Industrial, medical, environment and agriculture application of pulse power technology have been developing rapidly in many field. In order to make use in the form of pulses is applied to the pulse forming technique. At this time, spark gap is generally used for the pulse forming. Spark gap may be possible to simulate the shape of the electrode, to know the uniform or non-uniform electric field of the electrode structure. Further, it can be determined using Paschen's law applied pressure of the insulating gas in accordance with the voltage which is created using the value of the electric field. In this paper, we tried to found using a formula and the simulation process to determine the pressure. The value of the electric field is different according to the shape of the electrode. So, the range of pressure applied also varies. In order to withstand the 100 kV with a gap of 5 mm, the nitrogen gas must be applied to about 7 bar in the electrode structure. On the other hand, in the same conditions, Sulfur hexafluoride gas must be applied to about 2 bar. Consequently, the Sulfur hexafluoride gas has a higher insulation properties than nitrogen gas may be applied to low pressure at the same conditions.

This paper describes dielectric characteristics of $SF_6$ and dry-air gases under lightning impulse voltages in a quasi-uniform electric field. In order to simulate to a quasi-uniform electric field, electric field utilization factor of the used sphere-plane electrode is 71[%]. The gas pressure of $SF_6$ ranges from 0.1 to 0.2[MPa] and that of dry-air ranges from 0.2 to 0.6[MPa]. Electrical breakdown voltages of $SF_6$ and dry-air gases are measured and analyzed as functions of the polarity of lightning impulse voltage and gas pressure. As a result, the electrical breakdown voltage of both gases under the positive lightning impulse voltage is higher than that under the negative one. The electrical breakdown voltage in $SF_6$ is almost higher than 2.67 times compared to dry-air. The results presented in this paper can be used as a useful information to evaluate the capability of alternative insulation gases for $SF_6$ in power distribution equipment with prominent ability against lightning surge.

This paper presents dielectric characteristics of $N_2$ gas under impulse voltages in a quasi-uniform electric field gap. The experiments were carried out at the test gap applied by the 1.2/50[${\mu}s$] lightning impulse voltage, 180/2500[${\mu}s$] switching impulse voltage, 500[ns]/1[MHz] very fast transient overvoltage(VFTO). The gap separation of sphere-to-plane electrodes was 14[mm] and the electric field utilization factor was about 71.2[%]. The gas pressure ranges from 0.2 to 0.6[MPa]. As a result, the electrical breakdowns are occurred by streamer discharge. Breakdown voltages are linearly increased with the gas pressure and the highest breakdown voltage is appeared under the VFTOs having fast rising time. Breakdown voltages under the positive impulse voltages were higher than those under the negative ones, and also the time to breakdown in the positive polarity is longer than that in the negative polarity.
High voltage cryogenic insulation issues need to be addressed in order to promote the commercialization of high temperature superconducting (HTS) equipment. As a fundamental step in the development of the optimum bushings for HTS devices, the breakdown characteristics of liquid nitrogen mixed with liquefied insulating gases such as $N_2$, $SF_6$, and $CF_4$ have been investigated. In order to investigate the possibility of substituting $CF_4$ gas for $SF_6$ gas for the bushings of HTS electrical equipment, AC withstanding voltage tests have been performed. In this paper, finding the maximum electric field $E_{max}$ using utilization factor ${\eta}$. This result is applicable to developing the real scale HTS equipment of the design parameters.
Recent advancements of permanent magnet (PM) materials and solid-state devices have contributed to a substantial performance improvement of permanent magnet machines. Owing to the rare-earth PMs, these motors have higher efficiency, power factor, output power per mass and volume, and better dynamic performance than induction motors without sacrificing reliability. Not surprisingly, they are continuously receiving serious considerations for a variety of automotive and propulsion applications. An electric vehicle (EV) requires a high-effficient propulsion system having a wide operating range and a capability of generating a high peak torque for short durations. The improvement of torque-speed performance for these systems is consequently very important, and researches in various aspects are therefore being actively pursued. A great emphasis has been placed on the efficiency and optimal utilization of PM machines. This requires attention to many aspects related to the machine design and overall performance. In this respect, the prediction of iron losses is particularly indispensable and challenging, especially for drives with a deep field-weakening range. The objective of this paper is to present iron loss estimations of a PM motor over a wide speed range. As aforementioned, in EV applications core losses can be significant during high-speed operation and it is imperative to evaluate these losses accurately and take them into consideration during the motor design stage. In this investigation, the losses are predicted by using an analytical model and a 2D time-stepped finite element method (FEM). The results from different analytical approaches are compared with the FEM computations. The validity of each model is then evaluated by these comparisons.

Korea is highly dependent on foreign countries for energy while at the same time having a high energy-consumption industrial structure. Therefore, logical improvements in energy use efficiency and nationwide energy saving are becoming more and more important in coping with the worldwidehigh oil prices and environmental issues such as listed in the Kyoto Protocol to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Consequently, a study was conducted on the average annual load factor in domestic areas to set a reasonable and reliable technology standard plan for high-efficiency transformers. The average annual load factor in Korea was discovered to be 18.4[%] classified by industry. This factor is expected to be used in arranging a domestic standard for a minimum efficiency system for transformers, and in reviewing and supplementing the standard transformers plan for the High Energy-Efficiency Appliance Certification. The expected effect from the establishment of the technology standards plan for highly efficient transformers is the expansion of the manufacturing and distribution of highly efficient transformers that are suitable for domestic use. These will lead to electricity cost savings for users, strengthening the related industries' market competitive powers and the effective reduction of greenhouse gases on a national level by drastically reducing loss from transformers, which accounts for a large portion of the total electric supply losses.

Nowadays, the power quality issue becomes very important in the electric distribution system. Especially, when a distribution transformer is replaced, the customers who are supplied electricity from the transformer feel inconvenience due to electric outage. Therefore, an advanced method for the distribution transformer replacement without outage is strongly required. The conventional method is the primary-secondary high voltage bypass method according to the transformer utilization factor and the field condition. But it is inconvenient and has some problems such as breakdown and security troubles of the workers according to the unauthorized and temporary work. Therefore, the new scheme for the replacement with uninterruptable power supply is demanded. This paper proposes the new replacement method using the phase converter. The proposed method can reduces the process of replacement work and also ensures worker's safety. Therefore, the method is reasonable in comparison with the conventional method. The proposed method is able to contribute the national economy growth and elevate the convenience of national life by uninterruptable power supply.

A liquid nitrogen ($LN_2$) is usually used to be a coolant and insulant for a HTS coil system. HTS wires for a superconducting apparatus may be surrounded by gaseous nitrogen ($GN_2$) due to film boiling generated by a quench or voids occurred by electrical breakdown. The increased maximum electric field intensity at $GN_2$ may result in the degradation of dielectric strength of a HTS coil system. In this paper, a study on the dielectric characteristics of a composite insulation system composed of $LN_2$ and $GN_2$ is performed. A sphere-to-plane electrode system made with stainless steel is used to perform the experiments under AC and lightning impulse voltage condition. A sphere electrode is surrounded by $GN_2$ and a plane electrode is immersed into $LN_2$ to conduct dielectric experiments with a composite insulation system. The dielectric experiments are performed according to the level of $LN_2$ from the plane electrode to a sphere electrode. It is found that the dielectric characteristics of a composite insulation system are dependent on the level of $LN_2$ and the field utilization factor of an electrode system.

The environmental pollution caused by green-house gases such as $CO_2$ and $SF_6$ has been becoming the main issue of industrial society. Many developed countries are making efforts to minimize the amount of $CO_2$ emission come from the operation of high voltage electrical apparatuses. As a part of these efforts, 180 countries signed the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 to cut back on their green-house gas emissions. Nowadays, the study on the development of dry air insulated switchgear (DAIS) which is known as an eco-friendly electrical apparatus is in progress. A DAIS is advantageous for minimizing the effect of impurities and enhancing the dielectric characteristics over an air insulated switchgear (AIS) by applying constant pressure to an enclosed cubicle. Therefore, a study on the electrical insulation performance of dry air as a gaseous insulation medium is conducted in this paper to substitute a gas insulated switchgear (GIS) for DAIS. As results, it is verified that the AC dielectric characteristics of dry air are similar to those of air and the lightning impulse dielectric characteristics of dry air are superior to those of air at 1bar pressure condition. However, dry air is of inferior dielectric characteristics to $SF_6$ at 4bar pressure condition. Finally, it is suggested that the internal pressure of DAIS should be over 4bar pressure to develop a high voltage switchgear which has similar electrical performance to a conventional GIS. Also, the empirical formulae on calculating the maximum electric field intensity at sparkover of dry air are deduced by experiments according to pressures. It is expected that these results are helpful to design and develop a high voltage electrical apparatus.
This study was conducted to obtain a basic information necessary to assess present rice milling technology in Korea The profiles for milling plants was analyzed by survey work. For the private custom-work mills, which process about 80 percent of domestic rice consumption ,their actual milling test for the identical samples as used for filed mills was conducted. Two rice varieties Japonica and Tongil-type were associated with the experiments. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Analyses for private custom-work mills showed their general aspects as; about 91 percent of the mills belonged to an individual owner ship ; more than 93 percent of the mills was established earlier than 1950 ; about 80 percent of the mills was powered with electric motor; mills having less than two employees were about 75 percent; about 45 percent of the mills provided for warehouse in storing customers cereal grains. 2. The polishers installed in 1,255mills within the surveyed area (7 counties) have been supplied by 44 different domestic manufacturers ;in but about 60 percent of which was supplied by 6major manufacturers. The polishers could be classified into two categories in terms of principles of their polishing actions ;jet-pearler and friction types. About 51 percent of the mills was equipped with the former which has been recognized as giving greater milling recovery than the friction types. 3. Reason for owners of private mills to supplement new machines was due mainly to pgrading their mills to meet the requirements that established by the Government. However, about 60 percent of the mill owners intended to replace with new pearler by their own needs to meet with new high yielding varieties. 4. Processing systems of each previate rice mills surveyed could be classified into three categories, depending upon whether the systems posessed such components as precleaner and paddy separator or not. Only 36.7 percent of mills was installed with both precleanr ad paddy seperrator, 5.0 percent of mills did have neither percleaner nor paddy seperator, and rest of them equipped only one of the two. Hence,it is needed for about 63% of rice miils to be supplemented with these basic facilities to meet with the requirements for the standaized system. 5. Actual milling capacity measured at each field rice mills was shown a wide variation, having range from about 190 to 1,210 kg/hr. The percentages of mills classified according to daily milling capacity based on this hourly capacity were 24.3% for the capacity less than 3 M/T a day; 20.0% for 3-4 M/T; 15.6% for 4-5 M/T; 6.7% for 5-6 M/T; 22.3% for 6-7 M/T; and 11.0% for more than 7 M/T a day. 6. Actual amount of rice processed was about 310 M/T a year in average. About 42% of total milled rice was processed during October to Decembear, which formed a peak demand period for rice mills. The amount of rice milled during January to May was relatively small, but it had still a large amount compared to that during June to September. 7. Utilization rate of milling facility, i. e., percentage of the actual amount of milled rice to the capacity of rice mills, was about 18% on the year round average, about 41% in the peak demand season, and about 10% during June to September. Average number of operating days for mills surveyed was about 250 days a year, and about 21 days a month. 8. Moisture contents of paddy at the time of field mill tests were ranged 14.5% to 19.5% for both Japonica and Tong-i] varieties, majority of paddy grains having moisture level much higher than 1530. To aviod potential reduction of milling recovery while milling and deterioration of milled rice while storage due to these high grain mJisture contents, it may be very important for farmers holding rice to dry by an artificial drying method. 9. Milling recovery of JapJnica varieties in rice mills was 75.0% in average and it was widely ranged from 69.0% to 78.0 % according to mills. Potential increase in milJing recovery of Japonica variety with improvement of mill facilities was estimated to about 1.9%. On the other hand, milling recovery of Tong-il varieties in the field mill tests was 69.8% in average and it ranged from 62% to 77 %, which is much wider than that of Japonica varieties. It is noticed that the average milling recovery of Tong-il variety of 69.8% was much less than that of the Japonica-type. It was estimated th3.t up to about 5.0% of milling recovery for Tong-il variety could be improved by improving the present lo'.ver graded milling technology. 10. Head rice recoveries, as a factor of representing the quality of commercial goods, of Japonica and Tong-il varieties were 65.9% and 53.8% in average, and they were widely ranged from 52% to 73% and from 44% to 65% , respectively. It was assessed that head rice recovery of Japonica varieties can be improved up 3.3% and that of Tong-il varieties by 7.0% by improving mill components and systems.
