  • Distributed generation (DG) systems fall in islanding operation when they still in operation even when the main grid is out of electric power Islanding operation is further classified into intentional islanding and unintentional islanding operations. In intentional islanding operation, the DG backs up critical loads while it separates from the main grid on islanding detection. Intentional islanding operation increases utilization of the DG system during the islanding operation. This paper proposes reasonal inverter topology and its control algorithm for seamless transfer of DG systems in intentional islanding operation.

  • During the last three decades power electronics has gone through energetic technical evolution. The technical needs from wide area such as in industrial, commercial, consumer, aerospace and environmental applications have driven the environment favorably for the power electronics. In the future, two extreme technology-expansion trends are expected: one into low power, and the other into very high power. The former is based on the high frequency and the circuit miniature using VLSI circuit and surface mounting aiming for the system-on-chip (SOC) technology. The latter includes the application areas of power utility such as HVDC, FACTS and SVC and large science area of electrophsycal apparatus such as thermonuclear fusion, acclerators, and electric guns. This paper describes the technology status of some major elements which are available today and the key roles of the power electronics from view points of applications. The author would like to take this opportunity to raise discussions about the future technology development trend of power electronics in our country with the fellow power electronics engineers.

  • In this paper presents residential PV system based on battery energy storage system for managing the electric power, a pattern of daily operation considering the load characteristic of the house, the generation characteristic of PV power, and utility power leveling. For apply to control algorithm, we consider the load on monthly power consumption trend and daily usage pattern. As for the control of the proposed system, to increase the conversion efficiency of the PV power, bidirectional converter is used for MPPT and SVPWM inverter. An experimental system is implemented, and some experimental results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed system.

  • There are concern on possible health effects from exposure to electric and magnetic fields. One reflection of this concern is the considerable controversy, delay, and cost increases involved in the construction of utility lines and facilities. To meet such challenges, in this paper we investigated magnetic fields reduction techniqies such as general compaction, in-span compaction, cruciform, vertical, 3way splits phase, and 4way splits phase. As results, we found 1 spacer in-span compaction was appropriate in Korea in view of effectiveness and economy.

  • Recently, electric utility is facing substantially new stream of business environment, such as pressure of business restructuring, competition with private IPPs, diversification of supply-side and demand-side resource options, environmental externalities and uncertainties. Integrated resource planning(IRP) is very useful and powerful approach for solving complex and diversified electricity supply and demand problems. This paper presents a standardized IRP procedure using multi-attribute decision analysis approach. The selection of the most desirable plan is based on multi-attribute trade-off/risk analysis method and score ranking method. As a case study, 50 plans with 12 scenarios are analyzed.

  • The electric power industry throughout the world is undergoing considerable changes from the vertically integrated utility structure to the deregulated market. However, the deregulated electricity market is operated with respect to theory of economical efficiency, and therefore, the system operator requires data with fast contingency ranking for security of the bulk power system. This paper presents fast calculation method for determining contingency ranking using the weather dependant probabilistic risk index(PRI). The probabilistic risk index can be classified into normal weather and adverse weather. This paper proposes calculation method using the probabilistic risk index in determining contingency ranking requiring for security under the deregulated electricity market.

  • Capacitor switching is essential for the economic operation, and proper voltage control of KOREA electric utility distribution system. Voltage transients produced by capacitor switching (around 2.0 per unit at substation and 2.5 or less per unit at customer site, and lasting less then 1ms) do not have the magnitude or duration to interfere with the operation of computers, but they do disrupt the operation of adjustable speed drivers. The result of our research, ASD manufacturers should team from the computer industry and design products that will operate satisfactory in the electrical envelopment in which they will be placed. In this case history, the inductors on the input to ADSs in order to prevent nuisance tripping from capacitor switching(and other causes within the apartment) proved to be an effective, low-cost solution.

The Development of Intelligent Direct Load Control System

  • The electric utility has the responsibility of reducing the impact of peaks on electricity demand and related costs. Therefore, they have introduced Direct Load Control System (DLCS) to automate the external control of shedding customer load that it controls. Since the number of customer load participating in the DLC program are keep increasing, DLCS operators a re facing difficulty in monitoring and controlling customer load. The existing DLCS needs constant operator intervention, e.g., whenever the load is about to exceed a predefined amount, it needs operator's intervention to control the on/off status of the load. Therefore, DLCS operators need the state-of-the-art DLCS, which can control automatically the on/off status of the customer load without intervention as much as possible. This paper presents an intelligent DLCS using the active database. The proposed DLCS is applying the active database to DLCS which can avoid operator's intervention as much as possible. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed system, variable production rules and intelligent demand controller are presented.

  • One of the major challenges confronting a multiservice electric utility is the establishment of the right prices for its services. The key objectives of particular pricing schemes are reasonableness of company earnings, economic efficiency, the responsiveness of supply and of the allocation of sources to the desires of consumers, and maintenance of some degree of competition. This paper proposes a value-based pricing mechanism amenable to the current deregulation situation in electricity market allowing service differentiation. The proposed pricing mechanism can be implemented in a nodal auction model, and can also be applied to direct load control.

  • Up to date, C-0 Finite Element Method which is the means for analyzing electric machinery can not be got the precision magnetic flux density because the magnetic flus density has the discontinuity in the interelement. To supplement this defect, we propose the C-1 finite element method of 9 D.O.F. in this paper. In this method, the vector potential and the magnetic flux density are continuous on the interelement and direction derivative of potential would be an unknown value. We developed the algorithm to apply this method. For examining the utility, we applied this method to analytic model and compared with the result of C-0 Finite Element Method using linear element.
