Development of Inter-link Converter for Power Transmission between Heterogeneous Systems (이종 계통 간의 전력전달을 위한 Inter-link 컨버터 개발)

  • This paper is about power transfer between heterogeneous systems in zero-energy buildings. Currently, electricity used in buildings, from renewable energy generation power in buildings, consists of alternating current networks. In order to use electricity, alternating current must be converted to direct current, which typically results in a loss of 10%. In order to solve this problem, research is needed to reduce power loss as much as possible by implementing both a DC network and an AC network in a zero-energy building. Therefore, in this paper, an inter-link converter capable of bidirectional power transfer between DC and AC networks applied to zero-energy buildings is developed. The structure of the inter-link converter to be developed was proposed and its feasibility was verified through simulations and experiments.

Economic Evaluation of Transmission Expansion for Investment Incentives in a Competitive Electricity Market

  • With the shift of the electric power industry from a regulated monopoly structure to a competitive market environment, the focus of the transmission expansion planning has been moving from reliability-driven transmission expansion to market-based transmission expansion. In market-based transmission expansion, however, a growing demand for electricity, an increasing number of transmission bottlenecks, and the falling levels of transmission investment have created the need for an incentive to motivate investors. The expectation of profit serves as a motivational factor for market participants to invest in transmission expansion in a competitive market. To promote investment in transmission expansion, there is an increasing need for a systematic method to examine transmission expansion for investment incentives from multiple perspectives. In this paper, the transmission expansion problem in a competitive market environment is formulated from ISO and investors' perspectives. The proposed method uses parametric analysis to analyze benefits for investors to identify the most profitable location and amount for transmission addition. Numerical results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • The demise of the native franchise markets and the emergence of competitive markets in electricity generation service is substantially altering the way that operation and planning activity is conducted and is making it increasingly difficult for market participants such as generation firms to prospect the future electricity markets. Traditional generation expansion planning (GEP) problems which centrally determine the least-cost capacity addition plan that meets forecasted demand within pre-specified reliability criteria over a planning horizon (typically 10 to 20 years) is becoming no more valid in competitive market environments. Therefore, it requires to develop a new methodology for generation investments, which is applicable to the changed electric industry business environments and is able to address the post-privatization situation where individual generation firms seek to maximize their return on generation investments against uncertain market revenues. This paper formulates a new generation expansion planning problem and solve it in a market-oriented manner.

  • In electric Industry, the improvement of load factor by flattening load has been considered to be more important than any other tasks and has received wide concern and interest. Especially while annual peak load had occurred early evening in winter during past decades, but we found the trend has changed so that annual peak load occurred during the daytime in summer since 1981.   • This paper presents a study on the development of the electricity market system and resource adequacy. Recently the market system and the power supply-demand system has limitations of evolution which has to be complementary developed by the changes of the power system environment. In this paper we proposed a fundamental step-by-step progress direction for our electricity market system and the supply-demand system by using the Korean power industry environment and overseas resource adequacy systems.

  • The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is an international environmental treaty to stabilize greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere. In order to fulfil the commitments of the countries in an economically efficient way, the UNFCCC adapted the emission trading scheme in the Kyoto Protocol. If the UNFCCC's scheme is enforced in the country, considerable changes in electric power industry are expected due to the imposed greenhouse gas emission reduction. This paper proposes a game theoretic model of the case when generation companies participate in both competitive electricity market and emission market simultaneously. The model is designed such that generation companies select strategically between power quantity and greenhouse gas reduction to maximize their profits in both markets. Demand function and Environmental Welfare of emission trading market is proposed in this model. From the simulation results using the proposed model the impact of the emission trading on generation companies seems very severe in case that the emission prices are significantly high.

  • The procurement of generation and transmission/Distribution capacity in vertically-integrated electric industry is sufficient by facility construction in suitable time. However, the introduction of competitive electricity market increase the efficiency of availability for facilities and fuels. As a result, long-term capacity procurement is required for stable demand-supply balance since it is expected to maintain their generation capacity at a minimum for profit maximization. In this paper, a new long-term capacity procurement mechanism is proposed, which is able to assure supplemental contribution in competitive electricity market.

  • After electricity power industry restructuring, "Long term power development plan", setting up by government, is replaced by "Basic plan of electricity supply and demand". In this basic plan, one of the most important factors is assessment of appropriate capacity margin. The benefit of GENCO is decided by the market price, and the price is largely affected by the level of reserve margin. As a consequence, appropriate reserve margin is determined by market power. However, Cost Based Pool(CBP) is a limited competitive market, and government policy for supply and demand is very important factor or reserve margin determination. This paper points out issues about existing reserve margin assessment method which is used in basic plan and suggests improved assessment method. In the case study, capacity margin is calculated by proposed assessment method and result shows the advantages of suggested method.

  • This paper presents a new approach for the evaluation of location marginal prices (LMPs) considering demand-side bidding (DSB) in a competitive electricity market. The stabilization of the electric power supply and demand balance is one of the major important activities in electric power industry. In this paper, we present an analytical method for calculation of LMPs considering DSB, which has opportunity to compete with generating units, as England & Wales Pool's DSB scheme[1]. Also, we propose a new approach that LMP considering DSB is divided into three components. The proposed approach can be used for the evaluation of demand-side bidding into the electricity market and the assessment of the influence of DSB on total production costs and LMPs as well as three components.

  • As an electricity industry transforms into a competitive system, an electricity market revolves into a combined market consisting of generation and operating reserve. This paper presents a market model combined by an energy market and an operating reserve market. In a competitive structure, Gencos strive to choose strategic bidding parameters that maximize total profit resulting from an energy market and a reserve market. The primary goal of the paper is to analyze power transactions of generation and operation reserve based on marginal profits and capacity limits at NE(Nash Equilibrium). In case studies, the reserve market and the energy market are compared at the n from the viewpoints of marginal profits, prices and transaction quantities. It is shown that the marginal profit in an energy market is equal to that in a reserve market, and Gencos strategic bidding is greatly influenced by capacity limit.
