phenanthrene was not transported. But, in the enhanced method used by the surfactant, phenanthrene moved form anode to cathode region and accumulated in cathode region. Also, the transportation rate of phenanthrene was increased with surfactant concentration increasement and elapsed time.

  • The original pilot-scale electrokinetic equipment suitable to soil contamination characteristics of Korean nuclear facility sites was manufactured for the remediation of soil contaminated with uranium. During the experiment with the original electrokinetic equipment, many metal oxides were generated and were stuck on the cathode plate. The uranium removal capability of the original electrokinrtic equipment was almost exhausted because the cathode plate covered with metal oxides did not conduct electricity in the original electrokinetic equipment. Therefore, the original electrokinetic equipment was improved. After the remediation experience for 25 days using the improved electrokinetic remediation equipment, the removal efficiency of uranium from the soil was 96.8% and its residual uranium concentration was 0.81 Bq/g. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 50 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate the uranium concentration below clearance concentration of 1.0 Bq/g was about 34 days. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 75 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate below 1.0 Bq/g was about 42 days. When the initial uranium concentration of soil was about 100 Bq/g, the electrokinetic remediation time required to remediate below 1.0 Bq/g was about 49 days.

  • In treatment of contaminated ground by electrokinetic remediation, pH control is the main prolllem for enhancinfi remediation efficiency. In this study, analysed pH variation characteristics according to contaminant(Pb$^{2+}$) concentration and estimated remediation efficiency with organic acid to prevent precipitation in cathode due to hydroxide ion occurrence. Because most of transported Pb$^{2+}$ is precipitatecl according as pH is increased at specimen adjacent to cathode reservoir, little magnitude of Pb$^{2+}$ is flowed out of specimen.cimen.

  • During the electrokinetic remediation, direct current applied to a soil-water-electrolyte system derives the variations of fluid transport phenomena in soil-water system and soil-water interface characteristics. Therefore, these variations affect the electrokinetic reaction. In this study, lab-scale electrokinetic remediation tests were performed to characterize the electrical and chemical parameters variation in soil. During the test, voltage gradient, electrical current, zeta potential and pH variations were measured. On the basis of experimental results, computer modeling techniques predicting the variations of these parameters are suggested.

  • The electrokinetic technique has been applied to remove mainly the heavy metal and the ultrasonic technique to remove mainly organic substance in contaminated soil. In this study, the combined electrokinetic and ultrasonic remediation technique was studied far the removal of heavy metal and organic substance in contaminated soils. This study emphasized the coupled effects of electrokinetic and ultrasonic techniques on migration as well as remediation of contaminants in soils. The laboratory soil flushing tests combining electrokinetic and ultrasonic technique were conducted using specially designed and fabricated devices to determine the effect of both of these techniques. A series of laboratory experiments involving the simple, electrokinetic, ultrasonic, and electrokinetic & ultrasonic flushing test were carried out. A soil admixed with sand and kaolin was used as a test specimen, and Pb and ethylene glycol were used as contaminants of heavy metal and organic substance. An increase in out flow, permeability and contaminant removal rate was observed in electrokinetic and ultrasonic flushing tests. Some practical implications of these results are discussed in terms of technical feasibility of in situ implementation of electrokinetic ultrasonic remediation technique.
