  • Barcelona Basic Model (BBM) can describe not only swelling owing to decrease in effective stress, but also wetting-induced swelling due to decrease in suction. And the BBM can also consider increase in cohesion and apparent preconsolidation stress with suction, and decrease in the apparent preconsolidation stress with temperature. Therefore, the BBM is widely used all over the world to predict and to analyze coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical behavior of bentonite which is considered as buffer materials at the engineered barrier system in the high-level radioactive waste disposal system. However, the BBM is not well known in Korea, so this paper introduce the BBM to Korean rock engineers and geotechnical engineers. In this study, Modified Cam Clay (MCC) model is introduced before all, because the BBM was first developed as an extension of the MCC model to unsaturated soil conditions. Then, the thermo-elasto-plastic version of the BBM is described in detail.

  • The plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is induced by changes of the microstructure when the loading is beyond the critical state of stress. Constitutive models for the crystal plasticity have the common objective which relates microscopic single crystals in the crystallographic texture to the macroscopic continuum point. In this paper, a new consistent tangent stiffness for the anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic analysis of polycrystalline deformation is developed, which can be used in the finite element analysis for the slip-dominated large deformation of polycrystalline materials. In order to calculate the consistent tangent stiffness, the state function is defined based on the consistency condition between the elastic and plastic stress. The rate of shearing increment($\Delta{\gamma}^{\alpha}$) is calculated with satisfying the consistency condition. The consistency condition becomes zero when the trial resolved shear stress($\tau^{{\alpha}^*}$) becomes resolved shear stress($\tau^{\alpha}$) at every step. Iterative method is utilized to calculate the rate of shearing increment based on the implicit backward Euler method. The consistent tangent stiffness can be formulated by differentiating the rate of shearing increment with total strain increment after the instant rate of shearing increment converges. The proposed tangent stiffness is applied to the ABAQUS/Standard by implementing in the ABAQUS/UMAT.

  • A single layer latticed dome is one of the most efficient structures because of its low specivic gravity. For easily analyzing of a single layer latticed dome, joint system is assumed to be pin or rigid joint. However, its joint uses ball whose system has intermediate properties of pin and rigid joint. Therefore this study has a grasp of bending rigidity, stress and mechanical properties through experimental and analyzing method of the bolt inserted ball joint. To analyze the stress of bolt and sleeve, this study uses through 3D elastic contact and cubic element, and then the ball and the bolt are perfectly connected for easily analyzing Compared experimental results to F.E.M, each specimen has an error of less than 12 percent. In the results of stress distribution through F.E.M, stress occurs from bottom of bolt to top of sleeve, and most of tension appears on the bolt, also compression occurs from upper parts of the bolt to the sleeve. The assumption of bending stiffness in ball joint is well known that bolt resists only tension and upper sleeve resiss compression. The results of experiment and analysis have $7{\sim}56%$ error, assuring that upper part of bolt occurs of partial compression. In the result of modified assumption have $4{\sim}20%$ error.

  • In this work, an elastic-plastic stress analysis has been conducted for silicon carbide fiber reinforced magnesium metal matrix composite beam. The composite beam has a rectangular cross section. The beam is cantilevered and is loaded by a single force at its free end. In solution, the composite beam is assumed perfectly plastic to simplify the investigation. An analytical solution is presented for the elastic-plastic regions. In order to verify the analytic solution results were compared with the finite element method. An rectangular element with nine nodes has been choosen. Composite plate is meshed into 48 elements and 228 nodes with simply supported and in-plane loading condations. Predictions of the stress distributions of the beam using finite elements were overall in good agreement with analytic values. Stress distributions of the composite beam are calculated with respect to its fiber orientation. Orientation angles of the fiber are chosen as $0^{circ},\;30^{circ},\;45^{circ},\;60^{circ}\;and\;90^{circ}$. The plastic zone expands more at the upper side of the composite beam than at the lower side for $30^{circ},\;45^{circ}\;and\;60^{circ}$ orientation angles. Residual stress components of ${\sigma}_{x}\;and \;{\tau}_{xy}$ are also found in the section of the composite beam.

  • Equation of equilibrium is derived and solved for an infinite isotropic solid under applied hydrostatic stress which is uniform at large distance, and disturbed by a spherical precipitate which has isotropoc elastic constants dirrerent form those of the matrix. A linear strain hardening behavior of the matrix is assumed, and an elasto-plastic sloution is obtained. The difference of the total strain energy stored inthe infinite solid with and without a precipitate is computed, and compared with that for purely elastic case. Finally the effect of the ratio of the bulk modulus of the precipitate to that of the matrix and the effct of linear strain hardening rate on the plastic zone size and the energy difference are discussed.

  • A finite element procedure to estimate ultimate strength of space frames considering spread of plasticity is presented. The improved displacement field is introduced based on inclusion of second order terms of finite rotations. All the nonlinear terms due to bending and torsional moment as well as axial force are precisely considered. The concept of plastic hinge is introduced and the incremental load/displacement method is applied for the elasto-plastic analysis. The initial yield surface is defined based on the residual stress and the full plastification surface is considered under the combined action of axial force, bending and torsional moments. The elasto-plastic stiffness matrices are derived using the flow rule and the normality condition of the limit function. Finite element solutions for ultimate strength of space frames are compared with available solutions and experimental results.

  • The welding-induced initial imperfections such as residual stresses and initial strains in plated structures of ships and offshore structures can be effectively evaluated by the thermal elasto-plastic analysis method proposed in this paper. In the analysis of heat conduction of plate structures, both the analytical method and the numerical method are used. For the thermal elasto-plastic analysis of plates, the finite element analysis is performed, based on the initial strain method. In the plastic domain during incremental process, the 2nd order terms of stress increments and yield stress increments were considered, so that time increment could be controlled for more stable solution. To measure temperature distribution and angular distortion of plates during welding, bead-on-plate experiment are perform with various heat input and plate thickness. Measured data show good agreement with the calculated results.

  • In this study, the design method of the combined sheet pile was considered in the coastal landfill where sandy and clayey soils are mixed, and the behavior in excavation was analyzed. It was confirmed from the elasto-plastic analysis that the predicted behavior of the temporary facilities of earth retaining differs according to the type of the combined sheet pile method (Built up, Interlocking, Welding) and the analysis method (soldier pile method, continuous wall method). In the case of sheet pile member force, the results of the continuous wall analysis method predicted the most conservative results. When the stress ratio (calculation/allowance) of each member was analyzed based on the maximum member force of the combined sheet pile method, the maximum value was obtained for bending moment in the side pile and combined stress in the case of the strut. As a result of finite element analysis, the member force of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress analysis condition, while the compressive force of the strut was large in the consolidation analysis. When comparing the results of the elasto-plastic analysis and the finite element analysis, the shear force of the side pile and the axial force of the strut were greatly evaluated in the elasto-plastic analysis, and the bending moment of the side pile was the largest in the short-term effective stress condition of the finite element analysis. In addition, the displacement of the side pile was predicted to be greater in the finite element analysis than in the elasto-plastic analysis.

  • This paper is to study elasto-plastic behavior of shear deformed braced frames. Two types of frames are considered , X-type and K-type. The slenderness ratio has been used in the parametric study. The stress-strain curve is assumed tri-linear model, and considered the strain hardening range. The finite difference method is used to solve the load-displacement relationship of the braced frames. For the elastic slope and maximum load, experimental results are compared with theoretical results and its difference remains less than 10%. Therefore suggested method in this paper is reasonable.

  • Recent application researches on external pre-stressing method of composite structures have been conducted to explore its advantages. An external pre-stress could improve mechanical behavior and maintenance, and is economically efficient. In this paper, the Incremental Deformation Method (IDM) was proposed to analyze the elasto-plastic flexural behavior of externally pre-stressed composite bridge with consideration for the material's nonlinearity. This method was verified with experimental results.
