Electric Fan Heater Design for Eco-Energy Saving (친환경 에너지 절감형 전기온풍기 기구설계)

  • As the Eco-energy is recently required, electrical energy is fast increased. Several induction heating methods are attractive for Eco-energy and energy saving. In this paper, electrical fan heater was designed and developed with new concept for energy saving by electromagnetic induction heating. Proposed system was composed of three module, blast part, induction heating part and power transformation part. Induction heating method was adapted for heating and the resonant inverter was used for increasing of the power transformation efficiency. Full-bridge resonant inverter was adopted to resonant inverter. This system was composed of induction heating part made with metal(SUS 40 series), and power transformation part made with rectifier module, filter module and resonant inverter. From these results, the proposed new electric heater could be saved the energy from faster increasing the temperature compared to commercial gas and other electric heater. This electrical fan heater is possible to be used in field of home, commercial and agricultural area for eco-energy saving heater.

  • Demand Controller is a control device that if current electric power consumption seems to exceed the targeted amount of electric power, block the connected load devices. When this ON/OFF way is applied to electric power management of electric furnace, start and stop operation of inverter and an electric heater which supplying electric power is being performed repeatedly. This has a problem of life-shortening of inverter and an electric heater by electrical damage. In addition, when electric power supplying is blocked, attemperation is not allowed until return to normal operation condition. In this paper, we develop power management system for electric furnace using the electric furnace remote controller. This system provides the automatic control for approved electric power to electric furnace organically and prevent electric damage of inverter and an electric heater through continuous electric power supply within the targeted amount of electric power.

  • Urgent increasing of the vehicles influence air pollution and the damage of the plants and animals. Particularly, exhaust-ing particulate of diesel vehicles give serious effect to human life. Therefore, this study aim to reduce amount of particulate and to contribute developing after-treatment in diesel engine. Through the experimental and theoretical study about charac-teristics of the electric heat regeneration, various results are obtained.

Electrical Fire Hazards Analysis of Electric Iron and Heater Using Fault Tree Analysis

  • The primary goal of this study is to analyze fire hazards of electric home appliances such as electric iron and electric heater using fault tree analysis(FTA). A fault tree(FT) is constructed and used to analyze fire hazards in electric home appliances. The fault tree is built from events that may occur in electric home appliances. The failure rate of basic events are derived from the value of experimental results and reference. And an algorithm analyzing fire in electric home appliances is suggested. We show how fault tree analysis, carried out by means of failure rate, is able to diagnose fire hazards of electric home appliances in a precise manner. We present numerical results such as fire probability of electric home appliances, importance measure, fire cause, etc. It can be helpful in preventing the fire hazards in electric home appliances.

  • Recently, the markets of the air conditioner are enlarging. The market size will reach 2.0 billion won in 2000. Electric heat pumps have been utilized as main residential air conditioners. especially in Korea. They cause a surge up electric power demand during summer. Moreover, the use of HCFCs and HFCs causes serious problem to the global environment such as global warming and ozone layer destruction. Absorption chiller and heater could solve such problems. It was built and tested for analyzing the performance of the generator for absorption chiller and heater. Experiment was done with a high temperature generator, a low temperature generator, heat exchangers, a condenser and a solution tank. It was tested that the double effect series flow cycle with two kinds of solution cycle. Solution cycle B showed better than solution cycle A. Two kinds of heat exchanger were used, where one's heat transfer area is bigger than the other. Bigger one increased a little performance of absorption chiller and heater. But it was not economical. From this study, we got that the coefficient of performance(COP) is 0.82 and the capacity is 7.24 kW for an absorption chiller and heater.

  • The electric heat pump requiring HCFCs as a refrigerant has been for most residential air-conditioners in Korea. They cause a surge up electric power demand during summer. Moreover, the use of HCFCs and HFCs causes a serious problem to the global environment such as global warming and ozone layer destruction. An absorption chiller and heater could solve such problems. It was built and tested for analyzing the performance of the absorption chiller/heater. Experiment was done with a 1.5RT household absorption chiller and heater. It was experimented that the cooling capacity, gas capacity, COP were researched by the temperature of cooling water. The change of the cooling water temperature have effect the temperature(or pressure) of the parts on absorption chiller The result of the change of the cooling water temperature have the effects of the absorption chillers. This data will help to operate the household absorption chiller and heater.

  • A Urea-SCR(Selective Catalytic Reactor) system, which converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen and water in the presence of a reducing agent, creates a major exhaust gas aftertreatment system for NOx reduction among other compounds. With regard to vehicle applications, a urea solution was chosen based on its eutectic composition of a 32.5wt% urea-water solution. An important advantage of this eutectic composition is that its melting point of $-11.7^{\circ}C$ is sufficiently low to avoid solidification in cold environments. However, the storage tanks must be heated separately in case of low ambient temperature levels to ensure a sufficient amount of liquid is available during scheduled start ups. In this study, therefore, a numerical investigation of three-dimensional unsteady heating problems analyzed to understand the melting processes and heat transfer characteristics including liquid volume fraction, temperature distributions, and temperature profiles. The investigations were performed using Fluent 6.3 commercial software that modeled coolant and electric heater models based on a urea solution. It is shown that the melting performance with the electric heater is higher than a coolant heater and is more efficient.

Experimental Study for Consolidation by Electric Heating Systems (전기가열장치를 이용한 압밀촉진에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • This study deals with the conventional consolidation methods like preloading and vertical drains. For it, Two different mechanism, i.e., increasing of permeability and evaporating of pore water were studied. The marine clays excavated in Incheon were heated at low temperature($90^{\circ}C$) to increase the permeability. Also, Microwave oven and high-temperature electric heater were used for pore water evaporation. Several points raised from the experiments. To fix them, the electric heating system was revised to upgrade the field application and drain efficiency of pore water, and the marine clays were heated by revised electric heater at high temperature($250^{\circ}C$). From Experimental result showed that results, high-temperature heater induced the pore water evaporation and displayed the excellent consolidation behavior. In addition, the cone index of heated clays were increased about 19 times, which suggested that electric heating system could be applied for ensuring the trafficability of heavy equipments.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate the structural stability of hybrid type fan heater. The evaluation of structural safety of hybrid fan heater was conducted by using Ansys Workbench and CFX-11 under the design condition. The hybrid fan heater was operated by heat transfer for heat source supplied from electric heater and combustion gas. According to result of structural analysis, the maximum equivalent stress of hybrid fan heater was 150MPa when the temperature of heat transfer fluids was $150^{\circ}C$. It was found that the hybrid fan was structurally safe because the value of maximum equivalent stress was smaller than that of yield stress of the material.

  • The TMS(Thermal Management System) heater in a fuel cell vehicle has been developed to prevent a decline of fuel cell durability and cold start durability. Main functions of the COD(Cathode Oxygen Depletion) heater are depletion of oxygen in a cathode as heat energy and consumption of electric power for rapid warming up of a fuel cell stack. This paper covers subjects including the design specification of a heater, heater controller for detection of overheat and reliability assessment including coolant pressure cycle test of a heater. To verify the design concept, burst pressure and deformation analysis of plastic housing were carried out. Also, temperature distribution analysis of heater surface and coolant inside of housing were carried out to verify the design concept. By designing the plastic housing instead of a steel housing, the 30% weight lightening and 50% cost reduction were attained. A module-based design of a TMS system including a heater or reducing the watt density of a heater is a problem to be solved in the near future work.
