  • The effects of anode, cathode, and cooling channels for a Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC) on flow fields have been investigated numerically. Continuous open-faced fluid flow channels formed in the surface of the bipolar plates traverse the central area of the plate surface in a plurality of passes such as a serpentine manner. The pressure distributions and velocity profiles of the hydrogen, air and water channels on bipolar plates of the PEMFC are analyzed using a two-dimensional simulation. The conservation equations of mass, momentum, and energy in the three-dimensional flow solver are modified to include electro-chemical characteristics of the fuel cell. In our three-dimensional numerical simulations, the operation of electro-chemical in Membrane Electrolyte Assembly (MEA) is assumed to be steady-state, involving multi-species. Supplied gases are consumed by chemical reaction. The distributions of oxygen and hydrogen concentration with constant humidity are calculated. The concentration of hydrogen is the highest at the center region of the active area, while the concentration of oxygen is the highest at the inlet region. The flow and thermal profiles are evaluated to determine the flow patterns of gas supplied and cooling plates for an optimal fuel cell stack design.

  • Rubber hoses for automobile radiators are apt to be degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under thermal and mechanical loadings. The aging behaviors of the skin part of the hoses due to thermo-oxidative and electro-chemical stresses were experimentally analyzed. Through the thermo-oxidative aging test, it was shown that the surface hardness IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees) of the rubber increased with a considerable reduction of failure strain as the aging time and temperature increased. On account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin part influenced by the electro-chemical degradation(ECD) test the weight of the rubber hose increased, whereas their failure strain and IRHD hardness decreased. The hardness of the hose in the side of the negative pole was the most deteriorated at the test site of the hose skin just below the coolant surface.

  • Clamp type transferring mechanism for package substrate's wet processes was newly developed instead of conventional roller type transferring mechanism. Clamp type transferring mechanism has the advantages of reducing the panel deflection and of minimizing the contact problem between the panel and the transferring mechanism. Individual clamp of the mechanism has two distinct mechanical functions which are perfectly fixing a panel during the transferring and generating adequate tension for the panel. To determine the mechanical parameters of the clamp, panel deflection simulation was conducted and the result was verified by the panel deflection measurement. Also, fixing angle of a clamp could be determined by the free body force analysis of individual clamp. Finally clamp type transferring mechanism was actually manufactured and the transferring performance was verified during the water spraying condition of the package substrate's wet processes.

  • This paper presents the results of a feasibility study on an impedance-based damage detection technique using thickness modes of piezoelectric (PZT) patches for steel structures. It is newly proposed to analyze the changes of the impedances of the thickness modes (frequency range > 1 MHz) at the PZT based on its resonant frequency shifts rather than those of the lateral modes (frequency range > 20 kHz) at the PZT based on its root mean square (RMS) deviations, since the former gives more significant variations in the resonant frequency shifts of the signals for identifying localities of small damages under the same measurement condition. In this paper, firstly, a numerical analysis was performed to understand the basics of the NDE technique using the impedance using an idealized 1-D electro-mechanical model consisting of a steel plate and a PZT patch. Then, experimental studies were carried out on two kinds of structural members of steel. Comparisons have been made between the results of crack detections using the thickness and lateral modes of the PZT patches.

  • The mechanical responses of multilayered aluminum sheet fabricated by roll bonding, i.e., A1050/A3004 (65% A1050, 35% A3004 by thickness), were investigated via combined experiment and finite element (FE) analysis. The mechanical properties were measured using uniaxial tensile tests in various loading directions for the multilayered sheet. The corresponding tests for individual layers were also conducted. The testing samples were prepared by wire electro discharge machining (EDM). Stress-strain curves and Lankford coefficients of the multilayered sheet were then predicted by FE simulations. The measured mechanical properties of the individual layers were utilized as inputs for the simulation. Two yield functions, i.e., isotropic von-Mises and anisotropic non-quadratic Hill1948, were employed. Predicted results were compared with the experimental data and further discussed.

  • A design approach using a one-dimensional (1D) lumped model was studied and applied to an industrial inkjet printing head design for micro patterning on printed circuit boards. For an accurate analysis, a three-dimensional piezoelectric-driven actuator model was analyzed and its jetting characteristics were applied to 1Danalysis model. The performance of the 1D lumped model was verified by comparing measured and simulated results. The developed 1D model helped to optimize the design and configuration of the inkjet head and could be implemented in the design of multi-nozzle inkjet printing heads to improve the jetting frequency and minimize crosstalk.

  • Analysis of nonlinear stability behaviors of composite magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nano-scale shells have been represented in this reaserch. The shell is assumed to be under a transverse mechanical load. Composite MEE material has been produced form piezoelectric and magnetic ingradients in which the material charactristics may be varied according to the percentages of the ingradients. The governing equations including scale effects have been developed in the framework of nonlocal elasticity. It has been demonstrated that nonlinear stability behaviors of MEE nano-sized shells in electrical-magnetic fields rely on the percentages of the ingradients. Also, the efficacy of nonlocality parameter, magnetic intensities and electrical voltages on stability loads of the nanoshells have been researched.

  • The Micro circular diaphragm (MCD) is the mechanical actuator part used in the micro electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS) that combine electrical and mechanical components. These actuators are working under harsh mechanical and thermal conditions, so it is very important to study the mechanical and thermal behaviors of these actuators, in order to do with its function successfully. The objective of this paper is to determine the thermo-mechanical behavior of MCD by developing the traditional bulge test technique to achieve the aims of this work. The specimen is first pre-stressed to ensure that is no initial deflection before applied the loads on diaphragm and then clamped between two plates, a differential pressure (P) and temperature ($T_b$) is leading to a deformation of the MCD. Analytical formulation of developed bulge test technique for MCD thermo-mechanical characterization was established with taking in-to account effect of the residual strength from pre-stressed loading. These makes the plane-strain bulge test ideal for studying the mechanical and thermal behavior of diaphragm in both the elastic and plastic regimes. The differential specimen thickness due to bulge effect to describe the mechanical behavior, and the temperature effect on the MCD material properties to study the thermal behavior under deformation were discussed. A finite element model (FEM) can be extended to apply for investigating the reliability of the proposed bulge test of MCD and compare between the FEM results and another one from analytical calculus. The results show that, the good convergence between the finite element model and analytical model.
