  • The acoustic emission automatic detection system is developed to observe tree deterioration phenomena. Applying an alternating voltage of 15(kVnns) toXLPE tree specimens, many pulses of small amplitude are detected when the bush type tree developes branch type and a few pulses of high amplitude prcxluced as branch type propagated to bush type tree. Therefore, it is known that pulses having small amplitude operates as a destructive factor. It is observed that the skewness of the amplitude and the number of average pulses as distribution tendency of three dimension are characteristic quantity of AE pulses. As the trajectory of skewness is farther from the origin on the S-plane, it is more likely to breakdown.

  • This paper analyzes the tree expansion for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) detection in the viewpoint of hardware implementation. The tree expansion is to calculate path metrics of child nodes performed in every visit to a node while traversing the detection tree. Accordingly, the tree-expansion unit (TEU), which is responsible for such a task, has been an essential component in a MIMO detector. Despite the paramount importance, the analyses on the TEUs in the literature are not thorough enough. Accordingly, we further investigate the hardware complexity of the TEUs to suggest a guideline for selection. In this paper, we focus on a pair of major ways to implement the TEU: 1) a full parallel realization; 2) a transformation of the formulae followed by common subexpression elimination (CSE). For a logical comparison, the numbers of multipliers and adders are first enumerated. To evaluate them in a more practical manner, the TEUs are implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process, and their propagation delays, gate counts, and power consumptions were measured explicitly. Considering the target specification of a MIMO system and the implementation results comprehensively, one can choose which architecture to adopt in realizing a detector.

  • A top priority in the design of underwater vehicle is to guarantee the dependability of the electric system because failure of the electrical power supply system is directly related to the life of the passengers. In this paper, we present four kinds of alternative designs to improve reliability of electrical system in underwater vehicle. To reduce the risk and to increase availability of the electrical system, we use the redundancy of the grid structure and power converter. For all design alternatives, we carry out Fault Tree Analysis. Based on the FTA result, we implement RAM simulation to compare the risk and availability for the proposed design alternatives.

  • In this paper, a best-basis selection algorithm that improves the performance of the coding gains and the computational complexity is proposed. The proposed algorithm limits the computational complexity according to the resolved threshold value and decomposes the parent subbands by using the top-down tree search and the relative energy between the parent subbands and the child subbands. For the experiments of the proposed algorithm, the bit-rates, the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and the reconstructed images are presented by using the Quad-tree coder. The result of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of DWT algorithm using the Quad-tree coder for a set of standard test images. In addition, the result of the proposed algorithm is compared to that of JPEG-2000 algorithm and that of S+P algorithm.

  • In this paper, digital watermarking method using quad-tree algorithm and the lowest frequency band is proposed. The proposed algorithm searches the coefficient of the watermark by using quad-tree algorithm and inserts the watermark by the Cox's algorithm. The simulation of the proposed algorithm is implemented about the effect of various weight factors in Cox's algorithm, that of embedding watermark in each subband coefficient (HH, LH, HL), and that of embedding in the lowest frequency band (LL). As a simulation result, the bigger weight factors in Cox's algorithm show strong to noise. The watermarking performance of simultaneously embedding in HH, LH, and HL band is better than that of different cases. In addition, insertion the watermark to the LL band about $30{\sim}60%$ of all watermarks improves the watermarking performance in comparison with the case of not using the LL band.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient sparse signal recovery algorithm referred to as the matching pursuit with a tree pruning (TMP). Two key ingredients of TMP are the pre-selection to put a restriction on columns of the sensing matrix to be investigated and the tree pruning to eliminate unpromising paths from the search tree. In our analysis, we show that the sparse signal is accurately reconstructed when the sensing matrix satisfies the restricted isometry property. In our simulations, we confirm that TMP is effective in recovering sparse signals and outperforms conventional sparse recovery algorithms.

  • Nondestructive methods to check the vitality of trees and to find out internal decay of old-giant trees include the use of electrical resistance, ultrasound transmission time, microdrilling, and infrared thermography etc. Among these, ultrasound transmission offers some advantages compared to others such as it is an entirely nondestructive detection method and it can be applied to very big trees. However, the ultrasound equipment is comparatively expensive and not broadly spread yet. On the other hand, Shigometer is versatile to be applied to check vitality of the tree and find out internal decay. Electrical conductivity of plant tissues is a very useful characteristics to determine the vitality and internal decay of trees. Electrical resistance of cambial area tells about the vitality of a tree and electrical resistance of heartwood reveals discoloration or decay of it. For determination of the vitality of the tree, the standard equation for calibration of measured electrical resistances should be developed by measuring and analyzing electrical resistance from at least 30-40 trees of the same species with that tree. All the factors, especially tree species, diameter of the stem, and temperature, which can altered the electrical resistance of trees, should be taken into consideration in the development of the equation. If the standard equation is developed for old-giant trees that we should conserve, it will be very useful. In addition, periodical and continued measuring of a certain tree will help to determine the condition of the tree by comparing the measurement with accumulated data of the tree. Measuring electrical resistance of wood might not require the standard equation. But it also needs to check electrical resistance of sound wood of the same tree species. If the stems that should be examined is thicker than 40cm, it is better to use the ultrasound measurement combined to Shigometer.

  • Many studies have been done on the application of residual charge measurement in cable degradation diagnosis. In this paper, the behavior of residual charges measured with water-tree degraded XLPE sheets and cable are discussed. At charge injection process, the charge is injected by applying dc voltage as a conventional method, suddenly cut-off ac voltage or impulse voltage. Therefore the residual charge is influenced by the applying process. At charge release process, transient dc current flows when applying ac high voltage and also ac high voltage superimposed to dc low voltage. From the results, new diagnosis method is suggested.

  • Characteristics of tree propagation and fractal dimension in DGEBA/MDA/GN system were investigated. In the GN contents of 0 and 5 phr, tree was not produced. In the GN content of 10 phr, a reversed sigmoidal behaviour was found but in those of 15 and 20 phr, linear behaviors were found. All electrical trees possessed fractal characteristics. Fractal dimensions of epoxy resin system were almost constant with the variation of observation angles. Since dielectric breakdown occurred earlier in the GN content of 20 phr, fractal characteristics of modified epoxy resin system in a particular term couldnt be investigated.
