  • The contact-less inductive power transformer (IPT) uses principle of electromagnetic induction. Generally, there were many methods to improve the transfer performance of traditional transformer. But, though the principle of IPT is similar to that of general transformer, it is impossible to apply the methods because of large air-gap. Consequently, many linear numerical formulas for analysis of performance and design of traditional transformer cannot be used in development of IPT. The concept of the IPT for vehicle like PRT(Personal Rapid Transit) system is suggested and some suggestions for power collector(core & winding) design of IPT to improve power transfer performance arc presented in this paper. The characteristic of power delivery with these novel methods in design is presented by simulation and examination.

  • The coupling between electric, magnetic, and structural order parameters results in the so-called multiferroics, which possess ferroelectricity, ferromagnetism, and/or ferroelasticity. The simultaneous ferroelectricity and ferromagnetism (magnetoelectricity) allow potential applications in information storage, spintronics, and in magnetic or electric field sensors. Perovskite compound $BiFeO_3$ (BFO) is antiferromagnetic below Neel temperature of 647K and ferroelectric with a high Curie temperature of 1043K. It exhibits weak magnetism at room temperature(RT) due to the residual moment from a canted spin structure. It is likely that non-stoichiometry and second-phase formation are the factors which cause leakage in BFO. It has been suggested that oxygen non-stoichiometry leads to valence fluctuations of Fe ions in BFO, resulting in high conductivity. To reduce the large leakage current of BFO, one attempt is fabricating donor doped BFO compounds and thin films. We report here the successful fabrication of the Nd, Ti co-doped $BiFeO_3$ ceramics and thin films by pulsed laser deposition technique.

  • Voltage fluctuation, also known as flicker, is a power quality problem caused by nonlinear loads like electric arc furnace. Since it is interpreted as a variation of the supplied electrical energy, it causes the residential customers to feel much annoyed visually through the lamps. Due to the statistical nature of IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) short-term flicker severity index, Pst, it is not feasible to pre-evaluate the flicker level using the transient power system simulators such as Sim Power System in Matlab/Simulink. So this paper presents not only how to design the Matlab/Simulink IEC flickermeter to yield the Pst value, which considering electric distribution environments of South Korea, but also how to mitigate the voltage flicker at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). In order to achieve this, the flicker mitigation efficiencies of various compensating devices, such as Static Var Compensator (SVC), STATCOM will be applied and compared. The simulated result demonstrates which compensating equipment is the most efficient method to mitigate the flicker phenomenon.

  • ZnO thin films are deposited by using an RF magnetron sputtering system. Structural and electrical properties are analyzed as a function of deposition conditions, such as RF power, Ar/($Ar+O_2$) ratio, and substrate temperature. The c-axial growth of ZnO is observed to be preferable to the $SiO_2$/Si substrate, rather than the Si substrate. By adding the oxygen gas during deposition, the electrical resistivity of films is increased, but the c-axial growth is inhibited. A pizoelectric resonator of Al/ZnO/Al is also fabricated to estimate the electric-mechanical coupling coefficient($k^2$) of ZnO film. The value of $k^2$ obtained from our work is about 10.14 %.

  • Inductive power transfer (IPT) systems have become increasingly popular in recharging electric vehicle (EV) batteries. This paper presents an investigation of a series parallel/series (SP/S) resonant compensation network based IPT system for EVs with further optimized circular pads (CPs). After the further optimization, the magnetic coupling coefficient and power transfer capacity of the CPs are significantly improved. In this system, based on a series compensation network on the secondary side, the constant output voltage, utilizing a simple yet effective control method (fixed-frequency control), is realized for the receiving terminal at a settled relative position under different load conditions. In addition, with a SP compensation network on the primary side, zero voltage switching (ZVS) of the inverter is universally achieved. Simulations and experiments have been implemented to validate the favorable applicability of the modified optimization of CPs and the proposed SP/S IPT system.

  • We investigated the structure of inductive coupler and its magnetic coupling to increase the transmission coefficient for power line communication. A Rogowski coil, which is an air-cored inductive coupler, and a magnetic cored coupler were fabricated to analyze the transmission coefficient for different coupler parameters. This paper proposes the impedance matching method using lumped elements and an impedance transformer to increase the transmission coefficient. In the experiment, the transmission coefficient of the proposed system was increased in both narrowband and broadband cases, and a trade-off between the transmission coefficient and the bandwidth was shown. This method will be useful for the further study of impedance matching with the load variation.

  • This paper presents the result of survey of case study for harmonics in electrical installations of buildings. Recently, many power electronic equipments(power converter, computers, air conditioners electronic ballasts for fluorescent lamps and so on) are used in office buildings, and harmonic current from them influence the other equipments in a distribution line. Notably, voltage distortion or voltage harmonics may approach or exceed is allowable level in power distribution system. Individual electric power consumers and end-users and responsible for reducing current harmonics while companies or utilities are responsible for reducing voltage harmonics at the point of common coupling in distribution system. As for harmonics, which one of the electric power qualities, it becomes important to obtain harmonic voltage/current distribution of the power system precisely because the use of power electronic apparatus in increasing. To suppress harmonics in electrical ins tallations of buildings, one of many methods suggest that resonance frequencies are controlled by modulating the capacities of high-voltage customer's capacitors.

  • Among the alternative energy sources, the solar energy is recognized as an important energy source and its application is increasing. Especially in future, the hybrid solar energy generation system with battery will be widely used as an independent distributed power generation system. In this paper, a solar power hybrid home generation system using a contactless power supply (CPS) that can transfer an electric power without any mechanical contact by using magnetic coupling instead of the power transfer by directly supplying the DC power to the home electric system is proposed. The proposed system consists of a ZVS boost converter, a half bridge LLC resonant converter and contact-less transformer.

  • The Breakdown properties of epoxy composites are used for transformers and sensor, which has been studied. As a result, From the measurements of breakdown voltage, the more hardener is increased the stronger breakdown strength at low temperature because the ester of hardener is increased. Breakdown strength at the high temperature is decreased because the temperature at $110^{\circ}C$ is near at $T_g$. When the filler is added, between epoxy and silica is formed interface. Therefore the charge is accumulated in it, and the electric field is concentrated, and breakdown strength is decreased than non-filled specimens. In the case of specimens, the treated with silane, the breakdown strength becomes much higher since this is suggested that silane coupling agent has been improved chemical bonding in the interfaces and has been relaxed the electric filed concentration.
