  • Application of power higher than the optimum operation value to an external electrode fluorescent lamps(EEFL) leads to the formation of small holes, called pinholes, which subsequently leads to lamp failure. The pinholes come from the insulating breakdown of the capacitor which is the dielectric layer between an external electrode and glass tube. The power of insulation breakdown is proportional to the electric power applied to the lamp. When a lamp current is low in the glass tube of dielectric constant K, the dielectric field strength of pinholes is about 3K kV/mm. The field strength of insulation breakdown decreases as the lamp current increases.

  • This paper discusses the principle and structure of instantaneous voltage drop compensator, which protects damage from instantaneous voltage drop in systems such as computer, variable speed drive, high voltage discharge-lamp, magnet switch. When instantaneous voltage drop occurs, control circuits detect it, then produce output voltage the same as normal condition voltage. Instantaneous voltage drop compensator has condenser bank as energy storage component, so system can be made small, light weight compared with UPS. In normal state, utility source transfers power, and in instantaneous voltage drop state, the energy of condenser bank transfers power through inverter, so high efficiency, compact, and especially low cost system can be manufactured.

  • We have developed a photoemission-assisted plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PAPE-CVD) [1,2], in which photoelectrons emitting from the substrate surface irradiated with UV light ($h{\nu}$=7.2 eV) from a Xe excimer lamp are utilized as a trigger for generating DC discharge plasma as depicted in Fig. 1. As a result, photoemission-assisted plasma can appear just above the substrate surface with a limited interval between the substrate and the electrode (~10 mm), enabling us to suppress effectively the unintended deposition of soot on the chamber walls, to increase the deposition rate, and to decrease drastically the electric power consumption. In case of the deposition of DLC gate insulator films for the top-gate graphene channel FET, plasma discharge power is reduced down to as low as 0.01W, giving rise to decrease significantly the plasma-induced damage on the graphene channel [3]. In addition, DLC thickness can be precisely controlled in an atomic scale and dielectric constant is also changed from low ${\kappa}$ for the passivation layer to high ${\kappa}$ for the gate insulator. On the other hand, negative electron affinity (NEA) of a hydrogen-terminated diamond surface is attractive and of practical importance for PAPECVD, because the diamond surface under PAPE-CVD with H2-diluted (about 1%) CH4 gas is exposed to a lot of hydrogen radicals and therefore can perform as a high-efficiency electron emitter due to NEA. In fact, we observed a large change of discharge current between with and without hydrogen termination. It is noted that photoelectrons are emitted from the SiO2 (350 nm)/Si interface with 7.2-eV UV light, making it possible to grow few-layer graphene on the thick SiO2 surface with no transition layer of amorphous carbon by means of PAPE-CVD without any metal catalyst.

  • Filter efficiency of electrically charged particle in uncharged fibrous filter was measured. In previous studies, the effect of charged particle on filter efficiency was investigated but there was difficulty in measuring of image effect that is appeared at the charged small particle. We could easily measure the image effect with charging small particles by photoelectric charging. The spark discharge aerosol generator and a differential mobility analyzer (DMA) were used to generate sub-micron monodisperse particles (${\leq}200$ nm). The generated particles were charged in photoelectric charging process using ultraviolet lamp and electric field. The filter efficiency of the charged particles, classified by another DMA, was measured in filter tester using a condensation nucleus counter (CNC) as function of particle diameter, particle charge and airflow velocity. It is shown that the filter efficiency increases with increasing charge number of the particle and is affected by particle size and flow velocity. Single fiber filter efficiency mainly depends on image force parameter and peclet number. The peclet number was not considered at previous other papers. We propose a modi fied experimental correlation as function of image force parameter and peclet number.

  • In this study, a portable flashlight which can manually generate the electricity by using sunlight was developed so that it can be used in the extreme environmental condition such as no-electricity condition. Battery is charged by using solar battery during the day, but when sunlight is not avalible during the night or rainy day, a handle is rotated to generate the electricity in order to charge the battery manually. To improve the brightness of the light, light is concentrated by using the optical lens. Low electric consumption circuit is used for the longer operating time by suppress electrical consumption while lamp is discharged. A circuit is designed and used for steady electrical curris dand voltage to insure steady battery charging. Super-discharge circuit and protection circuit are used for the super discharge of battery when it is not used for a long time. Also the constant charge is possible by using houseware adapter. As a result, a portable flashlight is designed to charge with sunlight during day, and with houseware adapter during night. A portable flashlight is also designed to irradiate longer distances by improvement of the brightness of the light using the optical lens. Thus, it forms white natural ray of light making possible for night reading.

  • A Photovoltaic power streetlight is a system that uses solar energy to charge a secondary battery and then uses it for night lighting through a lamp, and can be configured as a standalone or grid-connected type by installing an LED streetlight at the load end. The energy generated through the solar cell module can be charged to the secondary battery through the charge/discharge control device, and then the LED street light can be turned on and off by comparing the power generation voltage and the charging voltage according to the monitoring of solar radiation, or by setting a specific time after sunset or sunrise. Based on these contents, this paper designed and manufactured a simulated solar power streetlight for education using new and renewable energy utilization and storage functions. Using these educational equipment, students can 1) understand the flow of energy change using renewable energy including sunlight as electric energy, 2) understand new and renewable energy, and cultivate basic design and manufacturing application power of related products, 3) The use of new and renewable energy through power conversion and strengthening of practical training and analysis through hardware production can be instilled.
