Application of FESS Controller for Load Frequency Control

  • This paper presents the effect on application of the flywheel energy storage system (FESS) for load frequency control (LFC) of an interconnected 2 area power system. To do this, the control characteristics with the FESS were compared with that of the conventional governor controller. The controller for the FESS control and the governor control used a PID type controller. Both the FESS PID controller and the governor PID controller using genetic algorithm (GA) were designed to optimize the PID parameters. The frequency and generation output characteristics with the only FESS controller and with the only conventional governor controller were compared. To verify robust performance of the FESS controller, the computer simulations were performed under various disturbances. The simulation results showed that the FESS controller provided better dynamic responses in comparison with the conventional governor controller.

Improvement of Demagnetization by Rotor Structure of IPMSM with Dy-free Rare-Earth Magnet

  • Permanent magnet (PM) motors that employ rare-earth magnets containing dysprosium (Dy) are used in electric and hybrid electric vehicles. However, it is desirable to reduce the amount of Dy used since it is expensive. This study investigates the rotor structure of a PM synchronous motor with a Dy-free rare-earth magnet. Flux barrier shapes and PM thicknesses that enhance the irreversible demagnetization are investigated. In addition, a rotor structure that improves the irreversible demagnetization is proposed. We demonstrate that the proposed rotor structure without Dy improves the irreversible demagnetization.

Design, Development and Analysis of Embedded Systems for Condition Monitoring of Rotating Machines using FFT Algorithm

  • Rotating machines are an integral part of large electrical power machinery in most of the industries. Any degradation or outages in the rotating electric machinery can result in significant losses in productivity. It is critical to monitor the equipment for any degradation's so that it can serve as an early warning for adequate maintenance activities and repair. Prior research and field studies have indicated that the rotating machines have a particular type of signal structure during the initial start-up transient. A machine performance can be studied based on the effect of degradation in signal parameters. In this paper a data-acquisition system and the FFT algorithm has been design and model using the MATLAB and Simulink. The implementation had been carried out on the TMS320 DSP Processor and various testing and verification of the machine performance had been carried out. The results show good agreement with expected results for both simulated and real-time data. The real-time data from AC water pumps which have rotating motors built-in were collected and analysed. The FFT algorithm provides frequency response and based on this frequency response performance of the machine had been measured.The FFT algorithm provides only approximation about the machine performances.

A Fast Contingency Screening Algorithm for On-line Transient Security Assessment Based on Stability Index

  • This paper describes a new ultra-fast contingency screening algorithm for on-line TSA without time simulation. All machines are represented in a classical model and the stability index is defined as the ratio between acceleration power during a fault and deceleration power after clearing the fault. Critical clustering of machines is done based on the stability index, and the power-angle curve of the critical machines is drawn assuming that the angles of the critical machines increase uniformly, while those of the non-critical ones remain constant. Finally, the critical clearing time (CCT) is computed using the power-angle curve. The proposed algorithm is tested on the KEPCO system comprised of 900-bus and 230-machines. The CCT values computed with the screening algorithm are in good agreement with those computed using the detailed model and the SIME method. The computation time for screening about 270 contingencies is 17 seconds with 1.2 GHz PC.

Research of Novel Water Cooling Jacket for Explosion-proof Motor

  • The well tightness of the coal mining water-cooling explosion-proof motor results in difficult heat dissipation, high hydraulic pressure is needed to increase the cooling effect. However, high hydraulic pressure may lead motor shell to deform, which makes it difficult to change the motor and maintain the motor unit. The method of adding keyhole caulk weld spots on the outer cooling water jacket was proposed to solve the problem. Based on the elasticity mechanics equations and the principle of finite element method the stresses and the deformations of the traditional and novel outer cooling water jacket were calculated separately. A hydraulic pressure experiment of the both cooling water jackets was constructed. Obviously, the stress and the deformation of the novel cooling water jacket are lower. The experimental result is consistent with the simulation results. It is effective to reduce the stress and the deformation of the cooling water jacket by adding the keyhole caulk weld spots.

Braking Torque Closed-Loop Control of Switched Reluctance Machines for Electric Vehicles

  • In order to promote the application of switched reluctance machines (SRM) in electric vehicles (EVs), the braking torque closed-loop control of a SRM is proposed. A hysteresis current regulator with the soft chopping mode is employed to reduce the switching frequency and switching loss. A torque estimator is designed to estimate the braking torque online and to achieve braking torque feedback. A feed-forward plus saturation compensation torque regulator is designed to decrease the dynamic response time and to improve the steady-state accuracy of the braking torque. The turn-on and turn-off angles are optimized by a genetic algorithm (GA) to reduce the braking torque ripple and to improve the braking energy feedback efficiency. Finally, a simulation model and an experimental platform are built. The simulation and experimental results demonstrate the correctness of the proposed control strategy.

Comparison of Dynamic Characteristics between Virtual Synchronous Machines Adopting Different Active Power Droop Controls

  • In modern power systems, high penetration of distributed generators (DGs) results in high stress on system stability. Apart from the intermittent nature of DGs, most DGs do not contribute inertia or damping to systems. As a result, a new control method named virtual synchronous machine (VSM) was proposed, which brought new characteristics to inverters such as synchronous machines (SMs). In addition, different active power droop controls for VSMs are being proposed in literatures. However, they are quite different in terms of their dynamic characteristics despite of the similar control laws. In this paper, mathematical models of a VSM adopting different active power droop controls are built and analyzed. The dynamic performance of the VSM output active power and virtual rotor angular frequency are presented for different models. The influences of the damping factor and droop coefficient on the VSM dynamic behaviors are also investigated in detail. Finally, the theoretical analysis is verified by simulations and experimental results.

  • With the increasing number of power plants in modern electric power systems, power system dynamics studies become more complex. Frequently, only some part of the power system is interesting. So it becomes necessary to reduce the size of dynamics or to introduce the dynamic equivalencing techniques. The major approach of dynamic equivalencing techniques are two: one is coherency approach, which seperates machines in groups and combines machines within each group closely swinging together into one equivalent and the other is modal approach which neglects the fast modes of external system. In this paper, a new dynamic equivalencing approach which seperates machines in coherent groups as the coherency method but doesn't predetermine the structure of the equivalent.

Predictions of Short-Circuit Characteristics of Rotor Windings in a Generator using Electromagnetic Analysis (전자장해석을 통한 발전기 회전자권선 단락특성 예측)

  • As the increasing of capacity and technology of power facilities, rotating machines such as turbine generators and water turbines are getting higher at capacity but smaller in size. Thus the monitoring and diagnosis of generators for fault detection and protection has attracted intensive interest. Most of electrical faults of rotating machines appear in their windings. In case of an after-fault in high capacity rotating machines, the recovering cost is usually very expensive and additional time is necessary for returning in a normal situation. In this paper, the magnetic flux patterns in air-gap of a generator under various fault states as well as a normal state are simulated by a conventional FEM tool. These results are successfully applied to detection and diagnosis of the short-circuit condition in rotor windings of a high capacity generator.
