  • The operational cost for maintaining the superconductivity of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) cables needs to be reduced for feasible operation. It depends on factors such as AC loss and heat transfer from the outside. Effective operation requires design optimization and suitable operational conditions. Generally, it is known that critical currents increase and AC losses decrease as the operational temperature of liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is lowered. However, the cryo-cooler consumes more power to lower the temperature. To determine the effective operational temperature of the HTS cable while considering the critical current and AC loss, critical currents of the HTS cable conductor were measured under various temperature conditions using sub-cooled $LN_2$ by Stirling cryo-cooler. Next, AC losses were measured under the same conditions and their variations were analyzed. We used the results to select suitable operating conditions while considering the cryo-cooler's power consumption. We then recommended the effective operating temperature for the HTS cable system installed in an actual power grid in KEPCO's 154/22.9 kV transformer substation.

  • Grid-connected, large-capacity energy storage systems (ESS) can be used for peak load supply, frequency regulation, and renewable energy output smoothing. In order to confirm the capability of battery ESS to provide such services, 4MW/ 8MWh battery ESS demonstration facility was built in the Jocheon substation on Jeju Island. The frequency regulation technology developed for the Jocheon demonstration facility then became the basis for the 28MW and 24MW frequency regulation ESS facilities installed in 2014 at the Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations, respectively. The operation control systems at these two facilities were continuously improved, and their successful commercialization led to the construction of additional ESS facilities all over Korea in 2015. In seven (7) locations nationwide (e.g., Shin-Gimje and Shin-Gyeryeong), a total of 184 MW of ESS had been commercialized in 2016. The trial run for the new ESS facilities had been completed between April and May in 2016. In this paper, results of the trial run from each of the ESS facilities are presented. The results obtained from the Seo-Anseong and Shin-Yongin substations during a transient event by a nuclear power plant trip are also presented in this paper. The results show that the frequency regulation battery ESS facilities were able to quickly respond to the transient event and trial run of ESS is necessary before it is commercialized.

  • In general, distribution board, panel board and motor control center can be installed over a wide area such as residence of group, building, schools, factories, ports, airports, water service and sewerage, substation and heavy industries that are used to supply converts the voltages extra high voltage into optimal voltage. There are electrical accidents due to rise of contact temperature, loose contact of bus bar, deterioration of the contact resistance, overtemperatue of the bus bars. In this paper, we propose bus bar joints monitoring system with loose connection of bus bar, measuring the joint resistance of busbars and monitoring internal and external heat. The proposed system can be reduced the electrical accidents by maintenance of busbar joints and the temperature of the conductive contact surface of busbars.

  • Current protection-coordination methods use the reverse time characteristics of the T-C curve, which is not effective for a LVDC distribution system because the protective operation time of converters and DC circuit breakers is much faster than AC protection devices. Therefore, an algorithm is proposed for fault-section isolation using the fault current slope to minimize the blackout region and coordinate between converters and protection devices in a rapid and accurate manner. The method deals with the slope characteristics of a fault current, which may depend on the fault location in an LVDC distribution system. Thus, an LVDC distribution system can be operated in a stable manner by isolating the fault section selectively before the shutdown of the main converter using slope characteristics, which change in proportion to the line impedance and fault location. A 1.5-kV LVDC distribution system was modeled to verify the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm using PSCAD/EMTDC. The system is composed of a distribution substation, LVDC converter, and distribution lines. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm is a useful tool for minimizing the fault section in an LVDC distribution system.

  • Since the fire accident of ESS (energy storage system) occurred at Gochang KEPCO Power Testing Center in August 2017, 29 fire cases with significant property losses have occurred in Korea. Although the cause of fire accidents have not been identified precisely, it should be considered battery and PCS (power conditioning system) as well as unbalance issues in the distribution system. In particular, circulating currents in a neutral line of a grid-connected transformer, which can affect a magnetized current, may have a negative effect on the ESS with unintentional core saturation and surge voltages at the secondary side of the transformer. Therefore, this paper proposes the modeling of the distribution system, which was composed of a substation, grid-connected transformer, and customer loads using PSCAD/EMTDC S/W, to analyze the phenomena of circulating current and surge voltages of the transformer with unbalanced currents in the distribution system. This paper presents a countermeasure for a circulating current with the installation of NGR (neutral grounding resistor) in grid-connected transformer. From the simulation results, it is clear that exceeding the circulating current and surge voltage at the secondary side of the transformer can be one of the causes of fire accidents.

  • This paper describes the frequency dependence of the grounding impedance. In order to propose the evaluation method of the transient response of powered grounding systems, the grounding impedances were measured with varying the frequency of incoming currents by way of the variable frequency inverter and band pass filter. The magnitude and phase of the grounding impedance were analyzed in the frequency range of 20 [Hz]∼2.1[kHz]. The grounding impedance were increased with increasing the frequency of the test current. The grounding impedance at the frequency of 2[kHz] in the actual 22.9[kV] substation grounding system was approximately 3 times as large as the 60[Hz] grounding impedance. It was found that the frequency dependence of the grounding impedance is mainly subject to the inductive reactance of the grounding conductors. As a result, it is critical to determine the shape and size of grounding grid reducing the resultant inductance in grounding systems for lightning surge protection.

  • Campus microgrid is designed and built by considering not only power generation but also power consumption management as connected microgrid type because the main goal of the campus microgrid is to save power consumption costs. There are many functions to achieve the goal and they are mainly to use generation-based functions such as islanding operation for peak management and for emergency events. In power distribution operation, Conservation Voltage Reduction (CVR) is applied in order to reduce power consumption. The CVR is defined as a function for load consumption reduction by voltage reduction in order to reduce peak demands and energy consumption. However, application of CVR to microgrid is difficult because the microgrid cannot control a tap of transformer in a substation and the microgrid normally is not designed with phase modifying equipment like a step-voltage-regulator which can control voltage in power distribution system operation. In addition, an impact of the CVR is depended on load characteristics such as a normal load, a rated power, and synchronous motors. Therefore, this paper proposes an application of CVR using linear voltage control based AVR in campus microgrid with power consumption reduction considering characteristics of load and component in the microgrid. The proposed system can be applied to each buildings by a configuration of power distribution cables; and the application results and CVR factor are presented in this paper.

  • Faster, safer and cheaper mailing of the postal matter is essential for surviving in the competitive market of home-delivery service. In the past, the domestic delivery business has been nu by only a few number of companies. But more and more number of companies including medium size ones are participating in the business, and the competition is getting severe. This paper proposes a method to select the optimal location of mail distribution centers that minimally connect the local mail centers of some major cities in Korea using the Steiner Tree theory, which is about connecting a finite number of points with a minimal length of paths and has been used in the distribution system optimization and optimal routing of the transmission lines of the electric power system. By using Steiner Tree theory in finding the best location of the postal delivery hub, we may expect the reduction of transportation cost and the increase of profit, resulting in acquiring the superior position in the competitive delivery business. It is expected that we may use the Steiner Tree theory in finding the best location of the electric power substation for the nott higher EHV(extreme high voltage) transmission network.

  • Capacitor switching is essential for the economic operation and proper voltage control of KOREA electric utility distribution system. Voltage transients produced by capacitor switching (around 2.0 per unit at substation and 2.5 or less per unit at customer site, and lasting less then 1[ms]) do not have the magnitude or duration to interfere with the operation of computers, but they do disrupt the operation of adjustable speed drivers. The result of our research, ASD manufacturers should learn from the computer industry and design products that will operate satisfactory In the electrical envelopment in which they will be placed. In this case history, the inductors on the input to ADSs in order to prevent nuisance tripping from capacitor switching(and other causes within the apartment) proved to be an effective, low-cost solution.
