  • The interface between the surface of a cathode material and the electrolyte gives rise to surface reactions such as solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and chemical side reactions. These reactions lead to increased surface resistance and charge transfer resistance. It is consequently necessary to improve the electrochemical characteristics by suppressing these reactions. In order to suppress unnecessary surface reactions, we coated cathode material using polypropylene (PP). The PP coating layer effectively reduced the SEI film that is generated after a 4.3 V initial charging process. By mitigating the formation of the SEI film, the PP-coated Li[(Ni0.6Co0.1Mn0.3)0.36(Ni0.80Co0.15Al0.05)0.64)]O2(NCS) electrode provided enhanced transport of Li+ ions due to reduced SEI resistance (RSEI) and charge transfer resistance (Rct). The initial charge and discharge efficiency of the PP-coated NCS electrode was 96.2 % at a current density of 17 mA/g in a voltage range of 3.0 ~ 4.3 V, whereas the efficiency of the NCS electrode was only 94.7 %. The presence of the protective PP layer on the cathode improved the thermal stability by reducing the generated heat, and this was confirmed via DSC analysis by an increased exothermic peak.

  • Recent years, supercapacitors have been attracting a growing attention as an efficient energy storage, due to their long-lifetime, device reliability, simple device structure and operation mechanism and, most importantly, high power density. Along with the increasing interest in flexible/stretchable electronics, the supercapacitors with compatible mechanical properties have been also required. A eutectic gallium-indium (EGaIn) liquid metal could be a strong candidate as a soft electrode material of the supercapacitors because of its insulating surface oxide layer for electric double layer formation. Here, we report the electrochemical study on the charging/reaction process at the interface of EGaIn liquid metal and electrolyte. Numerical fitting of the charging current curves provides the capacitance of EGaIn/insulating layer/electrolyte (${\sim}38F/m^2$). This value is two orders of magnitude higher than a capacitance of a general metal electrode/electrolyte interface.

  • This paper presents a development of interface device for electro-oculogram(EOG) signal and it's application to the wireless mouse of wearable PC. The interface device is composed of five bio-electrodes for detecting oculomotor motion, several band-pass filters, instrumentation amplifier and a microprocessor. we have first analyzed impedance characteristics between skin and a bio-electrode. since the impedance highly depends on human face, it's magnitude differs from person. this interface device was applied to develop a wireless mouse for wearable PC, as a Bio Machine Interface(BMI). Where in the prompt on PC monitor is controlled by only EOG signals. this system was implemented in a Head Mount Display(HMD) unit. experimental results show the accuracy of above 90%.

  • Generation of hydrogen and oxygen gas from water is mostly accomplished by electrolysis. In this report, a scheme is presented regarding the gas generation based on plasmolysis. Unlike electrolysis water dissociation by electrical discharge (plasmolysis) requires a high voltage to cause either electron emission or electron capture, and subsequent ionization of involved molecular species. When electrical discharge is initiated between electrodes separated by water-vapor interface, a very large electric field(~100kV/cm) is developed at the tip of the electrode placed in the vapor phase. It is found that the efficiency of plasmolysis depends on the polarity of the electrode placed in the vapor phase. Also presented is the scheme of hydrogen and oxygen generation by such electrical discharge.

  • The electrochemical spike oscillations at the nickel (Ni) electrode/(0.05M KHC$_{8}$H$_{4}$O$_{4}$) buffer solution (pH 9) interface have been studied using voltammetric and chronoamperometric methods. The nature of the periodic cathodic current spikes is the activation controlled currents due to the hydrogen evolution reaction and depends onthe fractioanl surface coverage of the adsorbed hydrogen intermediate or the cathodic potential. There is two kinds of the waveforms corresponding to two kinds of the cathodic current spike oscillations. The widths, periods, and amplitudes of the cathodic current spikes are 4 ms or 5ms, 151 ms or 302 ms, and < 30 mA or < 275 mA, respectively. The fast discharge and recombination reaction steps are 1.5 times and twice and faster than the slow discharge and recombination reaction steps. The fast and slow discharge and recombination reaction steps are 1.5 times and twice faster than the slow discharge and recombination reaction steps. The fast and slow discharge and recombination reactions corresponding to the fast and slow adsorption sites at the Ni cathode.

  • Dye-sensitized solar cells have a FTO/$TiO_2$/Dye/Electrode/Pt counter electrode structure, yet more than a 10% electron loss occurs at each interface. A passivating layer between the $TiO_2$/FTO glass interface can prevent this loss of electrons. In theory, ZnO has excellent electron collecting capabilities and a 3.4 eV band gap, which suppresses electron mobility. FTO glass was coated with ZnO thin films by RF-magnetron sputtering; each film was deposited under different $O_2$:Ar ratios and RF-gun power. The optical transmittance of the ZnO thin film depends on the thickness and morphology of ZnO. The conversion efficiency was measured with the maximum value of 5.22% at an Ar:$O_2$ ratio of 1:1 and RF-gun power of 80 W, due to effective prevention of the electron recombination into electrolytes.

  • We successfully fabricated OLED(Organic Light Emitting Diodes) with Al cathodes electrode deposited by the DC magnetron sputtering. The effects of a controlled Al cathode layer of an Indium Tin Oxide (ITO)/blended single polymer layer (PVK Bu:PBD:dye)/Al light emitting diodes are described. The PVK (Poly(N-vinylcarbazole)) and Bu-PBD (2-(4-biphenyl-phenyl)-1,3,4-oxadiazole) are used hole transport polymer and electron transport molecule respectively. We found that both current injection and electroluminescence output are significantly different with a variable DC sputtering power. The difference is believed to be due to the influence near the blended polymer layer/cathode interface that results from the DC power and H$\sub$2//O in a chamber. And DC sputtering deposition is an effective way to fabricate Al electrodes with pronounced orientational characteristics without damage occurring to metal-organic interface during the sputtering deposition.

  • Focused Ion Beam (FIB) systems have incorporated versatile nanomanipulators with inherent sophisticated machining capability to characterize the electrical properties of highly miniature components of electronic devices. Carbon fibers were chosen as a model system to test the applicability of nanomanipulators to microscale electronic materials, with special emphasis on the direct current current-voltage characterizations in terms of electrode configuration. The presence of contact resistance affects the electrical characterization. This resistance originates from either i) the so-called "spreading resistance" due to the geometrical constriction near the electrode - material interface or ii) resistive surface layers. An appropriate electrode strategy is proposed herein for the use of FIB-based manipulators.
