Due to the current status of education for the elderly, education for the elderly continues to change and develop, and various programs and activities are provided to help the elderly enjoy a richer retirement life. According to the survey report on the elderly, 11.9% of all elderly people participate in learning activities. Senior welfare centers accounted for the largest number of institutions conducting learning activities for elderly education learning activities participants at 35.5%. First, in the direction of elderly education in the age of science and technology, education on the use of digital technology and information is necessary in the composition of elderly education contents. Second, in the case of elderly education methods, customized elderly education methods are needed. Third, in the case of operating elderly education institutions, specialized education centers for elderly education must be further strengthened and supported. The international community is already forming a consensus that the establishment of new social systems and financial investment due to the increase in the elderly population should be considered a new growth engine rather than a social crisis. Although there is a burden on the social security sector due to the increase in the elderly population, there is a shift in the direction of recognizing the potential capabilities and experiences of the elderly and returning them to social resources. Elderly education in the age of science and technology needs to change to a direction that can build a healthy and progressive society in the future.

  • This paper presents the status of nutrition education for older adults in Korea, and examines considerations in developing effective nutrition education programs for the elderly based on literature reviews. Finally, strategies of nutrition education for older adults in Korea are examined. Status of nutrition education were examined by surveying 90 senior centers, and 46 public health centers providing nutrition services. Most senior centers(96%) provided health education programs, however, nutrition was only a part of health programs. Among the 41 public health centers which responded to the survey, 73.1% provided nutrition education for older adults. The frequently covered topics were prevention & management of hypertension/stroke, diabetes, nutritional management during later adulthood, and osteoporosis. Common barriers in planning and implementing elderly education were; lack of educational materials for older adults, reliance on lectures, difficulty in following-up. To develop effective nutrition education, four stages consisting of needs assessment, planning and implementation of programs, and evaluation should be carefully done. Needs assessment might be done using quantitative or qualitative assessment. Factors influencing nutrition behavior of older adults can be systematically examined using a theoretical approach such as the PRECEDE-PROCEED framework. Qualitative methods, such as focus group interviews, also provide insightful information regarding the needs of older adults. In planning nutrition education programs, physical and pshychological changes associated with aging should be considered. Literature regarding elderly education suggest that active participation or participatory learning is also effective for older adults. Educational materials are developed following the principle of KISS and pre-tested. Program evaluation has been rarely done in practice, although it provides valuable feedback to the program. Strategies for developing nutrition education for Korean elderly include; performing needs assessment, developing a standard program by topics in a logical and systematic way, developing programs for subgroups of elderly, applying diverse education methods developing educational materials for the elderly, evaluating programs using simple tools, and delivering a nutrition program as a part of health promotion program. Finally, the interaction and communication between researchers and practitioners is strongly recommended to ensure better nutrition education and services to the elderly.

  • Purpose: The purposes of this study were to develop an elderly care nursing education program and evaluate its effect on knowledge, attitudes and nursing performance of nurses toward older adults. Methods: A quasi-experimental study with a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used. Participants were recruited from two geriatric hospitals. The sample consisted of an intervention group (n=29) that participated in the educational program and a control group (n=30). The data were collected prior to and 6 weeks after the intervention using self-administered questionnaires. Data analyses utilized $x^2$-test, Fisher's exact probability test, and t-test. Results: After the intervention, knowledge and nursing performance about the elderly care increased significantly in the experimental group compared to the control group. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the groups in their attitudes toward the elderly. Conclusion: Findings indicate that to provide better nursing care to the elderly, nurses need to be able to practically apply the knowledge they have acquired from the elder-care nursing education programs in hands-on situations. To achieve this, nurses should work to change their personal attitudes about the elderly. Also, evidence-based guidelines for elderly nursing care, administrative support of institutions, and multidisciplinary approaches are required.

Methods: This is a quasi-experimental study with a nonequivalent control group non-synchronized design. The participants were 70 elderly patients who had total knee arthroplasty in the C university hospital located in G city, Korea. Thirty-five patients were assigned to an experimental group and the other patients were assigned to a control group. After the total knee arthroplasty, the early exercise education accompanied by watching video instruction was conducted on the experimental group at post-operation second and third day for 15 minutes. General exercise education was administered to the control group. The exercise knowledge and compliance of the elderly patients were measured through structured questionnaires. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that early exercise education using videos has positive effects to improve the exercise knowledge and compliance of elderly patients after total knee arthroplasty. This early exercise education can be used going forward as nursing intervention for elderly patients who undergo total knee replacement surgery.

However, in the case of the elderly, the elderly suffer difficulties in acquiring information technology due to their aging characteristics, so they can not easily adapt to rapidly changing societies. Therefore, it is becoming more and more important to educate the elderly who are trying to adapt to the new environment of knowledge-based society. Therefore, in this study, we analyzed the previous researches of the researchers related to the elderly informatization education and the report of the actual situation of the digital divide of the government, and identified the problems and suggested ways to activate the effective education for the aged. The following suggestions are made to activate information education. First, there is a need for systematic promotion and professional counseling on the need for information education for the elderly learners. Second, the development of various curriculum that can be used in real life. Third, development of customized learning materials. etc. Fourth, Obtain a professional lecturer for the elderly. It is limited to lecturers who have completed teaching and learning methods that reflect the characteristics of the elderly. Fifth, the introduction of qualification certification system that can measure the level of informatization of the elderly learners. Sixth, building e-learning system for elderly people. Seventh, to establish a new organization dedicated solely to information education for the elderly. When these parts are realized, it will help elderly people to improve their quality of life through alleviation of solitude and alienation.
