The sequential behavior of earth retaining structure is investigated by using soil springs in elasto -plastic soil. Mathematical model that can be used to construct the p-y curves for subgrade modulus is proposed by using piecewise linear function. The excavation sequence of retaining wall is analyzed by the beam -column method. Reliability on the developed computer program is verfied through the comparison between the prediction and the in -situ measuidments. It is concluded that the proposed method simulates well the construction sequence and thus represents a significant improvement in the prediction of deflections of anchored wall excavation. Based on the results the proposed method can be effectively used for the evaluation of the relative importance of the parameters employed in a sensitivity analysis.
Pile load tests using Osterberg cells (O-cell) were conducted on cast-in-place concrete piles founded in oil sand fill and in situ oil sand at an industrial plant site in Fort McMurray, Alberta, Canada. Interpreted pile test results show that very high pile shaft resistance (with the Bjerrum-Burland or Beta coefficient of 2.5-4.5) against oil sand could be mobilized at small relative displacements of 2-3% of shaft diameter. Finite element simulations based on linear elastic and elasto-plastic models for oil sand materials were used to analyze the pile load test measurements. Two constitutive models yield comparable top-down load versus pile head displacement curves, but very different behaviour in mobilization of pile shaft and end bearing resistances. The elasto-plastic model produces more consistent matching in both pile shaft and end bearing resistances whereas the linear elastic under- and over-predicts the shaft and end bearing resistances, respectively. The mobilization of high shaft resistance in oil sand under pile load is attributed to the very dense and interlocked structure of oil sand which results in high matrix stiffness, high friction angle, and high shear dilation.

A drive shaft is used to transmit torque and rotation through the connection of components of a drive train. Recently, a monobloc drive shaft without welding regions is developed to improve the safety of the drive shaft. The drive shaft bears the shear stress induced by torque. The objective of this paper is to investigate into the structural safety of a monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Elasto-plastic finite element (FE) analysis is performed to estimate the deformation behavior of the drive shaft and stress-strain distribution in the drive shaft. Several techniques are used to create finite element (FE) model of the monobloc tubular drive shaft subjected to torque. Through the comparison of the results of FE analyses with those of experiments from the viewpoint of rotational angle, appropriate correction coefficients for different load conditions are estimated. The safety of the tubular drive shaft is examined using the results of FE analyses for different load conditions. Finally, it is noted that the designed tubular drive shaft has a sufficient structural safety.
Prediction and control of the thermal distortion is particularly important for the design and manufacture of welded thin plate panel. In this study, experiments and computations are performed to analyze effect of a hole configuration and a specimen size on distortion. In addition, this study aims to develop a thermal elasto-plastic simulation using finite element method to predict distortion, with particular emphasis on buckling deformation generated in plates welded around hole. From the experiments, the severe distortion appeared in the weldments by the laser welding process, in which the specimen size plays an important role on the distortion but the hole configuration showed little effect. And the results of numerical analysis were corresponded well with the experiment ones. Thus, a thermal elasto-plastic analysis model for predicting the weld distortion of thin plate panel was successfully developed through this study.

In this study, experiments of welding deformation considering dog-pieces setting were performed to assess the effect of dog-pieces on welding deformations quantitatively and an analysis method of welding deformations considering dog-pieces was proposed. Experimental results show the relationship between welding deformations and dog-pieces setting quantitatively. The maximum reduction of welding deformation was measured as 74%. The proposed numerical analysis method to predict welding deformations is one of thermal elasto-plastic analyses using a circular heat flux and finite elements model and has been verified through experiments of welding deformation. The proposed analysis method is expected to be used in a variety of fields as an analysis tool to assess or establish guidelines for a proper use of dog-pieces.

The plastic deformation of polycrystalline materials is induced by changes of the microstructure when the loading is beyond the critical state of stress. Constitutive models for the crystal plasticity have the common objective which relates microscopic single crystals in the crystallographic texture to the macroscopic continuum point. In this paper, a new consistent tangent stiffness for the anisotropic elasto-viscoplastic analysis of polycrystalline deformation is developed, which can be used in the finite element analysis for the slip-dominated large deformation of polycrystalline materials. In order to calculate the consistent tangent stiffness, the state function is defined based on the consistency condition between the elastic and plastic stress. The rate of shearing increment($\Delta{\gamma}^{\alpha}$) is calculated with satisfying the consistency condition. The consistency condition becomes zero when the trial resolved shear stress($\tau^{{\alpha}^*}$) becomes resolved shear stress($\tau^{\alpha}$) at every step. Iterative method is utilized to calculate the rate of shearing increment based on the implicit backward Euler method. The consistent tangent stiffness can be formulated by differentiating the rate of shearing increment with total strain increment after the instant rate of shearing increment converges. The proposed tangent stiffness is applied to the ABAQUS/Standard by implementing in the ABAQUS/UMAT.

In general, a number of lifting lugs have been used in shipbuilding industry and the D-type lugs are mainly used. The aim of this paper is to increase the cycle of the use and to reduce the size of lifting lugs to introduce lightweight shackle. In this study, nonlinear elasto-plastic analysis has been performed to confirm the ultimate strength of lifting lugs. In order to evaluate the proper design-load distribution around lug eye, the contact force between lifting lug and shackle pin has been realized by gab element model. Gap element modeling and nonlinear analysis are carried out using the finite element program MSC/PATRAN & ABQUS. Additionally the ultimate strength tests were performed to verify the structural adequacy of newly designed lifting lug and to insure safety of it. The D-10, 15, 20 & 40 ton models which are mainly used in the block erection are selected in the strength test. According to the results of the analysis and strength test, the ultimate strength of the newly designed lifting lugs has been estimated to exceed 3 times of design working load.

Foam structure is usually hard to model due to the complexity of the geometry of cells. So, many simplified models to represent complicated foam structures have been proposed, but most of them are not actually describe the random feature of the cell structure well. So, in this study, two dimensional isotropic and anisotropic closed cell structures of the foam were modeled using the concept of Voronoi cells. The elasto-plastic deformation behavior under compressive loads was investigated by finitie element analysis, and the results were compared with ideal honeycomb structure. In addition, the effect of anisotropy of Voronoi cell structures of the foam on Young's modulus and yield stress under compressive loads was studied.
Suction affects the unsaturated soil as the negative pore pressure, and leads to increases of the yield stress and the plastic shear stiffness of the soil skeleton due to the growth in interparticle stress. Hence, in this study, in order to account for these effects of suction under the dynamic loading condition such as the earthquake, the element simulation of the cyclic triaxial test using induced stress-strain relation based on cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model extended for unsaturated soil considering the $1^{st}$ and the $2^{nd}$ yield functions was conducted. Through the stress path, stress-strain relation and relation between volumetric strain and axial strain, it was seen in all the cases that the simulation results demonstrated a good agreement with the experimental results. It is expected that the results of this study possibly contribute to the accuracy improvement on the prediction of unsaturated soil behavior under the dynamic loading condition.

In the unsaturated soil, suction, the negative pore water pressure leads to increases of the yield stress and the plastic shear stiffness of the soil skeleton due to the growth in interparticle stress. Therefore, in this study, the stress-strain relationship based on cyclic elasto-plastic constitutive model extended for unsaturated soil considering the 1st and the 2nd yield functions was induced in order to account for these effects of suction under the dynamic loading condition such as the earthquake. Through the program code considering this relationship and the routine of the cyclic loading with the reversion of loading direction, the numerical simulation of the cyclic triaxial test under the unsaturated condition would be possible. It is expected that the results of this study possibly contribute to the accuracy improvement on the prediction of unsaturated soil behavior under the dynamic loading condition.
