This study focused on the three key independent variable groups(e.g., socio-demographic, job-related, and individual personality). The sample used in this study are 311 caregivers who are randomly selected from 21 elderly care institutions in Korea. Data were collected with a structured questionnaire by mail from Oct. 15 to Nov. 30 in 2007. The collected data were analyzed using logistic regression. The major findings of the study are as follows: 1) Nearly 40% percent of the respondents reported that they had experienced conflicts with elderly patients. The conflict with other caregivers ranked as second(20.6%), followed by patients' families(18.6%) and hospital employees(15.1%). 2) The personality, especially uniqueness caused conflict with patients or other caregivers. The professional identity reduced conflict with patients. The negative work experiences caused conflict with patients or family. The service attitude reduced conflict with family. The service-centered culture reduced conflict with hospital employees. Those who lived with the elderly showed lower level of conflict with family or hospital employees.

Each of the 54 statements of the questionnaire was considered to be either Positive or Negative. A Positive response was assigned the value of+1 , and a Negative response or no response was assigned the value of O. The results of the study were as follows : 1. The Investigation of attitudes of nurses toward geriatric nursing care. a. Data indicated , respondents have negative attitudes in their. concepts of elderly (74.3%) b. Accordingly, this study aims to investigate the oral health knowledge and attitude of caregivers on oral health management of elderly inpatients, which would affect the general health and quality of life. Methods: A survey questionnaire was distributed to the caregiver(n=165), at a neurosurgery or orthopedic hospital inpatient ward in Seoul, Gyeonggi-do from April 1 to 14, 2017. We analyzed the data with descriptive statistics analysis, chi-squared analysis and logistic regression analysis by using SPSS 23.0. Results: The response rate to the questionnaire was 92%. Oral health management provided by caregivers to inpatients in the elderly was prevention of oral diseases(92.8%), tooth brushing (89.5%), use of oral care products(68.4%), denture cleaning(90.8%) and oral cleaning(90.8%). Frequency analysis of oral health management in accordance with the educational needs of caregivers was all confirmed statistically significant(p<0.05). In the logistics regression model, oral health knowledge was significantly associated with low oral cleaning(OR=1.58) and oral health attitude was significantly associated with high denture cleaning(OR=1.29) and oral cleaning(OR=1.28) after adjustment for other covariates including gender, age, certification, education level, ward, working years. Conclusions: It is necessary to expand the scope and improve the quality of education that can change the attitudes and behaviors of the caregivers on the oral health management of the elderly on the basis of the current oral health education.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide empirical findings about intragenerational and intergenerational discrepancies in eldercare attitude and behavior in Korea. Specifically, intragenerational discrepancies refer to phenomena in which eldercare attitude and behavior diverge from each other within the caregiving and care-receiving generations, respectively. Intergenerational discrepancies, on the other hand, refer to two kinds of phenomena, one in which eldercare attitudes are different between caregiver and care-receiver and the other in which eldercare behavior is differently recognized between the two parties. For the last couple decades, these kinds of discrepancies tended to be simply assumed without any coherent theoretical and/or empirical rationales. Thus, the current study tried to investigate the degree, pattern, and characteristics associated with the discrepancies. Analysis of data collected from 276 matched pairs of caregivers (i.e., daughters-in-law) and care-receivers (i.e., the elderly) in Kwangju and its suburb areas has indicated a substantial amount of both intra- and inter-generational discrepancies. In other words, both caregivers and care-receivers were found to be experiencing huge discrepancies between attitude and behavior in their respective generation: the factual discrepancies in attitude between the two generations were quite salient: the cognitive discrepancies in behavior between them were salient, too. In addition, it was also found' that the extent to which the discrepancies became salient differed for the three subdimensions of eldercare (i.e., emotional, economic, and physical care), and that such discrepancies have intimate relationships with a set of sociodemographic characteristics for caregivers - notably, age, educational attainment, area of residence, household income - on the one hand, and those for care-receivers - notably, gender, age, educational attainment, cohabitation, family size, inheritance, owned property - on the other. A series of theoretical, empirical, and clinical implications stemming from the findings were suggested and fully discussed in the context of Korean society.

  • The cause of essential hypertension is yet unknown, but in general is caused by interaction of hereditary factors, diet, obesity, lack of exercise and stress. The aging process influences various physiological mechanism related to regulation of blood pressure. So elderly hypertensives have a tendancy to consider the disease as a result of the physiological aging process. This attitude causes many complications, worsening of the disease and even early death because of inappropriate care. In order to improve self-management of elderly hypertensives in this study the researcher examined the effect of blood pressure regulation by an education program that improves self-care behavior, through increasing self-efficacy. The education program consisted of group education on hypertension and self-care strategies, and encouraging and reinforcing self-efficacy resources such as verbal persuation, performance accomplishment and vicarious experiences. A quasi-experimental pre-and post-test design was used. Thirty-two elderly hypertensives participated in the study. Eighteen in the education group and fourteen in the control group. The education program consisted of eight sessions twice a week for four weeks. There was no intervention for the control group. Data were analysed using SPSS for Windows(Version 8.0). The results were as follows. 1. There was a significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressure between the experimental group and control group over three different times, and interaction by groups and over time. 2. There was no significant difference in the level of self-care behavior between the experimental group and control group over three different times, and interaction by groups and over time. 3. There was significant difference in selfefficacy of experimental and control group, depending on the measuring period, but there was no difference between these groups on interaction by groups and over time. 4. There was positive correlation between self efficacy and self care behavior depending on the measuring period. There was negative correlation between diastolic blood pressure and self-care behavior on the posttest of the program, and between systolic blood pressure and self-care behavior on the follow-up test of the program. Findings indicate that this study will contribute to develop nursing strategies for the regulation of blood pressure for the elderly, which is easy for the elderly to learn as a nonpharmacologic approach.
