Pulse electrochemical micromachining offers significant improvements in dimensional accuracy as compared with conventional electrochemical machining. One primary issue in pulse electrochemical micromachining is to identify and control machining depth as well as interelectrode gap size. This paper presents an identification method for the machining depth by in-process analysis of machining current and interelectrode gap size. The inter electrode gap characteristics, including pulse current, effective volumetric electrochemical equivalent and electrolyte conductivity variations, are analysed based on the model and experiments.
Here I present a formula which converts a constant phase element (CPE) to its equivalent capacitor. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy is capable of resolving a complex electrochemical processes into its faradaic and non-faradaic elements, and the non-faradaic process is frequently described as a CPE in place of a capacitor due to the non-ideality. Being described as a capacitor, the non-faradaic element provides information by its capacitance, but a CPE cannot provide a physical meaning. In order to solve the problem, the CPE has been dealt with as an equivalent capacitor of which the capacitance provides practical information. Succeeding the two methods previously suggested, a new conversion method is suggested in this report. While the previous ones manipulate only the CPE, the new method takes both the CPE and its related resistor into account for conversion. By comparing the results obtained by the three methods, we learn that the results are nearly the same within tolerable ranges, and conclude that any of the method choices is acceptable depending on the conditions of the system of interest.
Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is a unique non-destructive technique employed to analyze various devices in different energy storage applications. It characterizes materials and interfaces for their properties in heterogeneous systems employing equivalent circuits as models. So far, it has been used to analyze the performance of various photovoltaic cells, fuel cells, batteries, and other energy storage devices, through equivalent circuit designing. This review highlights the diverse applications of EIS in fuel cells and specific parameters affecting its performance. A particular emphasis has been laid on the challenges faced by this technique and their possible solutions.
Direct Carbon Fuel Cell(DCFC) is one of new power generation that the chemical energy of solid carbon can be converted into electrical energy directly. At the high temperature, the electrochemical reaction of the carbon takes place and the carbon reacts with oxygen to produce carbon dioxide as followed overall reaction ($C+O_2{\rightarrow}CO_2$). However, in case of using the raw coals as a fuel of DCFC, the volatile matter containing carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen produces at operating temperature. In this study, the electrochemical reaction of Adaro coal was compared with Graphite. This work focused on the electrochemical reaction of two kinds of solid carbon by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy(EIS). The EIS results were estimated by equivalent circuit analysis. The constant phase element(CPE) was applied in Randle circuit to explain an electrode and fuel interface. The correlation between the fuel characteristic and electrochemical results was discussed by elements of equivalent circuit of each fuel.

A specially-built EMM (Electrochemical Micro Machining) / PECM (Pulse Electrochemical Machining) cell, a electrode tool filled with non-conducting material, a electrolyte flow control system and a small & stable gap control unit are developed to achieve accurate dimensions of recesses. Two electrolytes, aqueous sodium nitrate and aqueous sodium chloridc arc applied in this study. The farmer electrolyte has better machine-ability than the latter one because of its appropriate changing to the transpassive state without pits on the surface of workpiece. It is easier to control the machining depth precisely by micrometer with pulse current than direct current. This paper also presents an identification method for the machining depth by in-process analysis of machining current and inter electrode gap size. The inter electrode gap characteristics, inc1uding pulse current, effective volumetric electrochemical equivalent and electrolyte conductivity variations, are analyzed based on the model and experiments.
The power of energy storage devices is characterized by capacitance and the internal resistance. The capacitance is measured on an assumption that the charges are stored at the electrode interface and the electric double layer behaves like an ideal capacitor. However, in most cases, the electric double layer is not ideal so a constant phase element (CPE) is used instead of a capacitor to describe the practical observations. Nevertheless, another problem with the use of the CPE is that CPE does not give capacitance directly. Fortunately, a few methods were suggested to evaluate the effective capacitance in the literature. However, those methods may not be suitable for supercapacitors which are modeled as an equivalent circuit of a CPE and resistor connected in series because the time constant of the equivalent circuit is not clearly studied. In this report, in order to study the time constant of the CPE and find its equivalent capacitor, AC and DC methods are utilized in a complementary manner. As a result, the time constants in the AC and DC domains are compared with digital simulation and a proper equation is presented to calculate the effective capacitance of a supercapacitor, which is extended to an electrochemical system where faradaic and ohmic processes are accompanied by imperfect charge accumulation process.
First of all, we express our deepest sympathies for the passing of Professor Su-Moon Park. In the present paper, an electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), which Professor Su-Moon Park also used frequently for the investigation of electroconducting polymer, is introduced as a recent evaluation tool for a commercially available lithium-ion battery (LIB). The paper surveys how to design equivalent circuits while explaining physical and chemical phenomena in the LIB and how to get more accurate impedance spectra with varying the measuring temperatures. Additionally, a square current EIS (SC-EIS) technique, which we have suggested, is introduced for the larger LIB system as a promising technique for the future.
To date, methods used to assess the interfacial transition zone (ITZ), which represents the boundary between the aggregate and paste inside concretes, have primarily relied on destructive tests, and non-destructive tests has received little attention until recently. This study assessed the interfaces of concretes with lightweight aggregates based on electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) for high-strength concretes and examined the possibility of estimating the compressive strength of concretes through non-destructive testing using EIS. The experimental results revealed that the impedance of the hardened cement increased with increasing compressive strength and aggregate density. In particular, when the results of impedance measurement were displayed as a Nyquist plot, the intercept of the x-axis depicting the effective conductivity was proportional to the compressive strength. Furthermore, an equivalent circuit was selected to interpret the correlation between cement aggregates and impedance. Consequently, the compressive strength was found to increase with the value of the resistances of the electrolyte filled in continuous pores in the cement aggregate. And, the pores formed in the ITZ affect this value. The resistance at the ITZ for different aggregates was also obtained, and it was found that the resistance was consistent with the results predicted by SEM images of the ITZ and correlated with the strength of the concretes. The proposed method can be used as a way to easily determine the strength of cement according to differences in aggregate.

In this study, the electrochemical impedance characteristics of CO2/H2O co-reduction to produce CO/H2 syngas were investigated in a low-temperature single cell. The effect of the operating conditions on the single-cell performance was evaluated at different feed concentrations and cell voltages, and the corresponding electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data were collected and analyzed. The Nyquist plots exhibited two semicircles with separated characteristic frequencies of approximately 1 kHz and tens of Hz. The high-frequency semicircles, which depend only on the catholyte concentration, could be correlated to the charge transfer processes in competitive CO2 reduction and hydrogen evolution reactions at the cathodes. The EIS characteristics of the CO2/H2O co-reduction single cell could be explained by the equivalent circuit suggested in this study. In this circuit, the cathodic mass transfer and anodic charge transfer processes are collectively represented by a parallel combination of resistance and a constant phase element to show low-frequency semicircles. Through nonlinear fitting using the equivalent circuit, the parameters for each electrochemical element, such as polarization resistances for high- and low-frequency processes, could be quantified as functions of feed concentration and cell voltage.
Electrochemical oxidation of ethanol has been studied at nickel and $RuO_2-modified$ nickel electrodes in 1 M KOH using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Equivalent circuits have been worked out from simulation of impedance data to model oxidation of ethanol as well as the passivation of the electrode. The charge-transfer resistances for oxidation of these electrodes became smaller in the presence of ethanol than in its absence. The nickel substrate facilitated ethanol oxidation at $RuO_2-modified$ nickel electrodes. We also describe the Performance of nanosized electrocatalysts of the same composition in comparison to those of the bulk electrodes. The nanosized electrodes were obtained by electrode-positing the alloy from complexed form of these metal ions with fourth and fifth generation polyamidoamine dendrimers.
