  • The choice of SMEs between standardization and R&D is one of the strategies of building capabilities for achieving competitive advantages under the liabilities of newness and smallness. This paper provides empirical evidence of Korean SMEs choice between standardization and R&D. We hypothesize two possible impacts of standardization intensity on sales performance; a positive linear and a U-shaped relationship. The analysis of data on 821 Korean SMEs from information and technology, and electricity and electronics industries in 2013 shows an U-shaped relationship between relative standardization intensity over R&D and sales performance.

  • This paper aims to predict Busan's regional product and employment using the logistic regression models and machine learning models. The following are the main findings of the empirical analysis. First, the OLS regression model shows that the main industries such as electricity and electronics, machine and transport, and finance and insurance affect the Busan's income positively. Second, the binomial logistic regression models show that the Busan's strategic industries such as the future transport machinery, life-care, and smart marine industries contribute on the Busan's income in large order. Third, the multinomial logistic regression models show that the Korea's main industries such as the precise machinery, transport equipment, and machinery influence the Busan's economy positively. And Korea's exports and the depreciation can affect Busan's economy more positively at the higher employment level. Fourth, the voting ensemble model show the higher predictive power than artificial neural network model and support vector machine models. Furthermore, the gradient boosting model and the random forest show the higher predictive power than the voting model in large order.

  • Bio-fusion and medical device industry is the multidisciplinary engineering application technology industries, which are fused, such as electricity, electronics, machinery, materials. It aims to improve the quality of human life by using bio-fusion and medical devices, and is an important industry recognition and brand power for the product. However, there is a period that is required from the development of products with technology-dependent industries. Therefore, it is necessary to have continuous effort for industrial investment in research and development at the national level including technical support, institutional support, and human resources.

  • Recently, 4D printing technology has received considerable attention in various industries and research fields including soft robotics, tissue engineering, electronics. In 4D printing process, 3D printed object transforms itself into programmed structure by the input of external energy. Thus, this process requires not only smart materials, capable of changing their properties or features in response to external stimuli such as electricity, temperature, light, etc., but also smart structures, multi-material 3D printing, simulation and so on. In this review, the concept, technical elements and potential of 4d printing are presented.

  • This study investigates the relationships among SMEs' innovation capacity, standardization education activities, and performances. Employing about 900 SMEs in the ICT and electronics electricity industries, this study used regression analysis and examined the effects of standardization education activities on performance and the moderating effect of innovation capacity. The results indicate that standardization education activities positively affect SMEs' production and quality improvement and R&D activity improvement. The results also show that R&D investment ratio moderates the relationship between standardization education and production and quality improvement. This study provides practical insight into why firm managers should pay attention to standardization education and innvation capacity to improve firm performance.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the supporting scenario to promote vocational training in North Korea in terms of cooperation level. To this end, we have embarked on a regional and industry based vocational training program by predicting the political and social situation of North Korea and staging three scenarios systematically. These scenarios were designed originally based on the Futures Group methodology. The first scenario is to establish a technical training center in one area, focusing on the electrical, electronics, and clothing sectors. The second scenario is to set up a pilot campus of vocational training college in one region by selecting the electric, electronic, and automobile industries as its main industries. The third scenario is to establish five vocational training college campuses in North Korea, focusing on electricity and electronics, IT manufacturing, telecommunications, heavy industry, and women-specialized industries. We suggested the followings: First, establishing goals and strategies for North Korean vocational training and establishing road maps. Second, the North Korean vocational training governance system needs to be established. Third, R & D infrastructure for vocational training needs to be established. Fourth, HRD and HRM system in North Korea vocational training field needs to be established. In addition, the role of public and private employment services centers to provide them should be strengthening.

  • In this paper, the effects of large national industrial complexes on the generation of local hazardous substances were analyzed based on their size, industrial characteristics. In Seoul, the proportion of hazardous substances, which adversely affect the atmosphere of the entire city, was much less than that of other regional industrial complexes, centered on knowledge-based industries. On the other hand, other national industrial complexes based on manufacturing industries, such as machinery, metal, electricity, and electronics, were found to have a combination of industry characteristics and logistics and regional characteristics. Overall, it was found that the increase in productivity in large national industrial complexes was not proportional to the increase in hazardous substances throughout the region. In addition, it was also found that in North Gyeongsang Province, which is based on the heavy chemical industry, the percentage of hazardous substances is different from other regions due to the characteristics of the industry.
